Kimball Library News 5/20/19

The time you’ve been waiting for is here!  Summer reading registration begins June 5th!  We have over 50 programs coming up on the docket that you can sign up for.  The sooner you register, the sooner you can enter our fabulous raffles.  Youth entering kindergarten through college are eligible.  Sign-ups are in person only, so send or bring the youth in!

Don’t miss out on the program ‘Kick-Off’ happening at Atkinson Academy on Wednesday, June 19th, at 6:30 PM with world renowned scientist and performer Keith Michael Johnson in ‘A Secret World of Bubbles’. In this unique show, you will see many bubble sculptures, some bigger than bathtubs, others are fog-filled spinning geometric shapes!  Please note that this event is free and open to all, but we do request that you register online, in person, or over the phone.  All ages are welcome but science concepts are geared for school-aged youth and adults.  We are grateful for the Elizabeth Smith Estate for sponsoring this exciting STEM event.

STEM ENGINEERING LAB: Register, and then join us anytime between 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM on Friday, June 21st, in the Youth Department at the library for some time exploring, building and creating with our STEM building supplies. Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our magnetic tiles, brain flakes, KEVA planks, Legos, and marble runs.  It bears noting that we’ve spied adults well above the teen years enjoying exploring and creating with all of the aforementioned.  These ‘toys’ are not just for future engineers!

Note: Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects (marbles) as potential choking hazards.

For more upcoming ‘A Universe of Stories’ summer reading programs, check out our online calendar and stay tuned!

UNLAUNCH’D VOICES: This program opens with the elderly Whitman on the evening of his seventieth birthday. The audience is a visitor in his room as he prepares for his birthday celebration. Whitman begins to reminisce during the telling. He transforms into his young vibrant self and we begin to trace back with him the experiences that led to the creation of ‘Leaves of Grass’, his lifetime work. The first part of the performance explores Whitman’s preoccupation with the self and his resolve to write with 'free and brave thought…' In the second part of the performance, Whitman’s life is changed forever by the Civil War. It is here that he finds 'the most important work of my life,' nursing the wounded soldiers in the hospitals. Through Stephen Collins’ recitation of poetry and readings of actual letters, we experience Whitman’s movement from selfishness toward selflessness and his growth into a mature artist who is at peace about 'himself, God and death.'

Stephen Collins is a Shakespearean trained actor with 40 years of theatrical experience under his belt. He has performed as Walt Whitman over 1,000 times and been met with rave reviews. Mr. Collins’ performance does not just deliver the poetry; he brings the poet to life on the stage. The show conveys an understanding of the impact and the reactions of the characters to their respective times, giving the audience not just a performance, but an experience.

Free and open to the public.  Please help us plan accordingly and register to attend this event happening on Thursday, June 20th, at 6:30 PM here at the library.

This program is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and sponsored by Atkinson Historical Society.  For more information on New Hampshire Humanities visit www.nhhumanities.org.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: Coming up at 1 PM! June 11th is featuring ‘The Upside’ and June 25th is showing ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’.  Friends are welcome to join us and we share the free popcorn.  😊

BROWN BAG BOOK CLUB: Grades 3 and 4 are invited to try the last meeting for this academic year on Thursday, June 20th at 6:30 PM.  Since summer reading will have launched, we will be in the theme.  Our book for this month is ‘Zita the Space Girl’ by Ben Hatke. This is a fun, fast-paced story of a brave girl and her brother who are whisked through a portal into space. The aliens are imaginative and fun, and the art is whimsical and engaging.  Register, bring supper in a bag, and we’ll provide the drinks, dessert, and fun!

SECRET WORLD OF BUBBLES: ‘A Universe of Stories’ is this year’s summer reading theme and that means you will find performers, classes, events, and programs that are all ‘Outta this World’ for all ages! We kick off the fun with world renowned scientist and performer Keith Michael Johnson in ‘A Secret World of Bubbles’ on Wednesday, June 19th at 6:30 PM in Atkinson Academy’s gymnasium. In this unique show, you will see many bubble sculptures, some bigger than bathtubs, others are fog-filled spinning geometric shapes!

Keith Michael Johnson was the first bubble artist to receive a government grant in which he popularized science through bubble performances. He’s been featured on the Discovery Channel and National Geographic TV and uses bubbles, massive and miniature, to explain liquids, solids, gasses, geometry, tension and pressure.

While those demonstrations snare viewers’ attention—Keith reveals the science behind the magic, unfolding the "how-to" like a mystery, making it both educational and unforgettable. Pack the whole family in the car and invite your neighbors and friends along for the bubbliest adventures while you’re at it!

Please note that this event is free and open to all, but we do request that you register online, in person, or over the phone.  All ages are welcome but science concepts are geared for school-aged youth and adults.  We are grateful for the Elizabeth Smith Estate for sponsoring this exciting STEM event.

Both sets of youth can enter to win prizes from June 5th to August 15th such as tickets to the movies, local trampoline parks, amusements parks, sporting events, gift cards to ice cream and donut shops and more just by visiting the library and checking out materials. TEN HOURS UNTIL DAWN: During the height of the Blizzard of 1978 the pilot boat ‘Can Do’ set out from Gloucester with five men onboard to assist a lost Coast Guard boat and an oil tanker that was in a Mayday situation. Ten Hours Until Dawn tells the story of what happened on that awful night when the seas were producing monstrous waves of 40 feet and the wind was screaming at 100 miles per hour. Using photo slides of the boats, the men involved, and ferocious moments of the storm, Michael Tougias will take the viewer through this incredible night where many lives hung in the balance. With the aid of maps, Tougias lets the audience see the progression and location of these boats off the Massachusetts coast, and explains what happened and why.

This event is free and open to the public. Please help us plan accordingly by registering and join us on Wednesday, June 5, from 6:30-8:00 PM.  This program is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and sponsored by Atkinson Recreation. For more information on New Hampshire Humanities visit www.nhhumanities.org.

About the presenter: A graduate of St. Michael's College, Michael Tougias is a lecturer and award-winning author of 20 non-fiction books published by Simon and Schuster. His book, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The 1 Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do in the Blizzard of 78, was selected by the American Library Association as one of the 'Top Books of the Year' and described as 'a white-knuckle read, the best book of its kind.'

OUTTA THIS WORLD STITCH FOR TOTS: T/weens are invited to give back to the less fortunate this summer every Monday starting June 17th by knitting and crocheting with us. Projects to give away may include bunnies knit from squares, hats, sweaters, booties, or squares to contribute to baby blankets. Come every Monday between 3 and 4:30 or drop by on the occasional weeks you are available. You’ve built up those finger muscles with your texting, put them to good use and have fun with us as well!
