Lady Hawke, our reading dog, visits us the 3rd Wednesday of each month. She loves to hear the children read to her! Hawke is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International and is very patient with the children. She loves to be petted and read to. Hawke is a social animal and she’ll only visit if kids register in advance. Please make time to put Hawke on your calendar for Wednesday, August 15th, from 1-2pm. Hawke likes all ages, but she is particularly sweet for emerging and reluctant readers. She never corrects or prompts your reading. Sign up the kids today.

Here is a reminder that we have a new event happening on alternate Mondays from 1-4:30pm! Whether you are a novice or an experienced Mah Jong player, come join the fun! We have someone who is willing to teach you to play if you never have had the experience. Cozy up in the Game Room of the library, share some laughs, and make some new friends. All experience levels are welcome. Feel free to bring a beverage with you.

We hope this will bring some people in the community together for a fun-filled afternoon. The leaders will teach anyone who wants to learn. It does require some strategy as well as some luck to play. A small amount of time and effort is needed to become familiar with the principles and rules of the game. Registration is required so we’ll know how many tables to prepare. Please sign up online or give us a call. The following Mondays are ready for registration: August 20, September 10, and September 24. Stay tuned as we add more dates.

Try this! Check out this event – ‘The Stuffed and the Rolled: Exploring the Intriguing Secrets of Middle Eastern Cuisine’ from 6:30-8:00pm on Tuesday, September 18th. Nawal is the author of 'Delights of the Garden of Eden: A Cookbook and a History of the Iraqi Cuisine'.

Please take note in your planning that the library will be closed on Labor Day Weekend from Saturday to Monday, September 1-3.

Kimball Library News 7/31/12

THEY DID IT! The teens submitted 822 reading tickets to the raffle jar (at the time of this publication) and the Youth Services Director has an appointment (courtesy of Janet Porter of Online Hair Salon) for Thursday, August 2nd. Readers should stop in as soon as possible before the hair fades with camera in tow. The Youth Services Director will say ‘cheese’ with you sporting her new purple and pink stripes. (We admit she is doing this with a little less enthusiasm than we’d like-haha.) We encourage you to upload any photos of this or any summer reading library photographs that you have taken to the Kimball Library facebook page. There are a number of photos on there right now that could use tagging. Congratulations to “Own the Night” t/weens, you proved you are NUMBER ONE! Kathy is already planning some crazy stunt for next year’s challenge, but note she will NOT shave her head. ;)

We will take an additional line here to please note that the absolute last day to turn in reading minutes in the children’s room is August 9th. All our kites will be flying away off the wall whether they are complete or not. We’d love it if you’d come pick yours up. 

Thank you to the many businesses and friends that have made our 2012 Summer Reading Programs a success! We appreciate all the contributions. It does take a community to raise a tremendous summer reading program. The children, tweens, and teens were grateful and excited to receive great prizes. Please extend your thanks in person when visiting the following: Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Rockingham Mall, Salem, NH, Astronomy Shoppe, Plaistow, NH, Bed Bath & Beyond, Plaistow, NH, Brookstone Park, Derry, NH, Canobie Lake Park, Salem, NH, Charmingfare Farm, Candia, NH, Eggie’s, Atkinson, NH, The Friends of the Kimball Library, Hannaford, Hampstead, NH, Loral Press, Atkinson, NH, NH Fisher Cats Baseball, Manchester, NH, Online Hair Salon, Atkinson, NH, Rye Airfield, Rye, NH, Shaw’s, Plaistow, NH, Spinners Baseball, Lowell, MA, Stillwell’s Ice Cream, Plaistow, NH, Storyland, Glen, NH, Texas Roadhouse, Salem, NH, Topsfield Fair, Topsfield, MA, Uno’s, Haverhill, MA, Victorian Park, Salem, NH, and Water Country, Portsmouth, NH.

We are continuing to run our popular preschool classes until the 3rd week in August. Sign-ups are still available for Mother Goose on the Loose, Music & Me, Bitty Books, and Kiddie Lit. Give us a call or register online. Please note that we do not have any children’s classes or events the last week in August or the first week in September. You will all be in ‘back to school’ mode and we’ll be planning fall classes. Thank you for your cooperation.

Kimball Library News 7/24/12

‘Come Dance with Us’ on Thursday, August 2, from 6:00-8:00pm. Come learn some of the dances you see on the popular TV show ‘Dancing With the Stars’. Dancers from the Krystal Ballroom Dance Studio will be here to demonstrate and teach dances like the Cha Cha, Rumba, Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Salsa, Swing, Samba, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz and some popular line dances. Bring your dancing shoes and join us for a fun free night of dancing! This event is meant for all ages who love to move!

There will be a 30 minute intermission where summer reading raffle prizes will be drawn or distributed at 6:30pm. We are mixing up how we end our summer reading program. Everyone is welcome to attend—raffle prizes are only for summer reading participants. Ice cream sundaes will be on the menu as is our tradition after we draw raffle prizes. Hot dogs, popcorn, and drinks will also be served as part of the larger gala. This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library. For more information on the Krystal Ball Room Dance Studio go to www.krystalballroom.com

LAST CALL SUMMER READERS—All summer reading programs are coming to a close. Get those reading logs in for the little ones and have your teens and tweens get their t/ween reading tickets in the jar! It’s looking scary for the youth services director. She’s pretty sorry she promised to stripe her hair pink and purple if there are 700 tickets in the t/ween jar. Do you think they will win? FIND OUT on August 2nd. If the kids win, she’ll have a new look after 2pm.

Teen and tween readers unite! In the summer we have a combination book discussion for grades 5-12. It’s not easy to find a book that spans those ages, but we think “Gregor the Overlander” by Suzanne Collins hits the mark. When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

Please register for this discussion (so we’ll know how much candy to buy) and attend on Wednesday, August 8th,from 6:30-7:30pm. Last month we had 16 in attendance. Let’s break a new record!

Uno’s Dough Raiser! Make a date for Uno’s on August 16th! Go to Uno's (Haverhill/Plaistow line) anytime on August 16th from 11:30am to closing and the Friends of the Kimball Library will get up to 20% of your total bill. This is also good on take-out orders. All you have to do is pick up a coupon at the Kimball Library and give it to the hostess when placing your order. This is GREAT way to support all those events you love to attend at the library. Bring your friends out to lunch or dinner with you! We plan to be there at various times throughout the day and night. Stop in for chow and chat. :)
