We’ve launched! Our new library catalog and SNHLC (Southern NH Library Cooperative) is up and running. Take advantage of your “home” library card now being accepted at all three libraries: Kimball Library, Plaistow Library, and Sandown Library. Place holds from any library, walk in the door with your home library card and be able to check out items from the other two, and get to know your broader community. Please continue to exercise patience as we learn our way around with you. Log into the catalog through our website and enter your user name (14 digit library card number) and your password (your last name starting with a capital letter). From there you’ll be able to edit your password and make other changes in your personal information. You’ll also be able to set notifications up if you’d like to be electronically notified of items becoming due, holds that have arrived, materials that are overdue, etc. You’ll also be able to manage or disable your personal borrowing history as we do not have access to that information. If you have questions on how to handle your personal account, please don’t hesitate to call us.
Are you tuned into the “Create & Express” art classes on Thursday afternoons? These are fun and easy crafts for any skill level (according to the age range we give). The crafts will coordinate with the holidays and/or seasons and will often be offered for elementary age through middle school. The project slated for Thursday, Feb 23, from 4-5pm is sand art. This is being offered for children in kindergarten and up. REQUIREMENT: Please bring a clear clean wide mouth salsa jar. (Not the tall ones, the short fat kind.) You must have your own jar to participate. Please register online or give us a call for this event as space and materials are limited. More crafts (some projects as long as 3 weeks at a time) will be offered beginning March 15th. Please take a look on the website for updated information.
Our renowned “Library Buddies” program is back for the 5th consecutive year. The program will be running from March 14 to April 18 on Wednesdays from 4-5pm. Little buddies in grades k-3 can have an older buddy to read with, create projects with, play games with, and hang with. Also, we are looking for capable teens and tweens (middle school and older) to play the part of the big buddy. Please note the commitment, and ask to talk to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, if you are interested. Buddies are expected to commit to all six weeks unless pre-arranged. Generally, the first thirty minutes should be devoted to reading followed by puzzles, games, crafts or coloring. Crafts will be pre-selected for you. All readers’ hours will be recorded. Your time spent with us may also be used toward community service hours (older buddies). This year we have online registration for each of the age groups. Please be careful to click on little buddies (k-3) or big buddies (grades 6-12). This little buddy portion of program is for Kimball card holders only, please. Registration is mandatory. Non-resident big buddy applicants will be considered.

From cleaning and de-cluttering to neutralizing, and beyond, you will come away with an understanding of how and why home staging is an integral part of your sales strategy. Don’t miss this valuable presentation.
New on Tuesdays we have “The Dabblers” who are a painting and crafts group. They are looking for like-minded artisans to join them. They are seeking beginners to advanced folk in oil, acrylic or watercolor media on canvas, wood or paper. They are willing to help you get started or you can just bring in a project of your choice. This casual, friendly group meets every Tuesday from 10am to noon. Just drop in and stay for all or part of the time allotted. No registration is necessary.

You are invited to join us for assorted sweets and pink lemonade on Wednesday, February 15th, starting at noon until the goodies run out. The very generous ‘Friends of the Kimball Library’ have pronounced the day to be “Staff Appreciation Day” and they’d like the patrons to be part of the festivities. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors and friends as well give your thanks to the staff. Please make time to stop by.
Do your children like to create and express themselves artistically? New for youth on Thursdays are “Create & Express” art classes. There are 2 more classes in the month of February to choose from as the first 2 week session is already full. On the horizon for Thursday, February 16th, is a yarn bear bug craft which is slated for children in grades 2-5. On February 23, there is a sand art project available for children in kindergarten through middle school. Registration is required for both of these sessions individually and space is limited. As you can see, not all projects are for all ages. Each session will take into consideration the complexity of the craft, the materials, and the available space. The age restrictions will vary over time.
We are excited to announce that our “GO LIVE” date for our new circulation system as well as our new cooperative launch will be on Monday, February 13. Some of you have dashed out the gate already attempting to use your cards in either Sandown or Plaistow. This service is not available until we go live. You’ll be able to ‘do it all’ once the 13th of February rolls around. We are embracing the changes to come. We are asking you to be patient during the transition process as this is all new to us and we are sure that we’ll be more proficient as time goes on. We welcome your feedback after we launch and look forward to meeting new faces.

He will share his knowledge of the many uses and benefits of using herbs and spices for health and enjoyment. Steven has been participating in Farmer's Markets and Fairs for five years. You may have seen him at the Salem, NH, Farmer's Market. He will be sharing some of his special recipes and his love of blending spices. This special event will be from 7-8pm. No registration is necessary.

We have book discussions galore for all ages and February is a great month to try one out. Tweens (grades 5-8) meet on Feb 1 at 6:30pm to discuss ‘Gathering Blue’ by Lois Lowry. Teens (grades 9-12) meet on Feb 8 at 6:30pm to discuss ‘Dark Water’ by Laura McNeal. Adults meet on Feb 21 at 6pm to discuss ‘Kitchen House’ by Kathleen Grissom and/or on Feb 22 at 10:30am to discuss ‘River of Doubt’ by Candice Millard. Children (grades 2-4) meet on Feb 27 from 5:30-6:30 with their brown bag suppers. It’s the perfect time of year to get cozy with a book! Book discussions will lead you to books you would not have tried on your own, new literature loving friends, and a myriad of other compatible books and people. All discussions are open to ‘drop in’ if you would just like to listen and see what all the fuss is about.

Tech THIS out! If you got a new e-reader or gadget recently that makes you want to hide, then we can help you hold your head up high again. You can have a brief lesson here called “Turn it On!” on your tech toy (Kindle, iPad, iPod, Nook or other device compatible with Overdrive) and learn how to put a free library e-book on it. This is a basic tutorial for newbies. Please register for a Friday morning or Wednesday evening appointment. Please note that sessions will run with breaks rather than consecutively as in the past. If you take a peek on the online calendar each session has posted what the activity of the night will be. Here’s a preview of the activity scheduled for January 20th: June in January! Imagine its 75 degrees and sunny! Join us for SUMMER fun: stories, coloring pages & popsicles! (*no sunscreen required) You won’t want you or the children to miss this. Check out our plans, and then pack up the children for a fun Friday educational experience.

The crafts will coordinate with the holidays and/or seasons and will often be offered for elementary age through middle school. The first project will be a two week craft ‘Art with Heart’ that will have a valentine theme. Children will be painting and decorating a heart-shaped wooden frame the first two Thursdays in February. Children in kindergarten through grade 3 will work from 4-5pm, and youth in grades 4 and up will work from 5-6pm. This is a two week commitment. Please note that we have limited space and registration is required.
Spice up your life on Thursday, February 9th, from 7-8pm and learn the art of spice blending with Steven Scaturro. Steve is the owner of ‘Buzz Bomb World Spice Blends’ in North Hampton, NH. He will share his knowledge of the many uses and benefits of using herbs and spices for health and enjoyment. Steven has been participating in Farmer's Markets and Fairs for five years. You may have seen him at the Salem, NH, Farmer's Market. He will be sharing some of his special recipes and his love of blending spices.

About CHANGE:
We are very excited to be launching a new library system to patrons as well as offering you more choices and diversity by joining with two other libraries to offer the best of three worlds. Atkinson (Kimball Library), Plaistow Public Library, and Sandown Public Library at the end of January/early February will now be the Southern New Hampshire Library Cooperative (SNHLC). You may be wondering what exactly that means for you, our valued customer.
Here’s just a peek at what Koha, our new library system, will offer you. Koha is a web-based ILS which means that anytime you have internet you have access. You will have control over your personal account and will be able to update your information at any time. You’ll be able to personally put items on reserve and see your personal borrowing history if you choose or deny that feature if you’d prefer no record is kept. You will be able to manage via email preference options such as – receiving advance notice that items are due or overdue, items you’ve checked out, items that were checked in, and when a hold becomes available. You can choose to receive email when your items are available versus the usual phone call. We will be able to alert you personally via email if we are waiving fines because of inclement weather. These are just a few of the perks to come.
Here’s just a peek at what SNHLC, the cooperative, will offer you. You now will have the ability to check items out of all three libraries with your home library card. You will be able to view through our new library catalog what all three libraries have to offer as well as put items on hold from any of the three libraries. Each library has different times of opening and closing so you could visit one of the other libraries earlier or later than your home library’s hours. We are pleased to share resources so that we can all multiply our use. Cost and functionality were the primary reasons for deciding to change from our proprietary ILS as well as banding together. We will save a considerable amount annually by switching products, and we know that our work processes will be streamlined significantly.

Registration has begun for children’s classes! Please take note: classes that require sign-up are denoted by the asterisks. *** If you sign up, it is for the entire six week session. Registration can be done online or by calling us at 603.362.5234 ext 224.
***Book Babies (Ages 0-2) Mondays, January 24-February 27, 10:30-11am. Infants through age 2 with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, fingerplays, and songs. Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages. This 6 week session is active from 1/23 to 2/27.
***Bitty Books (Ages 2-3) Tuesdays, January 17-February 21, 10:15-11am. Children ages 2-3 with their caregivers are invited to join us for itty bitty stories, rhymes, fingerplays or songs and a simple craft. This 6 week session is active from 1/17 to 2/21.
Family Frolics (All ages) Mondays, January 23-February 27, 1:15-2pm or Thursdays, January 19-February 23, 1:15-2pm. All 'kids' (generally preschool age) and their caregivers are welcome to participate in some early literacy activities. Be prepared for music, movement, rhyme, and simple stories. This 6 week session is active from 1/23 to 2/27.
***Kiddie Lit (Ages 3-6) Tuesdays, January 17-February 21, 11:30-12:15 or Thursdays, January 19-February 23, 10:15-11am or 11:30-12:15pm. Crafts, music, new friends and adventures into literacy are found during these classes. Caretakers may stay and listen or relax in another part of the library. This 6 week session is active from 1/17 to 2/21.
Friday Freewheelers (All ages) Fridays, January 20- February 24 6:30-7:15pm. Preschool and elementary children are welcome with their parents for a 'mixed bag' of six week sessions on Friday evenings. Some possibilities include: stories, BINGO, a simple craft, science activity or games. It's a grab bag kind of evening! Come on by and take your chances. PLEASE NOTE that sessions will run with breaks rather than consecutively as in the past.
Start 2012 off right! Encourage your teen to try the teen book discussion. We also have one for tweens (grades 5-8) that was highlighted last week. Teens (grades 9-12) are welcome to join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. On January 11 we are discussing “Marcelo in the Real World” by Francisco X. Stork. Teens unprepared to discuss the book are welcome to sit in and see what we are all about. We always have plenty of candy and chat.
Here’s the final reminder that the 2nd Annual Jack Frost Jamboree is right around the corner. Once again, we’ll have crafts and games for kids as well as EMS providing snowshoes sized for a myriad of ages. We’ll have a new golf course winding through the stacks as well as refreshments for most of the day. This spectacular family event will take place on Saturday, January 21st, from 10:30am-2:30pm even though our doors will be open for our usual Saturday hours from 10am-3pm. Take advantage of the flurry of activities and stop by for all or part of the day. Our ‘rain’ date is Saturday, January 28th.
