Kimball Library News 9/23/13

Craig O’Neill is Kimball Library’s featured artist.  His artwork is on display in the main library and meeting room through October 18th.  O’Neill works primarily in oils and pastels, charcoal, pen and ink, woodcuts, and linoleum cuts. He enjoys painting portraits, figures, landscapes, interiors, and combinations of them.  He paints quickly. Once the canvas is covered, whether it is a portrait, figure, or landscape, that’s when the painting begins.  He strives to convey a sense of soul of his subjects, the spirit of place for his landscapes, and to make viewing the painting an interactive experience.   His recent work focuses on capturing a mood or telling a story in the painting.  He has also been painting multiple versions of the same subject or view over time.

O’Neill has had numerous one-man shows and has participated in group shows, including shows of Stoneham’s Porter Arts Group.  He also has displayed and talked about his work on the Porter Arts Group TV Show on Stoneham local access cable.   He was featured artist of the month in February, 2013 on the TV show.  If you haven’t already, please take time to come by and view his work while it is still here.

Guess what, teenagers?!  The book of the month is Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne.  We plan to discuss this action-packed novel on Wednesday, October 9, from 6:30-7:30pm.  Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.  Six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world—as they know it—apart.

We meet the second Wednesday evening of each month from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss the book selected. Refreshments and stimulating conversation will be served. All interested high school students are welcome. Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk

We have fun planned for ages 4-7 as well.  Join us for a spot of tea with very special treats to eat and enjoy!  Register for ‘Tea for Two or Many More’ and wear your party clothes, your hat, and jewels on Saturday, October 5, from 11:30am-12:30pm.  Come and bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal with you. We'll have lots of fun! Take time to take your little one out for tea.

Please take note that the library will be closed on Monday, October 14, for Columbus Day Observed.  Plan your two-day movies and stock up on the Friday the 11th.

Kimball Library News 9/2/13

This week’s tweet is for a particular story hour that will enhance your child’s knowledge of children’s literature and will put them in touch with other preschool library users.  We offer a class entitled ‘Kiddie Lit’ for children ages 3-6 at 3 distinct times during the week.  You are invited to join us for picture books, rhymes, finger plays or songs, and theme-related crafts or games.  We offer this each Tuesday from 11:30am-12:15pm, Thursday from 10:15-11:00am, and Fridays from 10:15-11:00am.  Mrs. Birr teaches on Tuesday and Thursday, while Miss Celeste teaches on Friday.  Registration is now open and classes sometimes fill to capacity so enroll soon to avoid disappointment.

Our museum tweet this week is for the WENHAM MUSEUM.  The museum exhibits and collections are brought to life through a full schedule of programs and special events. All ages are engaged, entertained, and enlightened by special family programs, such as craft making, art, colonial life activities, musical performances, and more. From pre-school to adult, there is something for everyone.  Passes are available Tuesday through Sunday (select Monday holidays when museum is open).  Each pass admits four people at half price every day that the museum is open.  Prices are as follows:  adult $4.00 with pass, children $3.00 with pass.  Please thank 'The Friends of Kimball Library' for the generous donation of this pass.

Also making a comeback to fall programming is 'PJ Peeps' with the loveable Miss Betsy.  PJ peeps are welcome to come in pajamas and listen to several stories and get a goodnight snack. This is a story time for families and their young children capable of listening to several picture books. We are serving multiple stories and a single snack. Please check our preschool classes if you are looking for an included craft and longer session. This is a drop-in event and non-resident friends are welcome. Stories are geared for ages 4-8. Parents are welcome in pjs also. ;)  Please note that we've moved 'Peeps' back to 6:30pm to accommodate getting little ones to bed sooner.

Teens and tween gather each month to eat candy and discuss the book of the month.  This is an open meeting and as long as you fit the age criteria you are welcome to join us.  Tweens meet the FIRST Wednesday evening of each month from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss the book selected. All interested mature 5th graders and middle school students are welcome. (Not young adults, not children -- hence, TWEENagers in grades 5-8.) Teen meet the SECOND Wednesday and are in grades 9-12.  Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.  In September, the teens will be discussing ‘The Heist Society’ by Ally Carter on September 11.  In October, the tweens will be discussing ‘Life as We Knew It’ by Susan Beth Pfeffer on October 2.

Join Joan Ryan for ‘Scholarship Matters’ on Saturday, September 21, from 12:30-2pm.  For Joan Catherine Ryan, Scholarship Matters: A Parent’s Guide to College and Private Scholarships is the realization of a dream and the culmination of research that spans over twenty years.  Drawing on her own experiences as well as those of other parents, Joan has created a practical tool for parents feeling “at sea” with the overwhelming process of college admissions. Scholarship Matters demystifies the process and makes the journey so much easier.  This free program is open to the public and sponsored by the Timberlane PTSA.
