Kimball Library News 10/2/17

They are hot!  They are Hotspots!  You may not know that we currently own two that are available for lending.

The Wi-Fi Hotspot is about the size of a deck of cards and can link up to 15 devices to the internet at the same time. The Wi-Fi Hotspot is portable and simple to use.

The Hotspot connects to T-Mobile’s cellular network. By connecting your phone, tablet, or other wireless-enabled device to it, you can get online anywhere within T-Mobile’s coverage area – try it at home, or wherever you're going!

· The Hotspot may be borrowed only by Kimball Library cardholders in good standing.
· The Hotspot may be borrowed for a 1-week period. Overdue fines are $5 per day.
· The borrower is responsible for any loss or damage to the Hotspot. Replacement costs is $100. The charging components are $20.

If you are curious you should try them out at home so you can be prepared the next time you go on vacation or lose your internet connection.  Your kids will LOVE that they can use their iPads, Chromebooks, and surf or watch movies when traveling in the car.  Come on by and tech it out!

STEM BUILDING:  Explore our STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) building toys and expand your critical thinking skills. This time period 11-2 is available for ages 3-6 on both Thursday, October 19th and 26th.

We’ll have brain flakes, marble runs, magnetic tiles, or a combination of the three available for free play.

Please note, children under 4 years old MUST BE SUPERVISED at all times when marbles are in use. Children under 4 will not be permitted in the room without an adult. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe!

Almost four hundred years ago, an unknown court mathematician in Italy opened a book and laid the foundation for modern science. Galileo Galilei turned his telescope to the heavens to discover mountains and craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, and countless stars never before seen. Even more significant was his method of observation and mathematical analysis. He taught future scientists the way to discover the laws of nature.

Join us for the living history presentation (October 19th at 6:30pm), ‘Galileo Galilei the Starry Messenger’, which is a dramatic fun filled adaptation of Galileo's short treatise 'Siderius Nuncius”. Galileo (dressed in 17th century costume) arrives to present a lecture on his most recent discoveries made using his newly devised spyglass. As he describes those discoveries, Galileo's new method of observation and measurement of nature become apparent.  After the lecture Galileo invites his audience to ask questions about his life, times and experiments.

About the presenter:  Mike Francis brings astronomy to life with his Stars Science Theater programs.  A Physical Science and Physics teacher and formerly a lecturer for ten years at the Charles Hayden Planetarium at Boston's Museum of Science, Mike combines the science of astronomy with the dramatic skills of an actor. Whether portraying Galileo, building a solar system as the Stargazer's Apprentice or narrating a tour of the current night sky in his Starlab traveling planetarium, Mike shares his love of the heavens with schools, libraries, museums and special events across the country.

This program is free and open to the public and is made possible through a grant from the NH Humanities. Please register to let us know that you are coming and so that you may receive a friendly reminder.

WEEKLY ADULT PROGRAMS: We host several different recurring events for adults who have a particular interest or want to learn.  Register for Mah Jong on Mondays at 1pm or Needle Crafters on Wednesdays at 10:30am.

Mah Jong is a fun, rummy-like game played with tiles rather than cards. We will teach anyone who wants to learn when 4 newbies indicate interest.  It does require some strategy as well as luck to play. A small amount of time and effort is needed to become familiar with the principles and rules of the game.

Needle Crafters sessions are for those who enjoy knitting, crocheting, embroidery, quilting or other forms of needle work. Please bring your own supplies.  This in an informal gathering to finish those projects started or perhaps get some ideas for beginning some new ones.  We'll cozy up in the Atkinson Room of the library, share some laughs, drop a stitch or two, and make some new friends.
All experience levels and ages welcome.  Those more experienced will teach and guide novices. You do not need to be an Atkinson resident - All are invited!
