Kimball Library News 5/14/18

Starting on June 1^st, school aged youth can register to win prizes and start signing up for popular and awesome events before we are ‘SOLD OUT’. Our summer reading program is going to be fun filled this year. Sign up earlier for more time to enter our raffles!

Registration is rolling throughout June and July so anytime you stop in your child or teen can get started. Registration is in person only and literally will take a few minutes or less.

LIBRARIES ROCK SUMMER KICK-OFF: Save Wednesday, June 20^th, at 6:30 PM for an event that people of all ages will not want to miss in the Kimball Library Courtyard: a concert extravaganza with Keith Munslow.

In his highly interactive triple-whammy show, Keith delivers fun, funky music, lightning-fast cartooning, and hilarious stories that will have grown-ups laughing as much as the kids! Keith’s rhythmic piano playing, on-the-spot improvisations, and quick wit combine for an interactive, upbeat, positive experience. His work reflects real-life experiences of kids and families with honesty, humor, and a keen eye for detail. It’s a fast-paced ride, so hang on and don’t blink – you might miss something!

Please register all ages in the family and include your email and phone so we can contact you if our courtyard is being rained or snowed out (EEK). If we need to use our back-up weather location, Atkinson Academy, you will receive email notification and we will post an announcement on the Kimball Library website.

SONG WRITING ROCKS: Keith will also be doing a songwriting workshop before the show specifically for children in grades 2-6 that will take place in the meeting room at the library starting promptly at 5:15 PM.

Writing a song is simply a matter of picking something you know and talking about it honestly. In this workshop, students not only learn the basics of rhythm, rhyme, meter and melody – but also that tying your shoes, missing the bus, or eating a gross hot lunch can be the stuff of great music!

Please register youth entering grades 2-6 in the fall of 2018. Space is limited to 25. Kimball Library cardholders have priority, but this announcement should spur you to register ASAP.

Do take note that both the show and the workshop must be registered for separately. We are able to have this amazing musical kick-off opportunity thanks to The Elizabeth Smith Estate.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES KICK-OFF: Here is your reminder to join us in the 2018 Summer Concert in the Courtyard Kickoff with Don Campbell on Thursday, June 21^st at 6:00 PM. The Don Campbell Trio includes a bassist and Durham, NH musician, Tom Yoder, on fiddle and mandolin. This group has been here in the past and is a sell-out crowd! Please take time to invite friends and neighbors for this wonderful opportunity.

In the event of inclement weather this concert will be held indoors. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

Kimball Library News 5/7/18

Preschool story times such as Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, and Kiddie Lit are continuing to meet until June 15^th. We will have two weeks off during the final two weeks in June, and then the ‘summer camps’ will begin for those same age groupings the week of July 1^st and will run until August 10^th. Summer camps have their own registration and you may jump on the website even now or call the library to get your children on the list. Happy summer scheduling!

STAND OUT IN THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS: Geared to high school students and parents, join us as College Admissions Coach, Nancy Steenson discusses the following topics: merit scholarships vs. financial aid, extracurricular activities, the benefit of being well-rounded, writing powerful college essays that get noticed, strategies to increase chance of admission at selective schools, and what you need to know about standardized tests. Also up for discussion are recommendations – who to ask, when to ask, what to ask.

It's never too early to start planning. Registration is required for this timely event on Monday, June 11^th at 6:30pm. High school juniors should especially take heed. Tick tock!

About the presenter: Nancy Steenson, a graduate of Tufts University, served on the Timberlane Regional School Board for six years, and was chairman for two. During that time, she served on a number of committees, including the Curriculum Committee, which she co-chaired for four years.

Nancy is passionate about education, and has always advocated for strong academics in the public school system in order to prepare students for college. She believes that many students can underestimate the college admissions process. With her guidance, students have been accepted into very selective colleges and top programs in their field.

FAMILY ZUMBA: Join us for a fun and vigorous workout to music you love! Get exposed to dance moves from around the world in repetitious formats that are easy to follow. If you aren't sure- just move your feet to the beat!

Bring your family members, kids ages 4 and up and adults, too, to join the ultimate dancing party. Get healthy and strong together and have fun doing it! This class is taking place on Friday, June 8th, at 5:00 PM. We will rock out in the courtyard if weather cooperates, otherwise we will be in the meeting room.

Please wear clothing you can move in, and bring supportive footwear and your water bottle.

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed for the entire Memorial Day weekend. Stock up accordingly! Our doors will reopen on Tuesday at 10 AM. Remember—Overdrive, the Libby App, Hoopla, and Tumblebooks are open 24/7.

Kimball Library News 4/30/18

We realize that the outdoor temperatures just finally went above 40 degrees, but we have been busily preparing for summer reading activities and performances for months now. We are not ready to have our big reveal yet, but we will entice you with the following…

It appears as though in a blink of an eye it’s almost time once again to register for summer reading! Starting on June 1^st, school aged youth can register to win prizes and start signing up for popular and awesome events before we are ‘SOLD OUT’. Sign up earlier for more time to enter our raffles!

Registration is rolling throughout June and July so anytime you stop in your child or teen can get started. Registration is in person only and literally will take only a few minutes or less.

“Libraries Rock’ is the summer reading theme, and registration is open to Atkinson youth entering kindergarten to age 19 (as of Fall 2018). Events will be open to all, but we prefer you sign up at your home library for general registration.

Once you are registered, all you have to do is visit the library and check something out to earn a participation ticket for a raffle jar of your choice. Be sure that your legible name and phone number is on the ticket.

Hint --à You can scan your library card into your smartphone or iPod in the Keyring app so you always have it available to check items out.

Drop your ticket in one of the raffle jars near the main desk (grades 6-12) or the children’s room desk (grades K-5) to be eligible for random prize drawings held weekly. Additional tickets (which means more chances to win!) will be given to any tweens or teens that register and participate in any of our events.

Prizes may include snacks, books, toys, gift cards, Water Country & Canobie Lake passes and more! You do not need to be present to win. T/weens have mostly gift cards or events as prizes whereas the littles have toy and event options options. Prizes will be drawn randomly throughout the summer after the kick-off (June 20) up until August 1st.

Show that kids and teens ROCK by being part of the library community! Register, participate in events, and read! *All events have a required registration. Sign up ASAP to avoid disappointment.*

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES: You will be pleased that we have 6 exciting concerts awaiting you for the upcoming summer. The first of the lot starts in June on the 21^stat 6pm. Join us in 2018 Summer Concert in the Summer Courtyard Series kickoff with Don Campbell.

Don Campbell performs between 150-200 shows per year and has released 14 CDs over his career. He has opened and/or performed with a long list of folk, country and rock music greats including Jonathan Edwards, Carrie Underwood, Willie Nelson, and Keith Urban and has been honored with national awards such as the True Value Showdown $50,000 Grand. He was named Maine’s Best Singer-Songwriter for six consecutive years (2004-2009) in the Maine Sunday Telegram’s Annual Readers Poll. The Don Campbell Trio includes a bassist and Durham, NH musician, Tom Yoder, on fiddle and mandolin.

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed for the entire Memorial Day weekend. We will be open our regular hours on the Friday, May 25^th, from 10AM-8PM, and then closed Saturday, the 26^th through Monday, the 28^th. This means, drum roll, that if you take a ‘new’ 2 day loan on Thursday the 24^th or Friday the 25^th it is not due until Tuesday, May 29^th! Stock up accordingly! Our doors will reopen on Tuesday at 10 AM.
