Our renowned “Library Buddies”
program is back for the 10th consecutive year! This popular six week series
will be running from March 15 to April 19 on Wednesdays from 4-5pm. Little buddies in grades K-3 will be paired
with an older buddy in grades 6-12 to read with, create projects with, play
games with, and have one-on-one attention.
Registration is a commitment to all six weeks, barring sickness, unless
you make arrangements in advance.
We are looking for capable teens and
tweens (middle school and older only, please) to play the part of the big
buddy. Please note the six week
commitment and ask to talk to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, if you are
interested. Buddies are expected to
commit to all six weeks unless pre-arranged.
Generally, half of the time will be devoted to reading while the other
half will be spent jointly doing puzzles, games, crafts or coloring. Crafts will
be pre-selected for you. All readers’
hours will be recorded. Your time spent with us may also be used toward
community service hours (older buddies) and is great leadership and mentoring
experience!
We have separate online registration
for each of the age groups. Please be
careful to click on little buddies (K-3) OR big buddies (grades 6-12).
Registration is mandatory. Non-resident
big buddy applicants will be considered.
GIRLS WHO CODE:
Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet girls are being
left behind. While interest in computer science ebbs over time, the biggest
drop off happens between the ages of 13-17.
This is why Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization that teaches girls
computer science and programming concepts, was born. Kimball’s Girls Who Code
Club is being run by certified Girls Who Code instructor Pam Livingston and is
being assisted by Kathy Watson.
Girls Who Code is a club that takes
places at the library Thursday afternoons 2:30-4:30. It does not cost anything
to participate, but you are asked to bring a laptop to use. If this is a
problem please let us know as the library has a limited amount of laptops that
we can loan during club time. The club
will take place weekly until June 13th.
The expectation is that you will come unless you are ill or out of
town. The lessons build weekly and to
‘pass’ you need to attend 80% of the meetings.
Questions? Contact Kathy Watson at
kwatson@kimballlibrary.com or call the library and ask to talk to her. Be prepared to bring a laptop or have it
dropped off for you. Please note that
the middle school and high school buses (Bus 126) do drop off here at
2:30. Check with the bus policy and
school regarding this arrangement. This
event is for girls in grades 6-12 only.
We currently have a very small
amount of girls and are still taking newcomers.
Don’t let your daughter miss out on this awesome opportunity! Register
on the online calendar or call us at 603.362.5234.
