Kimball Library News 2/12/23

We have activities for the kids in your lives going on all of vacation week from February 27^th to March 3^rd. If you missed an article describing some of the events, please visit our website or blog listed at the end of this article.

CRAFTY KIDS: Make two crafts today, not just one! Have you made a dancing princess before? Or a straw rocket that works? Kids love to craft, and we aim to please. Join us on Thursday, March 2^nd from 3:30-4:30 PM to get crafty with Mrs. Birr.

No registration required, so please just drop in.

READER’S THEATER: Do you like to read? Would you want your reticent reader to get a little practice reading a play? Have your kids take a part in the reading night at the Kimball Theater. Everything is ready for the theater magic, but we need eager readers in grades 1-5 to participate on March 2nd from 6:00-7:00 PM.

Please register so we have the right sized play for the number of readers and enough scripts for all.

POKEMON HUNT: Can you find ‘em all? Stop by the Children’s Room on Friday, March 3rd between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM to pick up your Pokedex and see how many you can find hiding in the Library. When you've found them all, turn it in for a special little prize! Come when you can, leave when you must.

WINTER SLIME: Join us to make your very own winter slime here at the Library on Friday, March 3^rd at 1:00 PM. Add glitter, color, and other items to make it unique.

Please be advised that we will probably get messy, so dress accordingly! Youth in kindergarten to grade 5 are invited to register to participate.

BRING YOUR OWN CRAFT, PAINT & COLOR: Come unwind, de-stress and create every week on Mondays between 12:30 and 2:30 PM. Individuals come together to dabble in painting, coloring or creative crafts using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil. Folks are required to bring their own supplies to work on their canvas, wood, sketchpads and coloring books. Bring whatever project you are working on. Group size will be limited, and registration is required.

Research shows that creative activities help you relax. This is an open time so feel free to stay the entire two hours, leave early or come late. Remember, this is a no stress event so if you only have half an hour to spare then spend it relaxing with fellow creative art enthusiasts.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about Bruiser by Neal Shusterman on March 1st at 7:00 PM! We serve candy and the coolest conversation. Register yourself and your bestie.

EVENING BOOK GROUP: February 21^st at 6:00 PM we will discuss The Many Daughters of Afong Moy by Jamie Ford.

As painful recollections affect her present life, Dorothy discovers that trauma isn’t the only thing she’s inherited. A stranger is searching for her in each time period. A stranger who’s loved her through all of her genetic memories. Dorothy endeavors to break the cycle of pain and abandonment, to finally find peace for her daughter, and gain the love that has long been waiting, knowing she may pay the ultimate price.

MORNING BOOK GROUP: February’s choice pick is Snow by John Banville. We will meet on February 22nd at 10:15 AM.

Following the discovery of the corpse of a highly respected parish priest at Ballyglass House, the County Wexford family seat of the aristocratic, secretive Osborne family, Detective Inspector St John Strafford is called in from Dublin to investigate. Strafford faces obstruction from all angles, but carries on determinedly in his pursuit of the murderer. However, as the snow continues to fall over this ever-expanding mystery, the people of Ballyglass are equally determined to keep their secrets.

STORIES & CRAFT: Preschool age children can start their day right by making something special! They can get their little hands ready to work and have fun, too. No registration required for this special class on Tuesday, February 28th, at 10:15 AM during our week of Staycation activities.

BE ZEN: Stay-cations are for relaxing, and we have that in mind and have blocked off Tuesday, February 28th from 3-5:00 PM for your kids and teens to drop by. Ages 10+ will gather to relax with adult coloring, try Zentangle, or use some of our self-soothing items in the Atkinson Room. Preschool to age 10 will gather in the Children’s Craft Barn where we will have some select soothing activities out such as coloring and sensory play. Come when you can and leave when you must. As always, bring a friend because the more, the merrier!

Registration is not required. Children under 10 may not be left unattended.

YOU SCREAM, WE SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM: Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream is coming back to the Kimball Library on Wednesday, March 1st, at 6:00 PM for a tasty STEM event!

By demonstrating how liquid nitrogen can be used to freeze fresh ingredients into fresh ice cream, we keep the children amused, and give them a lesson on the properties of liquid nitrogen, gas laws, and the application of science to food. SubZero Nitrogen staff from Nashua, NH will be our teachers. Each registrant will receive ice cream at the end of the program. They bring a non-dairy option for those who may need it. Everything they bring is nut, gluten and egg free. There will be chocolate, vanilla, and bubble gum options. People get to choose which flavor they want.

The science behind this event is developmentally geared for youth in kindergarten and up and their parents or grandparents. Because this is a 'family' event, we ask that adults come accompanied by a child in kindergarten through high school.

This is paid for by the Library by the serving, so please only register if you can commit to coming. Registration is limited. Kimball card holders will have priority.

Kimball Library News 1/29/23

Join us as we ZOOM with Dan Hamamura, a Los Angeles-based TV writer who is currently a Writer/Producer on the CW’s Kung Fu on Wednesday, February 15^th, at 7:00 PM. He’s also written for TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles and Netflix’s The Ghost Bride. Dan will be going to go over writing tips, share examples of pages from scripts that he’s written versus how they ended up on the screen, and take questions. We are certain you will find Dan to be both funny and engaging.

BALANCING BEAR YOGA: Join Balancing Bear Yoga on Monday, February 27^th at 11:15 AM for a yoga class for you and your child. Discover the magic of yoga through games, music, movement, breathing, and more. All are welcome – moms, dads, or other caregivers! The class content is geared toward children ages 3 to 8. It is best to have a one-to-one adult/child ratio. NO experience is necessary for adult or child.

Please bring one yoga/exercise mat for you and your child to share or a beach towel. Dress comfortably. Water is also recommended.

The class will be led by Kelsey Iani, RYT 200.

LINDSAY & HER PUPPET PALS: Lindsay’s funny, fast-paced, and highly interactive variety show delights the young and the young at heart! Kids will meet several larger-than-life, hand-crafted puppets... Perhaps a goofy moose, a heroic tiger, or a lovable bear. Oh my! Maybe a dancing robot or flamingo, an adorable mouse, a stubborn goat, a shy dragon, or a singing dinosaur! Come find out who's making an appearance this time!

Lindsay has been performing full-time since 2011, presenting to several thousand children each year. Through animated storytelling and thoughtful messaging, she hopes to inspire creative play, resilience, and empathy in even the youngest. She also believes shared joy and laughter strengthen communities.

This program is a great fit for ages 3-8 and families. Registration is required. Join us on Monday, February 27^th at 6:00 PM.

TODDLER TIME: Need for more events for toddlers? We are here for you!

Did you know that play is extremely important for a child's development? Play improves the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and young people. Through play, children learn about the world and themselves. They also learn skills they need for study, work and relationships such as: confidence.

Drop into the Children's Room on Thursdays anytime from 11:30-1:30 and play with the stations we've set up for you. We'll have building toys, sensory bins and bags, and more! Adult supervision is necessary.

STAYCATION FILM: Because it’s Timberlane vacation week, the film club will be viewing a family friendly film on Tuesday, February 28^th at 1:00 PM. All ages are welcome.

Join us for Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile on the big screen in the meeting room. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Kimball Library offers a variety of ways to stay connected to our ever-changing world. We have news sources available both in-print and online. For magazines, we currently offer over 50 (physical) periodicals that you can check out from the Library and include some favorites such as Bon Appetit, Newsweek and Consumer Report. In 2023, we offer some new additions such as: Car & Driver, The Economist, Family Tree, House Beautiful, Outside, Rolling Stone, Runner’s World, Scientific American, and Wired. For a full listing of all our magazines visit our online catalog and scroll through the browse boxes at the top. There is one marked ‘Magazines’.

If you prefer a digital magazine format; we offer access to all sorts of titles on health & wellness, travel, news, craft & hobbies, cooking and more for you and the entire family 24/7 from Overdrive. Take a peek on the ‘Downloadable Books’ icon on our website.

In addition, we have an assortment of newspapers that we encourage you to come inside the Library to read. We have a cozy reading area to relax in while you read the Boston Globe, Manchester Union Leader, Lawrence Eagle Tribune and the Carriage Towne News.

New in 2023 is Newsbank Access World News. This very comprehensive database will give you news both locally and from around the world. Access is 24/7 and can be reached by using your Kimball Library barcode number. Click on the ‘Online Resources’ icon on our webpage and you’ll find that as well as the Wall Street Journal in digital format.

PRESCHOOL PLAYTIME: Why organize a gathering time to ‘just’ play? Play improves the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and young people. Through play, children learn about the world and themselves. They also learn skills they need for study, work and relationships such as: confidence.

Caregivers also need time to connect and form relationships with other adults who are caring for similar aged children. If a time is organized, we can be assured that the littles have someone to play with and the adults can visit.

Drop in on Mondays from 11-12. Building toys for toddlers will be out in the meeting room as well as our other toys in the Children’s Room such as coloring, Lego table, train table, kitchen set and more! Registration is not required.

CURIOUS KIDS: Drop in on Wednesday mornings between 10:15 and 11:45 in the Children’s Craft Barn so your ‘curious creatures’ can explore some sensory learning materials. Play will be monitored and guided by caregivers. The Library will set the stage for curious minds. Toddlers and preschool children are welcome with their caregivers and siblings. Come when you can, leave when you must!

Adult supervision is necessary. Librarians are available to guide and play, but caregivers must remain in the room. Registration is not required.

TELEVISION: THE ART & ETHICS OF MANIPULATION ~ NH HUMANITIES PROGRAM: John Gfroerer explores the power of television as a communication medium and the ethical implications of manipulating the viewer by means of the choices made behind the camera through the final editing process. By examining the artistic techniques used to persuade, induce, and entice us, Gfroerer considers the extent to which television teaches or simply tantalizes us. Are ethical boundaries crossed by the use of these techniques, and to what extent as media consumers should we care?

About the presenter: John Gfroerer is a documentary producer and owner a video production company based at the in Concord. He has produced over 40 documentaries, ranging from profiles of towns along the Maine Coast to a history of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary. Gfroerer's work has been aired on public television stations, The History Channel, and many other venues. He is also director of the Concord Historical Society.

Kimball Library News 1/15/23

Mah Jongg is a popular game and Kimball Library is quite a popular place to play it! We play from 1:00-4:30 on Fridays. Mah Jongg, a fun rummy-like game, is played with tiles rather than cards. There are many different versions of Mah Jongg all around the world. We play American Mah Jongg and follow the rules as defined by the National Mah Jongg league. One of the main differences is that American Mah Jongg uses an annual card of Official Standard Hands and Rules, against which all games are played. These cards are available from the National Mah Jongg League, and you will need to bring yours along to use while playing. Experienced players only, please!

Registration is required. Registrants will receive a response from Betty Jarzobski, the Mah Jongg organizer.

SATURDAY STEAM: Join us for an easy-going STEAM program for kids grades K-3.

We will meet on the second Saturday of each month and work on a project using common items and have some fun challenges using whatever we have created for the day. Register ASAP as the class tends to fill quickly.

In February we will meet on the 11^th at 10:30 am to have Valentine STEAM themed fun!

BOBCATS: Have you ever seen a bobcat in Atkinson in real time or on local social media? Did you know there are bobcats in Atkinson? Do you want to know more about these remarkable animals?

If so, come join us as a New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife Steward shares information about bobcats in the state. Learn about the natural history of the elusive cat, its habitat needs and the status of the population. Also, hear about the amazing federal funding mechanism that supports long-term research and is largely responsible for our country’s abundant wildlife.

This event is free and open to the public. Please register to join us on Monday, February 13^th at 6:00 PM.

NEEDLE CRAFTERS: Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great place to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This friendly bunch meets on Wednesdays between 10:30 and 12:30. Come when you can, and leave when you must.

DOWNLOADABLE BOOKS UPDATE: In early 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, our newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines. Both apps offer identical titles. Libby has features the older app doesn’t.

If you’d like to try a different selection of ebooks and audiobooks and a different experience, you can download hoopla and receive 4 titles per month. The choice is yours and you can do it all!

Tuesday, January 31 @ 1 PM – Till: Till is the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was brutally lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. In Mamie’s poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.

Tuesday, February 14 @ 1 PM – The Good House: Life for New England realtor Hildy Good begins to unravel when she hooks up with an old flame of hers from New York. The film is based on Ann Leary's The Good House. It is starring Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline.

Jessica thinks her life is over when she loses a leg in a car accident. She's not comforted by the news that she'll be able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg. Who cares about walking when you live to run?

As she struggles to cope with crutches and a first cyborg-like prosthetic, Jessica feels oddly both in the spotlight and invisible. People who don't know what to say, act like she's not there. She could handle it better if she weren't now keenly aware that she'd done the same thing herself to a girl with Cerebral Palsy named Rosa.

With the support of family, friends, a coach, and her track teammates, Jessica may actually be able to run again. But that's not enough for her now. She doesn't just want to cross finish lines herself—she wants to take Rosa with her.

STONO REBELLION (NH HUMANITIES): The Stono Rebellion has been called the most important slave revolt in North American history. In this lecture, Damian Costello examines the events and deep African roots of the 1739 uprising in South Carolina. Recent arrivals from the Kingdom of Kongo drew on drumming traditions, military organization, and Kongolese spirituality to communicate their message of freedom. The high point of the revolt was a ceremonial dance which fused African precedents and enacted the rebels' call of liberty. Costello will also discuss how the Kongolese message of liberty can inform present-day efforts to overcome the lingering effects of our colonial inheritance.

About the Presenter: Damian Costello received his Ph.D. in theological studies from the University of Dayton and specializes in the intersection of Catholic theology, Indigenous spiritual traditions, and colonial history. He is an international expert on the life and legacy of Nicholas Black Elk and the author of Black Elk: Colonialism and Lakota Catholicism.

Kimball Library News 1/1/23

SATURDAY STEAM: Join us for an easy-going STEAM program for kids grades K-3.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month and work on a project using common items and have some fun challenges using whatever we have created for the day.

This month on January 14^th at 10:30 AM, we will be making structures out of sugar cubes. Register soon! STEAM can fill up quickly, so take a peek ahead for February and get on the STEAM bandwagon!

MUSIC COLLECTION: Music streaming is now the dominant way people enjoy music in the United States. Use of the library’s physical CD collection became so low, we decided to rearrange that area to improve browsing and enlarge our popular large print collection. You can find the music CDs for sale on the Friends of the Library Book Sale Shelves.

The Library offers a free music streaming service with the Hoopla App via your Kimball Library card. With thousands of titles available for streaming, hoopla has something for everyone. Lullabies and sing-a-longs for little listeners, trending tunes for teens, and hit music adults love – all available 24/7 without fees, commercials or wait lists. The hoopla app also allows you to shuffle or repeat songs to create a more personalized listening experience.

If you would like a personal lesson in how to stream music, please call and we will be happy to arrange a brief, tech appointment with library staff.

KINDERGARTEN CLUB: Join us on Mondays at 3:30 PM for Kindergarten Club! Just like a typical storytime, we will read a couple of books, but we will also play games that will build on important skills such as listening and vocabulary and even have an experiment or two. Register to be a part of our new winter session.

Children may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the Library if parents make arrangements with pick-up patrol. (The Library is not taking responsibility for the transportation; we are simply letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack a snack for your child to have before 3:30.

Parents MUST let the Library know of any changes to the drop off/pick up routine OR if their child is not able to attend on a particular day.

WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE: Log into our catalog with your patron barcode ID and password to access the link. Log into your existing WSJ account or create a new one if you don’t already have one.

You’ll have access for 3 days, at the end of which simply repeat step one.

Please note: The Wall Street Journal apps do not work for library users, but the web version works very well with small screen devices.
