APRIL TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Register grades 9-12 for the Wednesday, April 8 discussion at 6:30pm of ‘Out of the Easy’ by Ruta Sepetys.  It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer.

With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny. Friends are welcome.  Books are available at the front desk.

MARY TODD LINCOLN, WIFE AND WIDOW: Join us on Tuesday, April 14th, from 6:30-8:00pm to delve into the life of Mary Toddy Lincoln.  Living historian, Sally Mummey, portrays Mary Todd Lincoln as she muses on her life from her dreams as a girl to her years as First Lady during the Civil War.   Mrs. Lincoln shares stories of her life with President Lincoln and the events of that evening in Ford's Theatre when the assassin's bullet not only changed the course of the nation, but destroyed her life as well.  From the opulence of the White House to the dregs of obscurity, Mrs. Lincoln lived out her life struggling with affliction and tragedy.  With wit and heartbreak, seasoned with abiding love for her husband and her children, Mrs. Lincoln reveals the passionate humanity of a misunderstood woman. Reduced to obscurity, Mrs. Lincoln lived out the remainder of her life a troubled widow – disillusioned, isolated, friendless, and overshadowed by her husband’s legacy.

April 15, 2015 marks the 150 Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Assassination.  This insightful program is made possible by a grant from the NH Humanities Council.  This is also sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Light refreshments will be served.

NEW HAMPSHIRE’S GRANGE MOVEMENT: Its Rise, Triumphs and Decline:  Much of rural New Hampshire in the late 19th century was locked in a downward spiral of population decline, abandonment of farms, reversion of cleared land to forest and widespread feelings of melancholy and loss. The development of the Grange movement in the 1880s and 1890s was aided greatly by hunger for social interaction, entertainment and mutual support. As membership surged it became a major force in policymaking in Concord, and its agenda aligned closely with the progressive politics that swept the state in early 20th century. Many Grange initiatives became law, placing the state at the leading edge in several areas of reform. Steve Taylor analyzes the rapid social and economic changes that would eventually force the steep decline of the once-powerful movement.

Steve Taylor is an independent scholar, farmer, journalist and longtime public official.  With his sons, Taylor operates a dairy, maple syrup and cheese making enterprise in Meriden Village.  He has been a newspaper reporter and editor, and served for 25 years as NH’s commissioner of agriculture.  Taylor was the founding executive director of the NH Humanities Council and is a lifelong student of the state’s rural culture.

This free and informative program is sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society and will be held on Thursday, April 9th, from 6:30-8:00pm at the Kimball Library.  Refreshments will be served.

Chirp’s mom develops symptoms of a serious disease, and everything changes.

Chirp and Joey (the mysterious boy who lives across the street) will steal your heart, and our discussions will steal your child’s!  We’ll be enjoying candy and one another as we chat about this book.  Friends are welcome.  Books are available at the front desk.

BEDTIME MATH CRAZY 8’s CLUB:  Crazy 8s is an over-the-top after-school club that’s designed to get kids fired up about math. Every week kids get to build stuff, run and jump, make music, make a mess...and make friendships at the same time. They will get to do mischief making activities like Glow-in-the-Dark Geometry, Bouncy Dice and Toilet Paper Olympics, and they’ll get to take home some cool gadgets, too.  It’s time for math to become the cool thing to do after school!

This particular session is for children in grades K-2, and it is running at Kimball Library on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30pm for consecutive sessions beginning on April 2nd through May 28th with the exception of April 30th (Timberlane vacation week).   Registration is required, and this is an 8 week commitment with one vacation week built in.  Please know that when you sign up you are committing to all 8 weeks.  This is a math curriculum that can be explored online at www.bedtimemath.org.

ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCELLO’S LIBRARY: Join us every THIRD Thursday of each month from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss a nominated Great Stone Face book.  The aforementioned will be discussed on Thursday, March 19th, from 6:30-7:30pm.  Crazy book chatter and snacks will be provided.  This book group is for children in grades 3-5 only.  Please register in advance!

SNAP CIRCUITS LAB:  With its easy-to-follow instructions, Snap Circuits gives your child a hands-on education in how electrical circuits work to run the everyday devices that they're familiar with. They'll also gain valuable lessons in building and in following instructions. With these projects, children will experiment with things like electric switches, integrated circuits, digital circuits, fuses, and the transformation of circuit sounds into other sounds.

Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, kids can build on their skills as they progress through the manual. The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more.

The lab, on Wednesday, March 25th, from 6:30-7:45pm, will give opportunity to explore and build in step by step fashion with the help of the facilitator. We have ten kits so we are allowing only ten registrations in the range of grades 3-6. Please do not register if you cannot commit to coming and hold a spot from someone else. Thanks.
