Kimball Library News 12/17/18

Join us for an afternoon of cinema entertainment! Bring a blanket for comfort if you like or dress in your pajamas! Free popcorn will be served, but you are welcome to bring other movie snacks for yourself. Mark your calendar for Thursday, December 27th, at 3 PM.  All registered guests from any towns are welcome.

In the heartwarming live action adventure 'Disney's Christopher Robin,' the young boy who loved embarking on adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with a band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside.

MUSEUM PASSES: Think ahead regarding winter break or free weekends and make sure you seize the opportunity to put a museum pass on hold to use.  Kimball Library offers the Currier Museum of Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Museum of Science, New England Aquarium, Peabody Essex Museum, Strawbery Banke, USS Constitution, Zoo New England, and MORE.   Look at the schedule with your family now and decide where to visit soon.

Check out the special exhibits that each museum has to offer.  The Museum of Science for example has a new season exhibition called Trains for the Holidays.  There is interactive experiences designed for all ages including model trains (G, O, and HO scales), expert model train makers and films such as The Polar Express in 4-D. This special exhibit runs now until January 6th.

Did you know Kimball Library patrons can check out museum passes from the Plaistow and Sandown public libraries?  However, patrons cannot reserve museum passes from these libraries ahead of time.  Kimball Library patrons can pick-up passes in-person from the libraries in Plaistow and Sandown in the last hour before closing on the day before intended use.  Visit our partner libraries' websites and call them to see which passes they have available.

TECH THIS OUT: Tech THIS out!  If you have an e-reader or gadget that you want to learn how to use with free downloadable books, then we can help you.  You can have a brief lesson here called “Turn it On!” on your tech toy (Kindle, iPad, iPod, cell phone or other device compatible with Overdrive/Libby App) and learn how to put a free library e-book on it.  This is a basic tutorial for newbies.

Are you looking for some place to get help and to learn more about your device(s)? Get troubleshooting assistance, learn how to use your device(s), and discover the latest library apps, news, and online services!

Please register for an appointment.   Ask for Kathy Watson (tech toy technician) at (603) 362-5234.  (These tutorials are for resident card holders in good standing only, please.)

Brief tutorials are also available for basic computer instructions such as setting up email, social media, etc.  When you register for a lesson please indicate your need.  If you can’t find a slot that suits you then email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com and Kathy will attempt to give you a unique appointment time.

FAMILY ZUMBA (Ages 4 to 104): Jump and jingle and work out some of those holiday calories on Friday, December 28th at 5L30 PM. Join us for a fun and vigorous workout to music you love! Get exposed to dance moves from around the world in repetitious formats that are easy to follow. If you aren't sure- just move your feet to the beat!

Bring your family members, kids ages 4 and up and adults too to join the ultimate dancing party. Get healthy and strong together and have fun doing it!

Please wear clothing you can move in and supportive footwear. Bring a bottle of water and expect to sweat and have fun!

STEM TOYS AND BEYOND: Join us for some time exploring with our STEM building toys. Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our magnetic tiles, brain flakes and marble runs.
Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects (marbles) as potential choking hazards.  Drop in anytime between 11 and 1 on Thursday, January 3rd to enjoy these STEM toys!  Please register so we will know how many to expect.

Did you know that many STEAM opportunities exist at the library?  Beyond STEAM toy sessions, we have classes currently being offered such as Girls Who Code (grades 5 & up), Discovering STEAM (ages 3-6), and Snap Circuits Lab (grades 2-5).  Examples of past activities include building structures, designing car seat belts, learning about innovative women who code, Crazy Eights Math Club, building simple robots, working with Python and Scratch, live animal shows,  exploring the chemistry of chocolate, balloon science, and much more!  Keep a lookout for repeats of some of these as well as new ones coming down the pike.

We also have electronics for use such as iPads with education apps, digital cameras and ukuleles to check out, and our AWED computer station loaded with education games just for kids.

Recurring STEM toy sessions include using KEVA planks, Magformers, Brainflakes, Legos, and Marble Runs.  We like to boast that we are enhancing Atkinson’s future architects, engineers, builders, and designers through cutting edge educational programs.

Recently we participated in STEAMING around the World at the Timberlane Regional Middle School with youth ages K and up.  People love rediscovering the library and the ways we can bring STEAM into their children’s lives.  Keep us with us on our website to sign up the youth in your life for STEAM adventures.

HOLIDAY HOURS: Please note we are open December 31 (New Year’s Eve) from 10-3, and we are closed January 1, 2019 for New Year’s Day.  We are thankful and excited to ringing in another new year with all our fabulous patrons!
