Join Ms. Michelle for a ZUMBA party on Friday night, May 12^th, at 5:00pm.

Zumba®Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. Learn easy steps, play games, and explore language and cultural elements exposed in the music. Hear songs you know such as 'Get Back Up Again” from Trolls as well as songs that feature languages and rhythms from around the world.

ZUMBA helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporates fitness as a natural part of children's lives by making fitness fun.

Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in and bring water to drink. Be prepared to move a lot and get a great workout!  This event is for ages 4-14, but parents of youth in the class are welcome to move along with us.

HIKING: This year will be the 250th Anniversary of Atkinson and so we thought it was fitting to celebrate what is on our own conservation land. Join us as Kevin Martin, author of Big Trees of New Hampshire, takes us on a hiking adventure to the Big Ash Tree on the Sawyer Conservation land in Atkinson.  Assisting Kevin on the walk will be Pete McVay, who is a member of Atkinson’s Conservation Commission, a NH Audubon volunteer, and a graduate of UNH’s ‘COVERTS” Volunteer Wildlife Program.

We will meet up at Sawyer Conservation land on Saturday, May 6^th, at 10:00 AM.  The access point to the trailhead is off of Sawyer Avenue, just off Main Street.  The gated fire lane by the dog walk trail will be open that day to accommodate cars and there is some limited parking on Sawyer Avenue as well. We also encourage folks to car pool.

Registration is required.  We don’t want to start hiking without you, so please let us know that you plan to attend.  *We love our furry friends but we ask that you do not bring your dog the day of the hike. Thank you!

NEW ENGLAND LIGHTHOUSES (ATKINSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY): Everyone knows that there is 'something about lighthouses' that gives them broad appeal, but their vital role in our history and culture is little appreciated. Our early nation was built on maritime economy, and lighthouses were an essential part of the system. Due to automation, traditional lighthouse keeping is a way of life that has faded into the past. Jeremy D'Entremont tells the history of New England's historic and picturesque lighthouses primarily focusing on the colorful and dramatic stories of lighthouse keepers and their families.

About the presenter: Jeremy D'Entremont has written more than a dozen books and 300 articles on lighthouse history and other maritime topics. He is the official historian of the American Lighthouse Foundation and the founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. D'Entremont has lectured and narrated cruises from Maine to California, and his photographs have appeared in many books and magazines. He is also the Editor of the website 'New England Lighthouses: A Virtual Guide' at www.newenglandlighthouses.net. He emphasizes the rich human history of lighthouse keepers and their families in his presentations.

Free and open to the public, this program is possible through the New Hampshire Humanities.  Join us on May 11^th at 6:30pm.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND CLOSING: Please note that we are closed Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 20^th through Monday, May 22^nd.  This means that 2 day loans taken on Thursday will not be due until Tuesday.  HUZZAH!  Stock up accordingly.

Kimball Library News 4/17/17

APRIL VACATION WEEK EVENTS CONCLUDED:  Join us for a Teddy Bear Picnic on Saturday, April 29^th from 11:30am-12:30pm, as we conclude our vacation week events. Bring your favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal, a bagged lunch, a picnic blanket, parents or grandparents, and eat lunch with a big Teddy Bear! You will have opportunity to take a picture with the bear and dance with him to his favorite teddy bear songs. Read a book about teddy bears and decorate your bear with ribbons, ties, and more.

If it is rainy or cold, the picnic will be held inside the library. Please register adults and children so we can have an accurate anticipated head count.  Do this online or give us a call.  The Teddy Bear can’t wait to meet you!  Save him a dance!

If you missed a staycation event in the articles from prior weeks, all the information is on the website.  Please look us up and then sign up.  There is something for everyone.

SPRING BOOK SALE: In conjunction with the Town-wide Spring Yard Sale on Saturday, May 20th, the Kimball Library in Atkinson will be holding the Spring Book Sale starting at 8:00am.  There will be more than 3500 clean and sorted volumes available for children and adults.  Rumor has it that the early birds DO get the best selection.

This year’s offerings include a large collection of literary criticism, poetry, literary biographies, short stories, classics and older science fiction. A valuable donation of railroad history books was given to the sale and all of those books will be sorted in a separate collection.

Our regular book sale collections include hard cover and paperback fiction, cookbooks, history, memoirs, biographies, gardening and many self-help volumes.  We will also offer DVDs, music CDs, and miscellaneous puzzles and games.  Our prices range from $ .10 to 2.00 for the regular stock. Some “special” books are priced individually. 

There will be a “Bag Day” on Monday, May 22nd.  Remaining stock will be sold in either $3.00 or $5.00 bags – as much as you can fit!  Don’t you just love a bargain?

Donations will be accepted until May 17th.  Please make sure your items are in good condition.  As always, we do not accept text books, magazine, or Reader’s Digest condensed novels.  If you have any questions, please contact Marnie Finn at 603-489-1380.

BIG TREES OF NH: Author Kevin Martin will present: ‘Big Trees Of New Hampshire: Short Hikes to the Biggest Trees in New Hampshire from the Seacoast to the North Country’ on Thursday, May 4^th, at 6:30pm.  Kevin shares stories of big trees around the state, along with information about their history, management, and caretaking.  His presentation brings you through the woods and into some cities all over New Hampshire to find these impressive living parts of our landscape.

His book features 28 hikes across the state to the largest trees and some interesting facts such as: the state's largest northern white cedars in Clarksville that have been marked by bears for generations, and the horse chestnut in Portsmouth that was planted by a signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  

Did you know that New Hampshire has several national champion big trees?  Kevin will show and discuss the state’s biggest trees and also discuss one of his earliest big tree finds right here in Atkinson.  (*Come back on Saturday, May 6^th when we meet up with Kevin who will take us on a hike to see his big tree find on our own town conservation land.)

Registration is required for this event and the 10am walk on May 6^th. Books will be available after the presentation for those interested in purchase.

Kimball Library News 4/10/17

CUPCAKE WARS: It’s time for our 3^rd annual ‘Cupcake Wars’!  Each year there are fun and fabulous entries!  Tweens and teens (grades 4-12) register in advance and complete their decorating right at the library.  This year’s fun and tasty event is being held on Tuesday, April 25^th, at 6:30pm.  Register ASAP and start dreaming about your entry. Our theme is ‘Build a Better World’ in anticipation of summer reading events.

PARTICIPATION RULES~ 1. Anyone can participate in grades 4-12.  This is for singles--not a partner event.  2. Each participant must prepare 6 un-decorated cupcakes prior to the event.  You must bring all your decorating tools and supplies that you will need.  3. AT the event, you’ll have 30 minutes to decorate them all. TWO of the cupcakes selected by you will be used for judging.  4. Two of the cupcakes will be used for judging—the other portion will be shared with other contestants and judges.  5. Cupcakes will be judged on the following criteria: Appearance, taste, creativity, clean station, and presentation to judges. Participant may make any flavor of cupcake desired but, please stay within the theme of the event ‘BUILD A BETTER WORLD” in anticipation of summer reading events!

We sample each other’s work after the judging.  Be prepared to share.  :)

 *The winner will get a ‘small’ prize.  Parents, this is for kids and supposed to be fun and not highly competitive.  The t/weens are expected to do their own baking and decorating.

APRIL VACATION WEEK EVENTS CONTINUED:
On Wednesday the 26th, we will be having ‘Fun with Apps’ starting at 6:30pm for grades 4-6.  Do you love to find new ways to use apps on a phone, tablet or computer? Join us to work as a group to find interesting ways to use apps in our library.

Swap your face with a character on the cover of your favorite book with the Face Swap app. Learn how to bookmark and 'shelve' books you have read and want to read on Goodreads app. Find some new choose your own adventure and audio book apps that you can use at home. Even find tips on how you can organize lists, homework assignments, and chores with the Post It app.

No need to bring your electronics. We will provide several for the group to use.  (Parents, these are great tips for you, too!  Let your child teach you after they come to the class.)

If you're tired of hearing 'don't play with your food' at home, come play with your food at the library on Thursday, April 27^th. ! Make a macaroni bracelet, do mosaic art with cheerios, and see what kind of foods you can stamp and paint with. Stay for a little or a long time and feel free to drop in any time between 2:30 and 5:30.  Register ages 3-13 so we will have enough supplies.

On Friday the 28th, ‘Where is Waldo?’  

Can you help us find the many Waldo's around the library? We are also LOOKING for help making our own Where's Waldo mural! Join in on the Wacky Waldo day. Stay for a little or a long time and drop in any time between 10:30 and 2:30.  Register ages 3 and up.  

Stay tuned for the Saturday event next week or ‘cheat’ and look online!  Register early for all these events to avoid disappointment.
