Kimball Library News 8/17/15

We had 122 registered children entering grades K-5 participate in our summer reading participation challenge, and we gave out too many prizes too count!  We are thankful to all the youth (preschool-teens) that participated in any of our events.  We can only have a happy summer when you are here.  J
We are sorry to say that even though over 100 teens registered for summer reading, they did not achieve the necessary 500 receipts in the jar to win the Teen Lock-In.  Better luck next year—shhhhhhhhh, the secret to winning is to encourage your friends to play the game, too!  We did, however, give out over 60 gift cards or passes via the teen raffle and lots of happy teens were to be found here frequenting our events or checking out materials.

DONATIONS: The Town-wide Yard Sale is coming up in September and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase.  These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now.

We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a charitable organization.  Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND:  Kimball Library will be closed for Labor Day Weekend (September 5-7)
Two day loan DVDs checked out on Thursday, 9/3 and Friday, 9/4 will be due on Tuesday, 9/8.  Stock up accordingly, and have a safe and pleasant holiday weekend.

THANK YOU: Here’s shout-out to Loral Press who has supported summer reading by writing us a generous check for the past 3 years!  This year they paid entirely for the chocolate event.  Everyone gives you big chocolate thanks!

MOVIE NIGHT IN THE COURTYARD: The Atkinson Recreation and the Kimball Library are hosting a movie night in the library courtyard on Friday, August 14th.  The feature film is The Princess Bride. Running Time 1 hr, 39 min.  Popcorn & drinks will be provided starting at 7:30 PM.  Movie will start at 8:00 PM or as soon as it is dark enough.  Bring a blanket, lawn chair, or sit on the courtyard wall.

This beloved classic fairytale begins with a grandfather reading his favorite book 'The Princess Bride” to his hard-to-impress grandson. This book, he promises, has everything – 'Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love. Miracles.” – and all that he promised comes to life before the boy’s enchanted eyes as his grandfather reads him the adventures of Buttercup, the most beautiful woman in the world, and Westley, the man she loves.

*The Courtyard has been sprayed for mosquitoes.  We will spray again right before the show.*
The movie will be shown inside the library if there is a chance of rain or if it is too windy.

MORNING BOOK DISCUSSION:  We welcome new faces even if you didn't read the book! Come to listen, or join in the conversation!  Coffee and goodies are available and it's a great way to meet new friends. The book selection for August 26th at 10:15am is 'The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.'  This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.  Ask for your copy today!

EVENING BOOK DISCUSSION PM: We meet on the 3rd Tuesday evening of each month to discuss the chosen title.  Newcomers are always welcome to be part of the discussion or to drop in and just listen.   On August 18th at 6:00pm we’ll be discussing ‘Euphoria’ by Lily King.  "A small gem, disturbing and haunting."  Ask for a copy of the book of the month at the front desk.
