Kimball Library News 8/19/13

It’s time to rhyme!  Got little ones?  Welcome to Mother Goose on the Loose, a fun-filled thirty minute interactive session that uses rhymes, songs, puppets, musical instruments and more to stimulate the learning process of babies and toddlers.  Our fall session starts on Monday, September 12th, at 10:30am.  We meet every week with an occasional Monday off here or there.  Most of the caregivers feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages and so it’s also a good place to meet others with little ones.  Please register online or give us a call and talk to Miss Kathy if you want to know more about this class.

It’s time to discuss a good book!  Join us for the August morning book group when we discuss ‘Dancing after Hours’ by Haverhill, MA author, Andre Dubus.  ‘He restores faith in the survival of the short story’ (Los Angeles Times), and with this collection, demonstrates more powerfully than ever before both his mastery of the form and his understanding of our imperfect lives.  Whether you read one story or all fourteen, come sit with us and enjoy the book even more!  This group meets monthly, the 4th Wednesday at 10:15am. We welcome you!

It’s time to plan ahead!  Got a few extra hours on your hands to watch movies, read, or listen to tunes?  We will be closed Labor Day weekend (Saturday, August 31st through Monday, September 2nd.)  Two day loan items checked out on Thursday will not be due back until Tuesday, September 3rd.  Take advantage of the extension on two-day loans and have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

It’s time to get healthy!  Mark the date to get started on a healthier lifestyle with ‘Nutrition and Weight Loss with Dr. Swiesz’ that will take place on Tuesday, September 17th, from 6:30-8pm.  Come learn some helpful information regarding health and fitness.  This program is free and open to the public.

It’s time for fall cleaning.  Got books?  We’ll take them off your hands in preparation for the ‘Fall Book and Bake Sale’ that is around the corner on Saturday, September 28th, from 8am-3pm.  Please drop off your books, DVDs, and audiobooks Monday-Friday 10-8 and Saturday 10-3 except during a holiday closing.  Start your downsizing!

A note of appreciation to our summer reading benevolent benefactors:

Thank you for your contributions! On behalf of the Kimball Library and the youth of our community we know how important your help has been to our 2013 ‘Dig into Reading’ (kids up to grade 5), and ‘Beneath the Surface’ (grade 6 and up) summer reading programs.

We registered over 300 collective youth for our programs, and they read thousands of minutes and well over 1200 books in six weeks. The participation at our weekly programs was so great that the demand caused us to wait-list many children. That exciting level of participation from kindergarten to teens shows us how much the youth appreciate and enjoy the variety of programs and services the library has been able to provide.

The library boomed with children’s excitement as they enjoyed the summer reading finale with ice cream, entertainment and prizes, all because of your generous gifts. It is only through the benevolence of businesses such as yours that we are able to serve the town with such high quality reading incentive programs.

We appreciated the variety of contributions.  It does take a community to raise a tremendous summer reading program.  The children, tweens, and teens were grateful and excited to receive great prizes.

Sincerely yours—the Kimball Library Youth Services Department.

We are in the gathering stages for the fall book sale that will take place on September 28th.  We accept book donations year round, but twice a year we urge you to clear out what you no longer want and bring them in to us.  The Town-wide Yard Sale is coming up and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase.  These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now.  We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.  When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to “Got Books” or some other worthy organization. Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.  Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.  Please, do NOT leave them on our front bench or in the book drops.

Fall story times are now on the calendar and are available for registration.  All classes begin at the start of September.  We have 3 different opportunities for 3 different age groups and we have 5 available time slots.  If none of the time slots fit your schedule, please let us know.  If we have a minimum of 5 interested families we are willing to open up another class if it is agreeable with our schedules.  Take a look below at what is available.  Register early—we do have a space restriction for each class.

Fall for ‘Mother Goose on the Loose’ every Monday at 10:30am for infants through age 2.  Tiny tots with their caregivers are invited to Miss Kathy for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs.  It’s not only good for the child, but it’s good for the adults to meet others with young children.  It’s common to remain after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages.  Playgroups and friendships are formed.  Register now—in person, on the phone, or online.

Fall for ‘Bitty Books’ every Tuesday at 10:15am for children ages 2-3.  Toddlers with their caregivers are invited to join Mrs. Birr for itty bitty stories, rhymes, finger plays or songs and a simple craft.  Socialization and education are all part of this class for little ones.  Registration is now available.

Fall for ‘Kiddie Lit’ either on Tuesdays at 11:30am, Thursdays at 10:15am, or Fridays at 10:15am.  Children are invited to join either Mrs. Birr (Tuesday/Thursday) or Miss Celeste (Fridays) for rhymes, reading, and activities to stimulate your child's interest in and love of reading.  Caretakers may stay and listen or relax elsewhere in the library.  Registration is currently available for all sections—space does fill up quickly.

The summer reading programs (‘Dig Into Reading’ and ‘Beneath The Surface’) officially end as of August 8.  If you have been on vacation the last week in July or first week in August, you may come in and redeem your minutes for prizes.  All summer reading prizes, dig into reading shovels, etc will be put away by August 19th.  Please redeem your minutes and collect your loot.  Teens need to collect their prizes before the end of August.

Start tapping your toes for more music in the courtyard!  The Timberlane Community Jazz Band will grace us with their presence on Thursday, August 15th, starting at 6:30pm.  All ages are reminded to stop by for some lovely summer tunes right in our patio area.  We are fortunate to have the fine musicians sharing their talent with us.  Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music!  *Call ahead or check our website in case of inclement weather.

Attention to all enrolled in summer ‘Bitty Books’ and summer ‘Kiddie Lit’ classes.  The last week of summer sessions is the week of August 4.  ‘Bitty Books’ last class is August 6, and the last ‘Kiddie Lit’ class is August 9.  Stay tuned for our fall sessions that start the week of September 1st.

Mother Goose summer classes are ongoing until August 19.  Our new fall session starts Monday, September 9th, at 10:15am.  You may register for this class now.  We love having new babies and toddlers in our class.

Timberlane Regional High School teens, we are having a ‘Dear Teen Me’ TRHS All School Read discussion on Wednesday, August 21, at 6:30pm.  Come hang out and discuss ‘Dear Teen Me’ before school starts.  You know you have to read it, and you know you have an assignment due.  It will be a lot more fun to talk about it with other teens and get some ideas for your paper.  If you register and attend the discussion, we’ll get you a book to borrow.  Besides, we eat candy at these book discussions!  There is also an available ebook at the NH Downloadable Books consortium that can be borrowed for free and put on your e-reader or tablet.  Check it out!

Save this date—August 22nd!  Go to Uno's (Haverhill/Plaistow line) anytime on August 22nd from 11:30am to closing with the DOUGH RAI$ER coupon in hand and the Friends of the Kimball Library will get up to 20% of your total bill.  This is also good on take-out orders.  All you have to do is pick up a coupon at the Kimball Library or print one off our website and give it to the hostess when placing your order.  This is GREAT way to support all those events you love to attend at the library.  Please take care to have your coupon with you and you mention it to your server—they cannot give credit without it.  Bring your friends out to lunch or dinner with you and get even more bang for the library buck!  :)
