Kimball Library News 1/19/15

FEBRUARY WIGGLE WORDS: For children ages 3-6, you can make letters with your bodies, learn some alphabet sign language, run and jump to rhyming words, and dance, dance, DANCE!

Join Michelle Collins and other wigglers to combine letters and movement to jump start into literacy.  The combination of music and movement is a great way to cement sounds and letters and have fun at the same time.  This is a judgment-free beginning sounds class for a wide developmental range of children.

Wiggle Words in February will be held on Thursday, February 5 at 1pm or Thursday, February 19th at 10:30am.  Please register for your preferred time (NOT both) so we can accommodate more children.

TWEENS GO GRAPHIC: Novels, that is. ;)  The book discussion for Wednesday, February 4, at 6:30 for grades 6-8 is a graphic novel entitled ‘Drama’ by Raina Telgemeier.  Following the success of ‘Smile’, Telgemeier brings us another graphic novel featuring a diverse set of characters that humorously explores friendship, crushes, and all-around drama. This would be a great time for reluctant readers to join us as this book is not intimidating at all.  Refreshments, discussion, and fun will be served. It’s not school!  No worries if you didn’t finish the book.  You will still be able to contribute to the discussion.  All interested middle school students are welcome regardless of the town you live in. Just ask for a copy of the book at the front desk.

ONE MINUTE REMINDERS: We have some special events coming up that we don’t want you to miss!  Save the date for…’KnitWits’ (knit and chat) every Tuesday at 10:30am, ’Chocolate, the Perfect Drug’ presentation and sampling on Tuesday, February 11th, at 6:30pm, ‘Dabblers’ (crafters and painters) every Thursday at 10:30am, 'Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe' teen book discussion on Wednesday, February 12th, at 6:30pm, and ‘Anime Club’ for grades 6-12 on Thursday, February 12th, at 6pm featuring Japanese snacks, anime movies, and making friends.  Need more info?  Our calendar on the website has a plethora of information on these events and many others you may have missed reading about.

Just in time for Valentine's Day: Taste and see if indeed “Chocolate, the Perfect Drug” is fact or fiction!  Learn from Mike Cross which chemicals elicit biochemical reactions in the human brain, making chocolate, quite possibly, the perfect drug. During the presentation, you will also learn how to taste chocolate for quality and how to eat it, too!  Join us on Tuesday, February 10th, for this delicious education evening from 6:30-8:00pm.

About the presenter - Mike Cross is an instructor of chemistry at Northern Essex Community College (and Atkinson resident).  Before coming to Northern Essex, Mike was an instructor of chemistry and department chair at the College of Eastern Utah. Mike holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Utah where he specialized in oxidative lesions in DNA and RNA.

Flipster, a New Way to Access Digital Magazines: Patrons of Kimball Library can now access digital magazines using Flipster™ from EBSCO Information Services. Flipster is a next-generation digital magazine service that allows people to browse the latest issues of high quality digital versions of popular magazines, courtesy of the library.

We have both Flipster and hard-copy versions of magazines like People, Sports Illustrated, and Bloomsburg so patrons have the option of accessing the content at the library or remotely. Magazines can be downloaded to iPads or iPad Minis, Android tablets, and the Kindle Fire via a native app for offline reading anytime anywhere. Magazines can be viewed on the browser of your computer, mobile device, or tablet without the app. The main difference is you need an internet connection and a recent browser if you are not using the app.

Flipster offers an easy, browseable reading experience. Users can browse magazines by category as well as perform searches for specific periodicals. An online newsstand provides a carousel of the most recent issues, as well as a carousel of all issues allowing for quick access to magazines. The table of contents contains links to quickly go to articles of interest and hotlinks within magazines are hyperlinked, opening in separate tabs when clicked. In addition, there is an option to zoom in and out for better readability.

Use the available link under “LIBRARY LINKS” on our website to take a test drive or flip! Currently the sky is the limit, our selection after the initial trial period will be more select.  Do take note that Newsweek is available and not ever available in print! To learn more about Flipster, visit http://flipster.ebsco.com.

HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed on Monday, February 16th, observing Presidents’ Day.  Please stock up accordingly.

The walls of the meeting room as well as other parts of the main library are adorned with McDermott’s work.  She specializes in seascapes, landscapes, and nature abstracts using both film and digital cameras. Her favorite places to photographic in the Boothbay area are Ocean Point and Oven’s Mouth.
