Kimball Library News 5/23/16

We continue to bring you the best in summer reading activities!  Keep reading and keep *registering!

‘GET IN THE GAME READ’ registration is open to Atkinson youth entering grade 6 to age 19 (as of Fall 2016).

Register as early as Monday, June 1, by coming into the Kimball Library to receive your $5 fine credit. Use it to pay down your library fines or receive future fine credit.  Registration is open until the end of July.

Each time you visit the library after you have registered and check something out or participate in an event you may put a participation ticket in a raffle jar.  Be sure that your name is on the front and your phone number is on the back.  You can scan your library card into your smartphone or iPod in the RedLaser or Keychain app so you always have it available to check items out.

Drop your ticket in a raffle jar near the main desk to be eligible for random prize drawings held weekly.  Additional tickets (which means more chances to win) will be given to any GET IN THE GAME tweens or teens that register and participate in any of our events.

Prizes may include snacks, books, sports paraphernalia, gift cards, Launch & Canobie Lake passes and more! You need not be present to win. Prizes will be drawn randomly throughout the summer after the kick-off (June 15) up until August 4.

Our goal is to have you in the game.  IF youth collectively get at least 500 tickets in the raffle jar(s), by July 30, Kathy Watson will be the moving target of water squirt toys from 6-8 on August 4 from all summer reading participants.  GET IN THE GAME to win prizes and soak her!

Join us as we start summer reading on June 1st!  Rolling registration begins and all the upcoming events that you’ve been waiting for will be unlocked and open for registration.  Have your calendar handy in advance and save the dates.  We have lots to choose from!  Don’t forget that the summer kick-off event starts with ‘Toe Jam Puppet Band’ on Wednesday, June 15th, at 6:30pm.  You do not have to be a child to enjoy this zany hilarious variety show.  Registration is required and currently available.

CONCERT IN THE *COURTYARD JUNE 16TH: Join us at 6:30pm as Joyce Andersen and Harvey Reid have combined their talents to create one of the most potent duo teams in acoustic music. They are both gifted instrumentalists, strong and versatile singers, and prolific songwriters, and are comfortable in a dizzying array of styles of roots and Americana music. They jump from show stopping Celtic jigs and old-time fiddle tunes to house-shaking blues rockers, soaring gospel duets, and achingly beautiful ballads. Reid’s legendary acoustic and slide guitar work make a perfect backdrop for Andersen’s powerful fiddling, and they take turns on lead and harmony vocals to showcase a large and interesting repertoire of original, traditional and contemporary music. They have brought audiences to their feet at folk & bluegrass festivals, clubs, coffeehouses and concert halls across the US and in Europe, and have released 4 highly-acclaimed collaboration recordings.

* In the event of inclement weather this event will be moved indoors.

PAPER MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS: Make a mountain climber! A castle climber! A rock climber! A ninja climber - even a bug climber! Using your own design, see how your climber competes when it really starts climbing! Competition climbing at its best when we finish our designs. This is a summer reading activity for children entering grades K thru 5. Registration is required starting June 1.

T/WEEN *YOGA WITH LISA WISLER: Come try out yoga on Wednesday, June 22nd, from 6:30-8:00pm!  Yoga is lots of things.  The word means 'union' as in connecting your body and mind.  This happens by learning to pay attention to your breathing while you move your body in different ways.  It can be gentle or a vigorous workout.  In this class you will have a chance to try it out and see for yourself.  Come learn, try some moves and ask your questions.

Yoga helps you tap in to the power of your own mind, and can help you relax, focus, stretch, gain strength, and get in touch with your Self...lots of things.  But most of all yoga is whatever you want it to be, and it's FUN!  Check it out!  (If there is enough interest, we may offer a second class to continue exploring new things).

*We scored and are giving away a yoga mat to each of the 15 registered participants (entering grade 5 through age 19 in the fall).  Please, ONLY sign up if you are sure you can make it so you don't take a space and mat away from other person.  THANK YOU.

HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed Memorial Day weekend in its entirety (May 28-30).  Please stock up accordingly.

Join us as we kick off our ‘Concerts in the Courtyard’ series with The Night Owl Jazz Combo on *Thursday, May 26th, at 6:30pm. This is an amateur jazz sextet made up of Timberlane High School Jazz Allstate musicians. The rhythm section is made up of Harrison Szczapa on drums, Anna Cronin on piano, and Ben Longchamp on bass. For horns, Nolan Hennessey and Zachary Hertrich play trombone while Joey Winslow from Exeter High School plays saxophone.

The group plays jazz standards such as Caravan, Tenor Madness, & Yesterdays but with the combo's own unique touch. Come join us for the evening as they perform one of America's original art forms, jazz.
*In the event of inclement weather this event will be moved indoors.  If held outside you may bring lawn chairs or blankets, or you may sit on our built-in seating in the courtyard wall.  Cross your fingers for moderate temps!

NEW to the SUMMER READING CHALLENGE: In recent years, Kathy Watson challenges the teens to earn enough raffle tickets to put her in a predicament such as pink or purple hair, creepy crawlies being put on her, and other various ‘fun’ activities.  This year the teens will join forces with the kindergarten-grade 5 youth.  Our goal is to have you in the reading game!  IF youth collectively get at least 500 tickets in the raffle jar(s), by July 30,  Kathy will be the moving target of water squirt toys provided by the library from 6-8pm on August 4 from all summer reading participants in attendance.  Encourage your children to GET IN THE GAME to win prizes and soak her!  Registration starts June 1st!
