Join us on Tuesday, April 20^th, at 6:30pm for ‘Meet Lucy Stone: Enter the Antebellum World of the Abolition and Women's Rights Movements’. There was a time in our national history when a married woman did not have legal rights to the money she earned, the property she inherited, or the children she bore.  During this same era citizens of the United States thought it a legal and rational pursuit to buy and trade human beings.  Lucy Stone, born in Brookfield Massachusetts 1818, decided it was time for this nation to demonstrate the democracy it preached. Crisscrossing the country, she spoke eloquently and passionately about the most important issues of her time. 

In this first-person interpretive program, Judith Black introduces American Lucy Stone, the first woman hired by the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society as a public speaker and the 'Shining Star' of the Abolition and Women’s Rights Movements. The presenter dispels well-worn platitudes about the antebellum North by interjecting historic and personal truths about these social reform movements. Her presentation also paints a dynamic and detailed picture of what it takes to change the world you are born into. Follow Lucy as she makes her case for tax resistance, her challenges to marriage laws and motherhood, and her pro-Emancipation response to the Civil War. Go with her to The American Equal Rights Association Convention in May 1869, where she eloquently supports the 15th Amendment, which gave African-American men the right to vote.

This program is free and open to the public and is made possible through a grant from the NH Humanities.  Please register to let us know that you are coming and so that you may receive a friendly reminder.

APRIL VACATION WEEK EVENTS CONTINUED:
Register for ‘Mr. Recycle Head Man’ on Monday, April 24^th, at 6:30pm for youth in grades K-5.  This craft is perfect for your desk or favorite shelf, and it’s fun to make using your own ideas! All you need to do is bring a can with the top removed. We'll do the rest right here. 

On Tuesday, we will host a ‘Daffodil Craft’ between 10:30am and 12:30pm for ages 2+ to grade 3.  April Showers bring the flowers but we can make our own with no soggy buds, just pretty posies! Join in the fun and go home with a beautiful flower for your room or kitchen table! Parents are welcome to help their children. You may come anytime to do your project between 10:30am and 12:30pm, but please register in advance so we’ll have enough supplies.

LIBRARY BUDDIES FINALE: For the kids and teens who are participating in Library Buddies, our final meeting date is on April 19^th from 4-5pm.  Participants are welcome to bring a non-messy finger food to share with the group as we wrap up our time with a little party.  Notices will go home to everyone, but this way you can start planning now.  If your child has a dietary restriction we’d appreciate your donation in particular keeping that in mind.  We have roughly 30+ participants in all.

Join us as Maria Noel Groves, clinical herbalist & author of Body into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self Care presents ‘Growing Health’ on Tuesday, April 11^th, at 6:30pm.

Feel empowered to grow and make herbal medicine from the garden! Learn Maria’s top 10 easy-to-grow medicinal herbs for the New England garden and how to use them to keep your family healthy and well. We will discuss growing tips, remedy making, safety, and how to address specific health concerns.

Registration is required to attend this program and seating is limited.  Open to Atkinson residents first (sign up ASAP!) Non-residents may sign up starting Thursday, April 6th. This program is sponsored by the wonderful Friends of the Kimball Library.

APRIL MOVIES: April 11—Hidden Figures, April 18—Lion, April 25—La La Land.  All movies start at 1pm promptly.  Arrive early for the best seats.  Popcorn will be served.  

PRESCHOOL EVENTS: FYI, all preschool activities are going strong until mid June. The exception is April vacation week and holiday closings.  It’s not too late to join Bitty Books, Creative Words, Mother Goose on the Loose, or Kiddie Lit.

 

STAY TUNED FOR APRIL VACATION WEEK EVENTS: But, first up to mention is another round of ‘Travel Musically Around the World, on Monday, April 24^th for infants through age 6 at 10:30am.  We had so much fun exploring multiple languages through song, rhythm, and rhyme during February school vacation we wanted to try it again! Feel free to sing along to the words of commonly known songs such as 'Frere Jacque', sing along to songs you learned the last time, and learn some new words and phrases you've never heard or spoken before as well. Be ready to get up and clap your hands or move your feet to the beat.

Kimball Library News 3/20/17

Join us for an inspiring evening of designing beautiful and abundant, edible landscapes on Wednesday, April 5^th, from 6-8:00pm with Ben Barken.  Ben is the Owner and Founder, Lead Designer and Consultant at HomeHarvest - Edible Landscapes LLC.

Inspired by working on more than 30 organic farms in New England, California Oregon, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia, Ben founded HomeHarvest in 2008.  Ben earned a degree in sustainable agriculture, is permaculture-design certified, and started HomeHarvest with just a bicycle and shovel.  HomeHarvest, based out of Arlington and Lexington, MA, now has several company trucks, seven full time employees, and over 500 edible gardens installed throughout Boston and its suburbs.

Let Ben help you start growing a beautiful and healthy garden!

SILLY SCAVENGER HUNT: It’s April Fool’s Day, so we are calling all kids to come try out our silly scavenger hunt anytime between the hours of 11am and 1pm on Saturday, April 1^st.  Are you good at riddles?  Are you a super sleuth?  Do you like kooky and zany?  No need to register, just come in and try your luck and have a joke.  Wear your clothes backwards or solve the clues for a silly surprise.  Happy April Fool’s Day from us at Kimball Library!
