Kimball Library News 11/8/11

It might seem early to start mentioning ‘holiday’ events, but we know that if you don’t book us now we may not see you in December and we have classes and events coming up that you won’t want to miss! So pencil us in now and in future articles there will be more information regarding each event.

Monday, November 21, from 6-8pm you can make and take your cornucopia arrangement home for a lovely Thanksgiving table or harvest themed event. Registration is required. Class is limited to 20 people. Materials fee of $25 must be paid in advance at the main desk.

Thursday, December 1, from 6-8pm you can make and take a beautiful boxwood tree with Felicia Motherway home with you. Reservations are required. Class is limited to 20 people. Materials fee of $30.00 must be paid in advance. Please sign up at the circulation desk.

Saturday, December 3, 10, and 17, for the children will be our ever popular ‘Holiday Drop N’ Shop’ from 10:30am-12:30pm on the first two dates. On the 17th we’ll end at 1pm. This event is for children ages 6 and up who can be left in our care by signing our release forms. We’ll occupy them with a movie and fun in our large meeting room while you shop or wrap gifts. The movie will be the first event followed by a simple craft class. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building.

Tuesday, December 20th, from 6:30-8pm for grades 5-12 will be a Tween/Teen ‘Holiday No-Bake/Bake-Off!’ We had a stiff competition this summer and one of the winners just this evening has claimed she will win again. Start sharpening your knives and spoons for holiday recipes.

We presume that you’d like a few more details regarding the crafts for adults. We’re pretty sure that you’d be interested in what kinds of films are being shown on Saturdays as well as what type of craft is being offered each week. We know you will want the rules for the holiday cooking competition. Stay tuned for future articles for more information. Yes, that was deliberate. We will also soon have some brochures that you can pick up regarding the Saturday activities. Mark your calendar now.

We will also continue to have adult events such as writing, Wii, book discussions and knitting. Check out our weekly story times, events and classes. Too busy to drop by and know what is going on? You can get news directly sent to your inbox twice a month. Please ask us if you are interested. This is a fabulous way to stay abreast of the newest events.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Friday, November 11th, (Veterans Day) and Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.

Kimball Library News 11/1/11

Got your game on? Celebrate the 4th National Gaming Day with us on Saturday, November 12th, from 11am-2pm. Communities across the U.S. (and internationally!) are coming together in the spirit of play for the American Library Association’s 4th Annual National Gaming Day @ your library, sponsored by FamilyandPartyGames.com. This year’s event expects to draw more than 20,000 people at more than 1,200 libraries. All ages enjoy games. Stop in and find a Wii game or a board game for your level.

Got your pen in hand? The Kimball Library Writing Group meets the second Monday of every month.

This is a great opportunity to share your writing with others to discuss and critique. Each writing session will be facilitated. This is a judgment free zone for writers of all levels and a great time for you to try out your writing with others. Drop in on Monday, November 14th, and get your pen rolling.
Got words? The teens do! Teens in grades 6-12 should check it out ‘Words with Teens’ on Tuesday, November 15th, from 6:30-7:30pm.

Got pooch fever? Meet Lady Hawke, the reader dog! Register now to come and read with Hawke on Wednesday, November 16th, from 4-5pm. This wonderful 9 year old Labrador retriever is very patient and loves being read to by children. Hawke is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International and loves her visits with new and experienced readers. When she's not reading, Hawke lives in Plaistow with her sister and brother Labs and human family.

‘The dog encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won’t laugh at them if they make a mistake or stumble over a word, but rather sit next to them and enjoy the story being read to them. The children learn to associate reading with being with the dog, and begin to view reading in a positive way. Over time, the child’s reading ability and confidence can improve because they are practicing their skills, which will make them enjoy reading even more.' (from Therapy Dogs International)

Got holiday fever? We have the program for you on Monday, November 21, from 6-8pm. Register and learn to make a cornucopia arrangement. Enjoy a creative night out by learning how to arrange fresh flowers in a Fall Cornucopia (horn of plenty basket) perfect for Thanksgiving. Class is limited to 20 people and the materials fee of $25 must be paid in advance. Please sign up at the circulation desk.

Got moves? We don’t, but Nelson Barrios does! Learn the basics at ‘Karate for Kids’! Nelson Barrios will be here to introduce karate to two age levels of children. There will be opportunities for ages 5-7 from 4:00-4:45pm and for ages 7-10 from 4:45-5:30pm. In between, there will be a Numchuck demonstration for all to see the skills that are developed using Karate. Wear comfortable clothing and come to enjoy the sport. Register for this event, please. You may call us or do this online.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Friday, November 11th, (Veterans Day) and Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.

Kimball Library News 10/25/11

We are learning some new vocabulary with ‘Words with Teens’ on Tuesday nights once a month. Thus far we have played ‘Balderdash’, ‘Wordsters’, and ‘Scattegories’. It would be hard to choose a favorite! If you are in grades 6-12 you are invited to register and join us. We are a cool group that’s not too cutthroat and we’d love some more players. Our next gathering is Tuesday, November 15th, at 6:30pm. Register yourself and friends are welcome if you register them. We have word games here, but if you have a favorite you’re welcome to bring yours and teach us to play.

Saturdays once a month at the library are a great time for kids to gather and enjoy a free movie. Make a note in your electronic calendar or in the good old-fashioned date book to remind yourself about the Saturday Cinema coming up on November 19th at 10:30am. This is a fun film for all ages. Vroom! Vroom! Pack up the kids and you may leave the building if they are at least age 6 with a permission slip signed or stick around and enjoy the show for ages 5 and under. We appreciate your registrations in advance. Please bring movie snacks, candy, or bottled drinks along with pillows if the kids prefer to sack out on the floor. Make our Saturday shows part of your family traditions.

It’s time to start thinking about adding a delightful little extra to your Thanksgiving table or bringing along a beautiful hostess gift for the upcoming holiday. Here at the library you can enjoy a relaxing, yet productive, night out by learning how to arrange fresh flowers in a Fall Cornucopia (horn of plenty basket) perfect for Thanksgiving or a harvest themed home or event. The cornucopia is filled with colorful mums, golden aster, natural berries, fall grasses and foliage. This fresh flower design is long-lasting and perfect for a centerpiece or gift.

Felicia Motherway, back by popular demand, will be the presenter for this program taking place on Monday, November 21, from 6-8pm right in time for Thanksgiving. Are you a bit insecure about your craft skills? Not to worry, she doesn’t let anyone leave without a satisfactory looking basket in hand. Registration is required for this popular event and space is limited to 20 people. The reasonable materials fee of $25 must be paid in advance. Please sign up at the circulation desk. Your registration is confirmed with cash or a check.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Friday, November 11th, (Veterans Day) and Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.
