Kimball Library News 1/8/18

“Library Buddies” is one of the exciting events that has been bursting at the seams for the past 9 years!  This *crowd-pleasing event will be happening for 6 weeks on Wednesdays from 4-5 PM on the following dates: February 7th, 14th, 21st and March 7th, 14th and 21st. Each week teens (youth in grades 6-12) will be assigned to little buddies in kindergarten through grade 3.  Library buddies will read or be read to for the first 30 minutes alternating with puzzles, games, and/or coloring activities for 30 minutes.  This is a great opportunity for the younger set to practice listening to books of their choice or for emerging readers to try out their skills on an older buddy. Big buddies will practice their leadership and mentoring skills. Fun will be had by all! You can join us but you must register as seats are limited. 
Need a library buddy?  Want to be a library buddy?  We need your children to participate and experience the joy of being a literary mentor or participant.  You may register on the online calendar or call us and ask for the Youth Department (603) 362-5234 x224, or drop in and personally speak to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director.  All interested BIG buddies must speak with Kathy directly and be committed to an early arrival time.

The buddy program does have age restrictions.  BIG buddies must be in middle or high school.  LITTLE buddies must be in kindergarten through grade three.

*Due to the high demand for this program, all buddies must be registered and committed for all six weeks.  Exceptions will be made for the t/ween buddies as long as they get approval in advance.

ASK A MUSLIM ANYTHING: Arab-American Muslim Robert Azzi is an Exeter based photojournalist and columnist who spent several decades working in and writing about the Middle East. He put together the 'Ask a Muslim Anything’ program to increase awareness and reduce misunderstandings about Islam. This program, taking place on Tuesday, February 13^that 6:30 PM, is an opportunity for conversation about identity, conflict, interfaith relations, international affairs, Islamophobia, or whatever comes up.  He welcomes questions on Islam, on being Muslim, on issues related to terrorism and on the geopolitics of the Middle East as he has experienced and understands them. An Arab American Muslim, Mr. Azzi writes on issues of Identity, Conflict, and Islam, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South.  Born in New Hampshire, he’s lived in Beirut, Cairo, Athens, Jeddah and New York. 

Azzi has been a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, a member of the Leadership Council of the Harvard Divinity School, an advisor to Tufts University’s Fletcher School committee on Islam and South-West Asia and a board member of ACLU-NH. As a photojournalist his work has appeared frequently in such publications as Life, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Fortune and other domestic and international publications.

At Phillips Exeter Academy he once served as advisor to the Middle East Society and to the Muslim Student Association (MSA). During the 1990s war in the former Yugoslavia, Azzi initiated a project that brought 85 students from Bosnia-Herzegovina to live with American families, empowering them to continue their education until it was safe to return home.

Today, Azzi is a columnist whose work appears in The Concord Monitor, Foster’s Daily Democrat (Dover), and The Portsmouth Herald – where he attempts to contextualize, for an 'Outside-the-Beltway’ audience, Islam and the Middle East by speaking in the voice of The Other. “People don’t know what they don’t know,” Azzi tells his audience. “I want to open up new perspectives for my readers – especially for those who don’t often agree with me – and expose them to points-of-view, I believe are important and which they might not have previously considered.”  Most recently, he appeared on NHPR with Peter Biello.

ATTENTION! BIG NEWS about our NEW DIGITAL SERVICES!  500,000 Titles – Instantly available! No waiting! We are excited to introduce Hoopla Digital to our library.

On January 15, 2018, we will be introducing a new, best-in-breed service that is fun, fast and reliable: Hoopla Digital!!  With hoopla, we will have immediate access to: movies, full music albums, eBooks, audiobooks, TV episodes, comics and graphic novels.

ALL of this content will be available to our patrons in one all-inclusive mobile app or website. The platform is simple, intuitive and free to our patrons. BEST OF ALL? There is NO WAITING for titles, the collection contains half a million titles and is growing every day.

Here are some other great features of Hoopla: Borrowed content is available for immediate streaming on a computer or mobile device, on the digital app, and borrowed content can be temporarily downloaded for offline use (yes, you can watch movies and listen to movies and audiobooks while you are traveling!)  Also, music albums can be listened in their entirety or shuffled between other checked out albums. Hoopla’s eReader, Action View, is interactive, allowing a comic book to be read panel by panel!   AND, Hoopla has a Kid’s Mode setting, allowing young people access to content geared towards ages 12 and under.

As a Kimball Library card holder, we are going offer you exclusive use of our new Hoopla digital service for free! To register, please visit the Apple or Google Play store and download the hoopla digital app, or visit www.hoopladigital.com and select our library from the list!  This will be available starting January 15^th, but you can go to the hoopla website and read all about it now.

Hoopla Digital will NOT be replacing our other online digital resources such as Overdrive and the Libby App, and the thousands of books available through Tumblebooks. You can continue to digitally check e books, audiobooks and children’s interactive books via those formats. Visit our website and click on Downloadable Books and Tumble Books on the right hand side of the top menu for more information.
Please note Hoopla is for members in good standing, so be sure to stop in with an ID if your card needs renewal and be sure that you have less than $15 in fines.  We are excited to kick off the New Year with this great service.  Are you concerned the kick-off is when we are not open?  Don’t be—it’s all online!

PRACTICES THAT GROW THE BRAIN SERIES ~ MINDFULNESS: Thursdays--February 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd (*A snow make up day will be determined) 6:30 – 7:30 PM.

Take advantage of ‘Practices that Grow the Brain Series’ with Liz Korabek-Emerson. Try one or give all four sessions a go!

In this series of one hour workshops participants will learn the practices that actually grow the grey matter of the brain and help individuals become more resilient, emotionally intelligent and happier. Each workshop focuses on a single topic and will provide formal instructions for the practice, exercises for integrating the practice into your life and discussion.

This series will be led by Liz Korabek-Emerson who is a certified mindfulness instructor, transformational workshop leader and creative coach.  She is owner of Korabek Training and the Grow the Brain Series addresses the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Prefrontal Cortex, Hippocampus and Insula Cortex of the brain.  She has been designing and facilitating mindfulness programs for organizations since 2012, including Portsmouth Hospital, Beacon Hospice, and Liberty Mutual.

Kimball Library News 12/25/17

All library cards need renewal once per year to protect the taxpayer from non-residents using the library services that they have paid for.  Now that we are offering more and more downloadable items (and there are more coming!) we need to take extra precautions that only those in town have access to those benefits.  Beginning in January of 2018, when it’s time to renew your card you will be asked to produce a driver’s license or other photo ID to ensure that we are taking good care of your investment in us.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.  And stay tuned for exciting digital hoopla to come!

MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE: Infants through age 2+ with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs modeling after the Mother Goose curriculum. We meet on Mondays at 10:30 and have a wide range of children from babies through age 4 as siblings often participate.  Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages.  It’s a great way to meet other parents, grandparents, and caretakers.  Many children in this class end up attending other classes and gatherings and it all started with Mother Goose!
If you sign up, we consider you registered for rest of this academic school year with some exceptions for holidays and such. Please send us an email or call if you cannot attend to help with our preparation. Thank you!

MORE ABOUT PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS: It is not too late to join us if the sessions are not closed due to over-enrollment.  We offer Mother Goose (infants through age 2+), Bitty Books (ages 2-3), and 3 Kiddie Lit (ages 3-6) classes on a weekly basis.  S.T.E.A.M runs in 6 week sessions for ages 3-6.  New on the docket is Sensory Story Time for ages 2-3!  Check our online calendar or give us a call to see if we have room for your little ones.  We do require registration so we can adequately prepare and manage all the children.  

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: We have full slate of movies chosen for Tuesdays at 1pm in January.  Popcorn is provided.  Movies are subject to change, but at the time of this press release the movies for January 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30^th are as follows: ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Stronger’, ‘Battle of the Sexes’, ‘Victoria and Abdu’l, and ‘Detroit’.  The early birds get the best seats!  See you there.

Were you lucky enough to get a new tech gadget for the holidays but a little afraid of how to use it?  Try contacting kwatson@kimballlibrary.com for a 30 minute appointment.  Shoot an email saying what your gadget or issue is and she’ll book time to work with you one-on-one.  Particularly get on board with learning how to borrow and download items for free from Overdrive.  Not sure what that is?  Then it’s definitely time for an appointment!
