Kimball Library News 11/7/21

Let’s play Mah Jonng on Fridays at 1:00 PM!

If you already know how to play Mah Jongg, come join the fun! Experience levels are welcome to join us in this strategy-based (plus a bit of luck) game.  Registration is required so please use the online calendar or give us a call.

Cozy up in the meeting room of the library, share some laughs, and make some new friends. Studies have shown that Mah Jongg is a great game for keeping the mind sharp – we can all benefit from that!

Mah Jongg, a fun rummy-like game, is played with tiles rather than cards. There are many different versions of Mah Jongg all around the world. We play American Mah Jongg and follow the rules as defined by the National Mah Jongg league. One of the main differences is that American Mah Jongg uses an annual card of Official Standard Hands and Rules, against which all games are played. These cards are available from the National Mah Jongg League and you will need to bring yours along to use while playing.

*If you are reading this and would like to learn how to play Mah Jongg, keep your eye on the Library’s calendar as we plan to offer a “How to play Mah Jongg” learning session in the Spring of 2022 and at that time you are welcome to sign up to learn.

ANCESTRY: Did you know that you can access Ancestry database from the convenience of your own home? Yes, and you can visit us and use it in the Library as well!

If you’d like to visit Ancestry from home all you need to do is to sign in to our new catalog. This can be found on our website by clicking the black book icon that says LIBRARY CATALOG. From there you can sign in with your library barcode and password. Only after you sign in will you see an icon that looks like a question mark. That question mark will lead you down the rabbit trail of discovering the past.

Search over 800 million obituaries and 220 million marriages in their newspapers.com indexes. Start searching billions of records and discover your family's story. Find ancestors in the complete set of U.S. Federal Census images from 1790-1940, including name indexes. When did those significant life changing events happen in your ancestor’s life? Search the Vital Records to find out. Did your ancestors serve in the Military? The collection of military records holds the answers. When did your ancestors arrive in the U.S.? And how did they get here? Search the passenger lists and other immigration records to learn more.

Discovering who you are is becoming a favorite hobby of many. Jump into Ancestry via your valid Kimball Library card number and begin your journey now.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: The book of the month for December is 'We Were Liars' by E. Lockhart.

A beautiful and distinguished family.

A private island.

A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.

A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.

A revolution. An accident. A secret.

Lies upon lies.

True love.

The truth.

Read it.

And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
