Kimball Library News 9/14/15

BEDTIME MATH CRAZY 8’S CLUB: Crazy 8s is an over-the-top after-school club that’s designed to get kids fired up about math. Every week kids get to build stuff, run and jump, make music, make a mess...and make friendships at the same time. They will get to do mischief making activities like Glow-in-the-Dark Geometry, Bouncy Dice and Toilet Paper Olympics, and they’ll get to take home some cool gadgets, too.  It’s time for math to become the cool thing to do after school!  

This particular session is facilitated by Ms. Celeste for children in grades 3-5, and it is running at Kimball Library on Thursdays from 4:30-5:30pm for consecutive sessions beginning on October 1 through November 19.   Registration is required.  Please know that when you sign up you are committing to all 8 weeks.  This is a math curriculum that can be explored online at www.bedtimemath.org.  

Disclaimer: This Crazy 8’s Club is similar curriculum to the class that was run from April to May for grades K-2.  Grade 3 children who were in the spring class may find the concepts more challenging, but the activities will be similar.

TWEEN book discussion (Register Grades 5-7): The book of the month is 'Every Soul a Star' by Wendy Mass. Told from three distinct voices and perspectives, Wendy Mass weaves an intricate and compelling story about strangers coming together, unlikely friendships, and finding one's place in the universe.

We’ll meet Wednesday, October 7^th, from 6:30-7:30pm to discuss the book selected and have first dibs on getting a book for the November gathering. Candy and thought-provoking conversation will be served. All interested tweens are welcome. (Not young adults, not children -- hence, TWEENagers in grades 5-7.) Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.  Non-resident friends are welcome.

WHAT SHALL WE DO TODAY?  ‘I’m bored.’  Do you ever hear that coming from your children?

A voice from the library recites, “What shall we do today? What shall we do today? Let's make a candy fall treat that's fit to eat, and then be on your way!”

Please register your children in grades K-5 for this edible fall scene activity taking place on Saturday, October 10, from 11-12 noon in the children’s room.

Kimball Library News 9/7/15

FRIDAY STORY TIMES: We have quite an imbalance of registrants in our Tuesday vs. Friday story times.  If you child is 2.9 or older, consider enrolling him/her in the Friday at 10:15am class.  If your child is 4 or older, consider the 11:30am Friday class.  Your children will benefit from a smaller class size and we hope to equalize the number of students in each section.  If you have already enrolled on Tuesdays it’s easy to switch!  Just call us at 603.362.5234 and ask to talk to Kathy, Celeste, or Carolyn in the children’s room.  We can make that change for you.  All preschool story times start after Labor Day.  Children may be registered at any time online or over the phone.

NEW HAMPSHIRE'S ONE-ROOM RURAL SCHOOLS: THE ROMANCE AND THE REALITY (ATKINSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY):  A presentation on 'New Hampshire's one-room rural schools: The romance and the reality' by Steve Taylor, who for 25 years was New Hampshire's commissioner of agriculture.  Steve will talk about the hundreds of one-room schools that filled New Hampshire's landscape many years ago. Steve will also talk about the lasting legacies of these schools, both good and bad, the romance and the reality.   He’ll share specifically on how these schools were financed, teacher preparation, the quality of the curriculum and the goal of student achievement.

The presentation is on free and open to the public on Thursday, October 8^th, from 6:30-8pm and is sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society.  Light refreshments will be served.

TECH TUTORIALS:  Tech THIS out!  If you have an e-reader or gadget that you want to learn how to use with free downloadable books, then we can help you.  You can have a brief lesson here called “Turn it On!” on your tech toy (Kindle, iPad, tablet, cell phone or other device compatible with Overdrive) and learn how to put a free library e-book on it.  This is a basic 30 minute tutorial for newbies. 

Please register for an appointment.   Available time slots are on the online calendar link right on our website at www.kimballlibrary.com.  Got questions regarding what you should bring?  Ask for Kathy Watson (tech toy technician) at (603) 362-5234.  (These tutorials are for resident card holders in good standing only, please.) 

Brief tutorials are also available for basic computer instructions such as setting up email, social media uses, etc.  When you register for a lesson please indicate your need.  If you can't find a slot that suits you then email kwatson@kimballibrary.com and Kathy will attempt to give you a unique appointment time.

BAG OF BOOKS: Can’t make the Fall Book & Bake sale on Saturday, September 26^th, from 8am-3pm?  Don’t you worry—we have a second chance for you at the ‘leftovers’ on Monday.  Drop by the library on Monday, September 28^th, between 10am-7pm and scoop up a bag a books for a discounted price!

TIME TO MAKE THE BRACELETS: Let your friends see the real you with this great bangled bracelet! You can wear it with your jeans or any outfit. It will be custom made by you with just paperclips, buttons, and bells! You'll love making it and wearing it!  Make one for yourself and your BFF.  

This activity is being held in the children’s room on Saturday, September 19^th, from 11am to noon.  Come on by after your fall sport or your morning doughnut run and get blinged up!  Register now and we'll be looking for you!

FEASTING FROM LITERATURE--DISCUSSION & COOKING DEMONSTRATION WITH LIZ BARBOUR: Think about all the times you have been engrossed in the pages of a novel. You join the characters and become a part of the scene, the setting and all that is taking place. You can be lost in your novel for hours when the author inserts a snack, a meal, or a culinary description that starts your mouth watering. Wouldn’t you love to know what the characters are tasting? Join ‘The Creative Feast’s’ Liz Barbour for a delicious exploration of her favorite recipes discovered hidden in novels she has read.

Following Liz’s discussion will be a cooking demonstration and sampling of two delicious recipes. Add in Liz's easy cooking technique tips and you are on your way to creating great meals you and your family will enjoy.

Liz Barbour has been cooking professionally in the Boston area since 1992 and started Liz Barbour’s Creative Feast in 2004.   Liz built her cooking career in a variety of Boston's catering and restaurant settings.  After starting her family, Liz reentered the food world as an instructor, sharing her professional experiences and knowledge with her students and clients.  Liz's cooking demonstrations and recipes are featured in various publications including NH Magazine, Nashua Telegraph, and The Hippo.  Liza has been featured on NH Chronicle and appears regularly on WMUR Channel 9's 'Cooks Corner'.  

Registration is required for this event being held on Wednesday, September 30^th, from 6:30-8pm.  Atkinson residents will be given first priority.  Non-residents are welcome to register on starting September 22^nd.

Kimball Library News 8/24/15

FALL BOOK & BAKE SALE: The Friends of Kimball Library present their annual Fall Book & Bake sale on **September 26th, 8:00am – 3:00pm.  A large selection of fiction and non-fiction books will be available.  Come early for the best selection and the baked goods!

Most books are $2.00 or less.  The best part is that all proceeds go to adult and children’s programs offered throughout the year at the Kimball Library.
If you would like to donate books, please drop off at the library by Thursday, September 24th, by 3pm.

(**The library is open for library business the normal Saturday hours 10-3 the day of the sale.)

FRUIT & VEGGIE PRINTS: Have you ever created art using fruits and veggies? Use your imagination to roll corn cobs in paint and create interesting patterns. Use oranges and lemons to decorate and make a collage. We'll try various produce to 'produce' works of art!

Drop by on Saturday, September 12th, between 11am and 1pm (come when you can and leave when you must) in the two hour time frame to join in the fun! This activity is geared for grades K-5.  Registration is not required

THE NEPAL CHRONICLES:  When travel writer Dan Szczesny and his wife, Meenakshi, traveled to Nepal to marry in Kathmandu and trek to Everest Base Camp, they knew the journey would be difficult.  What they didn't realize was how life changing their time in the land of mountains would be.
From the chaos of Kathmandu's super-charged streets to the tranquil but challenging trails of the Himalayas, The Nepal Chronicles is a deeply felt exploration of the culture and history of one of the world's most complex places.

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, September 22nd, from 6:30-7:30pm and travel to Nepal with all of us.  The Friends of the Kimball Library are graciously hosting this event.

Dan has written for a wide variety of regional and national publications.  He is currently Associate Publisher of The Hippo, now NH's largest weekly Arts and Entertainment journal.  He lives in Manchester, NH with his wife.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND:  Kimball Library will be closed for Labor Day Weekend (September 5-7).  Two day loan DVDs checked out on Thursday, 9/3 and Friday, 9/4 will be due on Tuesday, 9/8.  Stock up accordingly, and have a safe and pleasant holiday weekend.
