Kimball Library News 5/8/17

ZUMBA FAMILY FITNESS FUN: The internet world was abuzz around our video of preschool to teenagers dancing and jumping along to the music at our last ZUMBA event. If you missed it, you will be impressed with the moves of our patrons. Check it out on our facebook page. ZUMBA Fitness for Kids incorporates fitness skills into repetitive dance moves anyone can follow along with. Kids ages 4 to 14 will enjoy the interactive games interspersed throughout the hour of dancing. We meet Friday night once a month. The next ZUMBA night will be on June 2^nd at 5:00 PM.

Join the party and get a work out in, too!

ACOUSTIC TRUFFLE CONCERT IN THE COURTYARD: Back by popular demand, join us for an evening of music with Acoustic Truffle starting at 6:30pm on Thursday, June 8th. This trio have been creating music together since 1986 and have achieved widespread popularity by headlining many respected venues as well as sharing the stage with international acts as Little Feat, Phish, The Band, Dave Matthew's Band, David Lindley, and Blues Traveler to name only a few. The trio's groove-driven acoustic style has a sound all its own. With elements of soul, bluegrass, R&B, and world beat, they bring a well-rounded set of 'music-Americana' to the stage. Their love of acoustic music, and a different set list and approach from their electric shows, creates truly unique listening experience.

Bring a blanket, lawn chair and enjoy the music! This magical music event is sponsored by The Friends of the Kimball Library. In the event of inclement weather, we will be move indoors.

PEPPA PIG PARTY: Do you LOVE Peppa Pig? Join us for a viewing of ‘Peppa Pig Muddy Puddles’ (8 Episodes of Peppa Pig). Bring a snack you can pork out on and a drink will be provided. Do a pink piggy craft while you watch Peppa, George, Mummy and Daddy Pig have fun together!

Oink! This pig happy event will take place on Saturday, June 10^th, at 11am. Register all ages and invite your friends and neighbors.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND CLOSING: Please note that we are closed Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 27^th through Monday, May 29th. This means that 2 day loans taken on Thursday will not be due until Tuesday. HUZZAH! Stock up accordingly. (Please forgive prior articles saying Memorial Day weekend was May 20-22. That is BOOKSALE WEEKEND.)

Kimball Library News 5/1/17

We have an exciting new raffle going on at the library and tickets may be purchased at the main circulation desk. Enter this raffle to win two Red Sox tickets and a limited edition poster signed by David Ortiz and artist, Peter Max! Winners get to go see the Boston Red Sox play the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. These tickets are for the game on Wednesday, September 6^th, 2017. The seats are awesome and located behind 3^rd base in Field Box 57, Row B, Seats 3-4.

Tickets may be purchased by cash or check (made out to The Friends of Kimball Library) and cost $5 each or 3 for $10. Your purchase will support a great cause because all proceeds go towards adult and children's programs at the Kimball Library! Hurry on over and buy often. The winner will be drawn on Monday, June 5^th. You need not be present to win.

Please note that the tickets were generously donated by Ted and Beth Vitas of Atkinson. We are humbled and appreciative.

BOOK SALE: Speaking of a great way to put your money to a good use for yourself and the library, we invite you to shop at our bigger-than-ever book sale going on in conjunction with the Town-wide Yard Sale on May 20^th starting at 8:00 AM.

Our book sale will include hard cover and paperback books, DVDs, music CDs, and miscellaneous puzzles and games. Our prices range from $ .10 to 2.00 for the regular stock. Some “special” books are priced individually. There will be a “Bag Day” on Monday, May 22nd. Remaining stock will be sold in either $3.00 or $5.00 bags – as much as you can fit! Don’t miss out!

CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD SERIES: We are kicking off the concerts in the Kimball Courtyard in May, and first on the docket is on Thursday, May 25^th, at 6pm featuring harmonica and guitar duo, Baza.

Baza celebrates the tradition of the playing the blues of the 1920s through the 1940s. They perform the music of early blues artists from the rich fertile region of the Mississippi Delta to the low rolling hills of the East Coast Piedmont. They play with deep respect, affection and authenticity, in a style that has been described as “gritty and soulful”.

Baza is composed of Doug Philbrook on guitar, vocals and foot percussion and Geof “Goody” Goodell on harmonica and vocals. Doug’s conversion to the blues was cemented through the recordings of Delta blues icon Robert Johnson. His playing on National Steel resonator guitars employs a variety of blues tunings, picking and bottleneck styles. His vocals are emotive and evocative of the classic blues howlers.

Geof’s blues journey began with the music John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and harmonica stylist,Paul Butterfield. Geof’s playing is melodic, rhythmic and uplifting. His solo voice is passionate and vocal harmonies “spot on.”

Together they play songs of hard living, love, loss and celebration. They create a picture of the blues through the songs and stories of its pioneers and the times they lived. Their stage performances are informative, insightful, educational, musical and fun. Their audiences leave satisfied and blues converts.

Bring your lawn chair or spread out a blanket and enjoy a delightful evening of music as part of our Concerts in the Courtyard – 2017 Summer Concert Series!

YOUTH PROGRAMING: As our school year winds down, we’re coming up on the last few weeks of story time programs, book discussions, knit a bit, and STEAM classes like Creative Words and Girls Who Code. Check out our calendar and make sure to catch our regular programs while you can!

Kimball Library News 4/24/17

Join Ms. Michelle for a ZUMBA party on Friday night, May 12^th, at 5:00pm.

Zumba®Kids classes feature kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba® choreography. Learn easy steps, play games, and explore language and cultural elements exposed in the music. Hear songs you know such as 'Get Back Up Again” from Trolls as well as songs that feature languages and rhythms from around the world.

ZUMBA helps develop a healthy lifestyle and incorporates fitness as a natural part of children's lives by making fitness fun.

Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in and bring water to drink. Be prepared to move a lot and get a great workout! This event is for ages 4-14, but parents of youth in the class are welcome to move along with us.

HIKING: This year will be the 250th Anniversary of Atkinson and so we thought it was fitting to celebrate what is on our own conservation land. Join us as Kevin Martin, author of Big Trees of New Hampshire, takes us on a hiking adventure to the Big Ash Tree on the Sawyer Conservation land in Atkinson. Assisting Kevin on the walk will be Pete McVay, who is a member of Atkinson’s Conservation Commission, a NH Audubon volunteer, and a graduate of UNH’s ‘COVERTS” Volunteer Wildlife Program.

We will meet up at Sawyer Conservation land on Saturday, May 6^th, at 10:00 AM. The access point to the trailhead is off of Sawyer Avenue, just off Main Street. The gated fire lane by the dog walk trail will be open that day to accommodate cars and there is some limited parking on Sawyer Avenue as well. We also encourage folks to car pool.

Registration is required. We don’t want to start hiking without you, so please let us know that you plan to attend. *We love our furry friends but we ask that you do not bring your dog the day of the hike. Thank you!

NEW ENGLAND LIGHTHOUSES (ATKINSON HISTORICAL SOCIETY): Everyone knows that there is 'something about lighthouses' that gives them broad appeal, but their vital role in our history and culture is little appreciated. Our early nation was built on maritime economy, and lighthouses were an essential part of the system. Due to automation, traditional lighthouse keeping is a way of life that has faded into the past. Jeremy D'Entremont tells the history of New England's historic and picturesque lighthouses primarily focusing on the colorful and dramatic stories of lighthouse keepers and their families.

About the presenter: Jeremy D'Entremont has written more than a dozen books and 300 articles on lighthouse history and other maritime topics. He is the official historian of the American Lighthouse Foundation and the founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. D'Entremont has lectured and narrated cruises from Maine to California, and his photographs have appeared in many books and magazines. He is also the Editor of the website 'New England Lighthouses: A Virtual Guide' at www.newenglandlighthouses.net. He emphasizes the rich human history of lighthouse keepers and their families in his presentations.

Free and open to the public, this program is possible through the New Hampshire Humanities. Join us on May 11^th at 6:30pm.
