Kimball Library News 11/23/15

1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN: The State of New Hampshire has initiated a “1000 Books before Kindergarten’ incentive and Kimball Library is along for the ride.  The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program encourages parents and caregivers to provide positive, nurturing early experiences by reading aloud to their children regularly. We have designed posters, bookmarks, reading records, and incentives that help parents commit to reading 1000 books before kindergarten to their infant children through age 5.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood. The brain develops more rapidly during the first three years of a child’s life than at any other time during the lifespan. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most important, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

Resident library card holders may register and then submit a photo of their child at the onset.  We have special bags for completing the first 100 books.  After that we will cheer you on each time you read 100 more and come in for another reading log.  You can sign up as early (in person) as today or anytime as long as your child is between 0 and 5 and hasn’t completed kindergarten.

BOXWOOD TREE: We are kicking off the holiday season with the ever-popular boxwood tree craft.  We will once again be having Felicia Motherway at the library teaching this beautiful art. We’re having it on two separate evenings so more of you can enjoy this wonderful activity.  On Tuesday, December 1st from 6-8pm OR Wednesday, December 2nd from 6-8pm we are offering seats to learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays.

The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy. It’s also a great gift idea. Even the lowly ‘craft-impaired’ will leave with a tree that looks like it was professionally done.  Felicia does not let anyone leave who is not happy with his/her tree.

Reservations are required as each class is limited to 20 people.  Materials fee of $35.00 must be paid in advance in order for your registration to be secure.  Please sign up at the circulation desk with your cash or check made out to Felicia Motherway.  Phone registrations will not be accepted.

AN HOUR OF CODE: The hour of code is a family event coming to Kimball Library via the Sylvan Center in Salem, NH as part of a movement to enrich and educate during National Computer Science Week.  You'll be virtually joining other students all over the world. Your school age child will learn some computer programming through fun and engaging activities.  Join Sylvan and Kimball Library for the movement by registering and coming to this 'BYOD Hour of Code' event on Tuesday, December 8, from 6:30-7:30pm.

There will be a total of ten devices available from the library and Sylvan, so if you have any device or gadget that you can use to connect to our public Wi-Fi, please bring it.  This will leave those for the less fortunate 'device-less' youth to use. (BYOD=BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE if possible)

This event is being held in partnership with 'Sylvan of Salem'. You can visit their website at Sylvan.Salem@sylvanlearning.com

DROP N’ SHOP on DEC 5: Start the holiday season with lots of fun for the young ones! YUM!  You know it's always a good time at the Drop 'n Shop!   Registration is required and residents have priority if the event is filled

TUMBLEBOOKS: TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach young children the joys of reading in a format they'll love.  They are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sounds, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book (and some classics) which you can read, or have read to you. The language drop-down menu allows you to view the site in French and Spanish, instead of English.

Did you know that we have this valuable resource right on our website for free?  Just go to www.kimballlibrary.com and look for the TumbleBook icon in the top right portion of the page.  Click on it and you will be ready to read and listen!  Most children are assigned reading on a nightly basis, and this is a new way to engage your child.  Also, teens and adults can brush up on their foreign language studies by using the Spanish and French options.  Happy Tumbling!

TIS THE SEASON: Back again by popular demand, Kimball Library once again will be hosting three Saturdays in a row of our entertaining and educational ‘Holiday Drop ‘n Shop’.  Mark your calendar now for the following dates and times so you can register your children for December 5, 12, and 19 from 10:30am-12:30pm.  We are definitely “Santa’s Elves” for your **kids ages 6 and up.  We’ll occupy them with fun activities while you shop or wrap gifts.  Each Saturday will host a different teacher and unique projects.  Please send them with simple snacks and spill-proof beverages.  You’ll fa la la la la all the way home!

**All 'Drop 'n Shop' participants must be at least 6 years of age to be left in the building without an adult.  Ages 6-9 must have an adult fill out a waiver on that morning to be left here in our care.  Children under 6 must be supervised by the attending caretaker.  Children ages 10 and up are allowed to stay without an adult or waiver according to library policy.  Thank you for your cooperation.  Register soon, please, for this very popular event so we can have the necessary supplies.

MAKE A THANKSGIVING GAME:  Preschool and elementary children of all ages (with help) can make a mock ‘birch bark ball and triangle’.  This is a unique design, based on a traditional toy used by the Penobscot Native American children. It was made from a stiff piece of birch bark in the shape of a triangle, with a hole in the center. One corner has a string, and a ball is attached to the other end of the string. Come and make one with us! Please register your child and a friend for this program.  Registered non-resident guests are welcome.

RESCHEDULED SKYWATCH WITH NH ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY:  The New Hampshire Astronomical Society will be offering their telescopes for an evening's observing of celestial wonders on Tuesday, November 17th, from 6:30-8:00pm.  There will be a brief indoor presentation explaining details concerning the sorts of celestial objects we will be looking at first-hand, through the telescopes.  The viewing area will be in the Kimball Library Courtyard. This event was originally to be held in October, but the sky was not optimal for viewing.  Pray/cross-fingers for a clear night!

NH DOWNLOADABLE BOOKS: Many of you realize we have electronic books and audiobooks that you can download right off our website after tapping into the ‘downloadable books’ icon and signing in with your library card.  You may think “I don’t have time to read books!  I’m far too busy.”  You may not know that there also is a wide array of electronic magazines that you can choose from that are far less time consuming and will save you the expense of a yearly subscription.  Check them out—literally!  They will show up on the front page after you sign in.  Happy reading!
