PEREGRINE SPRING--A MASTER FALCONER'S EXTRAORDINARY LIFE WITH BIRDS OF PREY WITH AUTHOR NANCY COWAN: Join us on Saturday, May 14^th from 12-2pm as author, Nancy Cowan, presents ‘Peregrine Spring’ to the reading public. She will be discussing the lessons she has learned in living with raptors and will have a falcon and hawk with her to view. Provided the conditions are right there will be an outdoor flight demonstration with her one of her birds of prey, a Harris's Hawk. A question and answer session will follow her presentation. In addition, she will have copies of her March release book, ‘Peregrine Spring: A Master Falconer's Extraordinary Life with Birds of Prey’ available to purchase and to have signed.

‘Peregrine Spring’, Nancy Cowan’s memoir of her thirty years living intimately with raptors, gives us a new perspective on the relationship between humans and the natural world. Cowan shares her experiences running a world-famous falconry school, and the lessons she's learned from her birds. From retrieving her falcon from the local police 'lock up,” to finding her husband in bed with a gyrfalcon, to a heart-breaking race to save her young peregrine from attack by a wild hawk, Cowan’s life is a constant, ever-changing adventure. Cowan’s birds have immersed her so much into their world that she has found herself courted by a Goshawk and bossed about by a Harris’ Hawk. The book carries her readers along, so they too, meet hawks and falcons in ways they never imagined possible.

Nancy Cowan is a master falconer, wildlife rescue expert, sled-dog sportswriter and historian, popular speaker, and award-winning writer. After spearheading a years-long campaign to win legalization for falconry in the state of New Hampshire, she and her husband founded the internationally-known New Hampshire School of Falconry. A licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Nancy has worked with a variety of hawk and falcon species which have been injured or orphaned and frequently is consulted on the care and rehabilitation of injured birds. The New Hampshire School of Falconry, is located in Deering, NH and is a federally licensed falconry.

BAKE, BOOK & YARD SALE: Drop by and take a peek at what we’ve been gathering the past six months on Saturday, May 21^st, between 8am and 2pm. A large selection of fiction and non-fiction books will be available as well as music CDs, movies, baked goods and yard sale items.

Hardcover fiction & non-fiction books are $2.00 each or 3 or $5.00. Fiction & non-fiction paperbacks are .50 - $1.00 each. DVDs & music are $1.00 - $2.00 each. Audio books range from $1.00 - $3.00 each. Children’s books are .50 for hardcover & .25 for paperbacks. Some collector & autographed books are priced individually. The Friends of the Library will have many yummy homemade baked goods for purchase. Stop by to stock up and support a great local organization.

From 8:00 - 2:00 Yard Sale items will also be on available for purchase. If you have items you would like to donate to the Friends for the Yard Sale please contact the library at 362-5234. We are not accepting clothing or large furniture items.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Kimball Library and will be used for future children's and adult programming.

HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed Memorial Day weekend in its entirety (May 28-30). Please stock up accordingly.

Kimball Library News 4/11/16

BOOK DONATIONS: It’s time to bring them in! Gather up any gently used books, DVDs, Blu-ray, or music CDs that you no longer need and bring them to us. The Town-wide Yard Sale is coming up in May and we’d like to have a nice selection for folks to peruse and purchase. These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them in advance.

Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through. We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection. If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a charitable organization. Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3). If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you in the back of the building. We’d appreciate any donations arriving by Thursday, May 19^th, before 3pm.

ADAPTIVE GARDENING with PAM AYOTTE: Many gardeners have given up on gardening due to physical limitations. Come on Tuesday, May 17^th, at 1pm to learn about the variety of adapted techniques and modified gardening tools that can be purchased or made at home. Pacing and energy conservation tips and techniques for gardening will also be covered. Success stories of the ways one has modified things in their own gardens are also welcome as we can always learn from each other.

Pamela M. Ayotte, CTRS/L, is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and the Team Leader for the Therapeutic Recreation Department at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, NH. She is responsible for all aspects of inpatient care. She has her certification as a Brain Injury Specialist, is an active member of the Brain Injury Core Team and has been involved with the development of Environment of Care for patients and a specialized Behavior Team. Additionally, she has a Master’s degree in Management and Health Care Administration from New England College and is certified as an Aquatic Exercise Leader for the Arthritis Foundation.

MAY TUESDAY AFTERNOON MOVIES: Unless otherwise indicated, we’ll be showing movies in our ‘theater’ in comfy chairs. Take a look at what’s in the queue--May 3: ‘Joy’, May 10: Youth, and May 24: ‘The Way’. Movies start promptly at 1pm. Popcorn will be served.

Kimball Library News 4/4/16

BONE BUILDERS: Starting on April 12^th, we’ll be hosting ‘Bone Builders’ classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:15-11:15am.

It is a known fact that proper strength training causes muscles to put tension on bones, which stimulates bone cell growth and increases bone density. RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) Bone Builders is based on this simple bodily response. It uses no-impact, weight bearing exercises that increase muscular strength, increase bone density, protect against fractures, and that helps to prevent falls.

Fully trained RSVP volunteers lead free, twice-weekly classes (donations are gratefully accepted).

Participants may join an on-going class at any time. A ‘Participants Release Form’ and ‘Physician Release Form’ must be completed. Forms are available at the library or can be picked up from an RSVP instructor.

SPRING ART EXHIBIT: Drop by and take a look at our local talent during the month of April. Jackie Cunningham's oil painting class is up for viewing on our walls! Ms. Cunningham is proudly featuring works by her students exhibiting beautiful landscapes and still lifes. The show runs through early May. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 15th from 6:00 - 7:30pm. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Featured artists of the class are: Carol Boudreau, Linda Balut, Linda Bourassa, Cynthia Buchan, Dorothy Kantola, Sylvia Markell, and Grace Frittitta. For questions about the exhibit please contact Jackie at 603 401-2779.

WILD HISTORY--350 YEARS OF NH WILDLIFE: Pete McVay, a volunteer from Speaking for Wildlife Program from UNH Cooperative Extension, will present Wild History--350 Years of NH Wildlife on Thursday, May 5^th, from 6:30-8pm.

The Wild History slide presentation takes participants on a virtual journey through New Hampshire’s past, focusing on changes in the land and how wildlife populations have responded over time. You’ll learn why changes in habitat in our past are behind the decline of many of our rarest species today, and why others are more abundant than in the past. You’ll also learn what you can do to help. The presentation includes handouts and other helpful materials. The presentation will include information about plants, animals, and nature in and around Atkinson. Pete McVay is a member of Atkinson’s Conservation Commission and is an avid birder and hiker. He is a volunteer for NH Audubon and Harvard University’s Natural History Museum, and a graduate of UNH’s 'COVERTS” Volunteer Wildlife Program.

This wild event is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. Light refreshments will be served.

CONSERVATION WALK: Join Pete McVay for a conservation walk on Saturday, May 7th. The time to be announced so stay tuned. The walk will be on the Pope Road land (Woodlock Park), and will include Indian Rock. It will last approximately two hours. This walk is a great follow up to the Wild History -- 350 Years of New Hampshire Wildlife presentation, held May 5th @ 6:30. You do not, however, need to attend the presentation to enjoy this informative hike in the community of Atkinson.

Kimball Library News 3/28/16

Spring vacation break is right around the corner for the Timberlane District, and we have plenty of events planned for the youth in your life. If your idea of vacation is staycation, then the Kimball Library has plans for your children and teens. See below offerings for the second part of the week. Did you miss the first article? FAIRY TALE SCAVENGER HUNT: Drop in on April 29th or 30th from 10:30AM to 2:30PM and go on a ‘Fairy Tale Scavenger Hunt’. Search for missing treasures throughout the library right out of your favorite tales! Guess the stories from the clues and earn a surprise for your very own happily ever after. J

TAKE ‘N BAKE TIMES TWO: Our last ‘Take ‘n Bake’ was so popular that we’re offering two unique times for the same activity so MORE kids can attend! Register, then join us on Thursday, April 28^th, at either 3pm OR 6pm (not both). Here's what's cooking – we will use a simple recipe for 'Snickerpoodles' to combine, take home, and bake. Yummy treats will await you to enjoy in your very own home. Bring an apron if you have one & let's create some delightful treats! Registration is required via website, in person or over the phone. Residents have priority.

KIDZ COLORING AND PAINTING: Register the little ones for a free-time coloring and painting time on Thursday, April 28^th, anytime between 10:30am and 12:30pm. Children are welcome to stay as long as they can focus on the activity. We put out our best paint kits and lots of different pages to choose from.

T/WEEN T-SHIRT BOOK BAGS: Get the key to cool with an awesome DIY t-shirt book bag. We'll be making t-shirt totes on Wednesday, April 27^th, at 6:30pm that will have you styling and the envy of all your friends.

You MUST bring--at least ONE t-shirt that would be large enough for books. (I'm sure you'll have time to make more than one, so the more you bring the better!) AND a positive I CAN DO IT attitude.

You CAN bring--fabric scissors, (the more sharp fabric scissors everyone brings the less waiting around time for everyone), embellishments (safety pins, pony beads, ribbon--anything you can attach to your bag) AND friends. Please register ALL participants so I know how many tweens to plan for. This is for grades 4-12, only.

CUPCAKE WARS: Register Grades 4-12 for Tuesday, April 26^th, 6:30-7:45pm! Each participant must prepare 6 un-decorated cupcakes prior to the event. You must bring all your decorating tools and supplies that you will need. AT the event, you’ll have 30 minutes to decorate them all. Two of the cupcakes will be used for judging—the other portion will be shared with other contestants and judges. Cupcakes will be judged on the following criteria: Appearance, taste, creativity, clean station, and presentation to judges. Participant may make any flavor of cupcake desired but, please stay within the theme of the event ‘GET IN THE GAME” in anticipation of summer reading events!

The winner will get a ‘sweet’ prize. Parents, this is for kids and supposed to be fun and not highly competitive. The t/weens are expected to do their own baking and decorating.
