T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Wednesday, March 6th @ 6 PM
The book of the month is The Cat I Never Named: A True Story of Love, War, and Survival by Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. This is a story of unwavering determination, friendships and first love, amid the brutality of war, and a cat that was at the heart of it all.
We invite middle and high school students to join us for a chat about this book! Copies are available if you need them at the main circulation desk. Register yourself and your friends for fun conversation and candy.
BLACK BEARS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE: Thursday, March 7th at 6 PM
Although black bears are generally shy and usually avoid humans, they are opportunistic and will search for human food supplies when natural foods are not available. Maintaining a sustainable bear population in New Hampshire depends on minimizing human-bear conflicts. Join us to learn about the natural history of the black bear, current research taking place and how the information learned will affect management of the black bear population. The presentation will discuss a brief history of wildlife in NH, and the Wildlife & Sport Fish Restoration Program.
Bryan Rome is a volunteer Wildlife Steward for NH Fish & Game. Bryan provides educational talks about the state’s wildlife, how people interact with wildlife and how to conserve our natural species. In his personal life, he is an avid outdoors-man who studied Wilderness Leadership in college.
This event is sponsored by the Atkinson Conservation Commission as part of their 50th celebration and hosted at the Kimball Library. Registration is required.

Kimball Library News 1/21/24
Subzero Nitrogen is back!
By demonstrating how liquid nitrogen can be used to freeze fresh ingredients into fresh ice cream, we keep the children amused and give them a lesson on the properties of liquid nitrogen, gas laws, and the application of science to food. SubZero Nitrogen staff from Nashua, NH will be our teachers. Each registrant will receive ice cream at the end of the program. They bring a non-dairy option for those who may need it. Everything they bring is nut, gluten and egg free. They bring chocolate, vanilla and bubble gum options. People get to choose which flavor they want!
The science behind this event is for youth in kindergarten and up and their parents or grandparents. Because this is a 'family' event, we ask that adults come accompanied by a child in kindergarten through high school.
Register to join us on Wednesday, February 28th at 6:00 PM. This delicious event is sponsored by our generous Friends of the Kimball Library.
ROBERT FROST ON THE FARM: NEW HAMPSHIRE FARMING IN 1900: Robert Frost’s poetry can help us appreciate the rigor of life on a New England farm in the early 20th century. In an exploration of both New Hampshire history and Frost’s poetry, author and poet Jeffrey Zygmont recites a selection of Frost’s poems about farming. He provides background on Frost’s life, offering insight into the poem’s origins, and commentary on the work’s artistic beauty, as well as the experiences and emotions it expresses. Participants will join a lively discussion celebrating Robert Frost’s unique gift for capturing farm life in poetry.
Jeffrey Zygmont is a New Hampshire writer and poet who has published numerous fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories, and children’s books. As a journalist, he has published articles in a long list of magazines and newspapers. He speaks regularly about poetry and art – especially to promote the works of poets Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Frost at venues around New England.
This event takes place on Thursday, February 29th at 6:00 PM and is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities, sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society and hosted by the Kimball Library. Tougias captivates the audience by chronicling harrowing survival stories and discusses the lessons learned. Tougias has interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds, and researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. He supplements their stories with a handful of first-person accounts from some of the toughest survivors in history, including mountain climbers to early explorers of the new world. Kimball Library News 1/7/24
The Road Not Taken, a fine art exhibit inspired by the poetry of Robert Frost, comes to the Kimball Library in Atkinson during January and February 2024.
The presentation, designed by three Derry artists, Ingeborg V. Seaboyer,
Judy Krassowski and Corinne Dodge, features approximately 30 works that reflect
a variety of personal interpretations of the most famous as well as some of the
“less traveled” works of one of America’s most inspiring poets, Robert Frost. Images
in pen and ink, watercolor, acrylics and oils are accompanied by a selected
verse that inspired each individual work
Since 2011, the exhibit has been touring libraries and community venues in
southern New Hampshire with a goal of reaching all of the public libraries in
the state.
JANUARY JAM: Families with
children ages 5 to 10 are invited to join us for another night of family fun on
Wednesday, January 24th starting at 6 PM. Registration is required.
STEAM stations will be set up in the craft barn, stories will be shared, and
group games will be played in the Meeting Room. All activities are geared for
elementary age children and parents young at heart.

Orla began visiting us in the Library in the fall of 2023 and she was so excited with all the readers that she and Kate are coming back in the New Year in January! This is such a great opportunity for children to practice reading aloud with a sweet furry face listening and no corrections!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A WILDLIFE
REHABILITOR: Have you ever wondered what happens to a wild animal when they’re injured or orphaned? Join us for a presentation with the Millstone Wildlife Center and hear about their mission and insights into the field of rehabilitation services. Learn about their approach in the care of the more than 1,200 animals that are brought to their facility for help each year! The center will bring three ambassador animals with them. While this presentation is geared toward adults and children older than 12 years of age, everyone is welcome. Registration is limited and the Center requests that attendees stay calm and quiet during the presentation so not to cause extra stress to the ambassador animals. Join us on Thursday, February 1st at 6 PM for a great program.

This is such a great opportunity for children to practice reading aloud with a sweet furry face listening and no corrections!

WALKING IN THE WOODS WITH ROBERT FROST: Robert Frost’s poetry makes spoken words sparkle and sing. It also gives us an intimate look at nature in New Hampshire. In celebration of both Robert Frost and the natural world around us, author and poet Jeffrey Zygmont will recite a selection of Frost’s nature poems, emphasize their beauty, explain their significance and describe how they deepen our understanding and appreciation of New Hampshire’s natural environment. The selection will include some of Robert Frost’s best-known poems, and others that equally express admiration for nature. Recited from memory, each poem is accompanied by commentary about the experiences and emotions it conveys, plus background on Frost that gives us insight into the poem’s origin and meaning. The program includes a summary of Frost’s life. This lively discussion and recital of some of Robert Frost’s best poems is a celebration of both New England nature and Robert Frost’s unique gift for capturing it in verse. You won’t want to miss out joining us on Thursday, January 25th at 6 PM. Registration is required.
Jeffrey Zygmont is a New Hampshire writer and poet who has published numerous fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories, and children’s books. As a journalist, he has published articles in a long list of magazines and newspapers. He speaks regularly about poetry and art – especially to promote the works of poets Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Frost – at venues around New England.

New Year, new YOU! Maybe it’s time to consider those things you’ve been putting off and join in 2024. Take a look at some weekly adult programs that you can be a part of.
WEEKLY WINTER ADULT PROGRAMS:
BRING YOUR OWN CRAFT, PAINT & COLOR (Mondays): Come unwind, de-stress and create between 12:30 and 2:30 PM. Adults come together to dabble in painting, coloring or creative crafts using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil. Folks are required to bring their own supplies to work on their canvas, wood, sketchpads and coloring books. Bring whatever project you are working on. Group size will be limited, and registration is required.
Research shows that creative activities help you relax. This is an open time so feel free to stay the entire two hours, leave early or come late. Remember, this is a no stress event so if you only have half an hour to spare then spend it relaxing with fellow creative art enthusiasts.
ITALIAN CONVERSATIONS (Tuesdays): This adult study group focuses on practicing speaking Italian by helping each other through shared resources, various activities and games. If you are fluent or are learning the language with a basic understanding of Italian vocab, grammar and verb conjugations (present tense), please come join us to exercise your Italian the fun way from 6:00 to 7:45 PM.
NEEDLE CRAFTERS (Wednesdays): Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday between 10:00 AM and noon, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great way to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This weekly meet and greet group enjoys conversation and laughs while stitching away. Please bring your own materials.
Room size capacity is limited so registration is required. We may be unable to accommodate walk-in participants. Please use the online calendar or call to get on the list.
COMMUNITY KNITTERS (Thursdays): Join this caring group who knits and donates all their items to charity. They are always welcoming new folks who are like-minded. They gather and knit from 10:00 AM and noon.

BUBBLY BABIES: Let us entertain you and your little ones with stories, finger plays, baby bounces and BUBBLES! That’s right, we’ll have the bubble machine going for this storytime on Saturday, January 13th at 10:30 AM. This is a great opportunity for working families to try a storytime program. Join us for some exceptional bonding time as well as a chance to connect with others in your community. Start your child’s life long love of libraries and reading!
This is a drop in program so no registration is necessary. Older siblings are welcome as long as they participate and don’t disrupt the class.
