Kimball Library News 5/6/19
The countdown has started for the beginning of ‘A Universe of Stories’ Summer Reading Adventure… Starting June 5th, we will be accepting sign-ups for our program which includes raffles, sticker collections for every visit in which you check out materials, and access to all of our summer reading programs and events. Children entering grades K-5 in the fall are invited to register at the children’s desk and kids entering middle school through high school grades can register for their own mature version of events and programs at the main circulation desk. Both sets of youth can enter to win prizes from June 5th to August 15th such as tickets to the movies, local trampoline parks, amusements parks, sporting events, gift cards to ice cream and donut shops and more just by visiting the library and checking out materials. Don’t let the summer academic sludge impact you. Start the summer habit early and we’ll take your reading, STEAM and learning goals to the moon and beyond!
TEN HOURS UNTIL DAWN: During the height of the Blizzard of 1978 the pilot boat ‘Can Do’ set out from Gloucester with five men onboard to assist a lost Coast Guard boat and an oil tanker that was in a Mayday situation. Ten Hours Until Dawn tells the story of what happened on that awful night when the seas were producing monstrous waves of 40 feet and the wind was screaming at 100 miles per hour. Using photo slides of the boats, the men involved, and ferocious moments of the storm, Michael Tougias will take the viewer through this incredible night where many lives hung in the balance. With the aid of maps, Tougias lets the audience see the progression and location of these boats off the Massachusetts coast, and explains what happened and why.
This event is free and open to the public. Please help us plan accordingly by registering and join us on Wednesday, June 5, from 6:30-8:00 PM. This program is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and sponsored by Atkinson Recreation. For more information on New Hampshire Humanities visit www.nhhumanities.org.
About the presenter: A graduate of St. Michael's College, Michael Tougias is a lecturer and award-winning author of 20 non-fiction books published by Simon and Schuster. Several of his books focus on true survival stories including The Finest Hours: The 1 Story of The Coast Guard's Most Daring Rescue (now a major motion picture by Disney), Fatal Forecast, and Overboard! His book, Ten Hours Until Dawn: The 1 Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do in the Blizzard of 78, was selected by the American Library Association as one of the 'Top Books of the Year' and described as 'a white-knuckle read, the best book of its kind.'
OUTTA THIS WORLD STITCH FOR TOTS: T/weens are invited to give back to the less fortunate this summer every Monday starting June 17th by knitting and crocheting with us. Projects to give away may include bunnies knit from squares, hats, sweaters, booties, or squares to contribute to baby blankets. If you already know how to knit or crochet, bring your needles and yarn. If you are new to the craft, come empty-handed so we can tell you what to bring next time and how to get started. Come every Monday between 3 and 4:30 or drop by on the occasional weeks you are available. You’ve built up those finger muscles with your texting, put them to good use and have fun with us as well!

GLOBAL BANJAR: International Voices in Antebellum Banjo Music (NH Humanities)— The Hardtacks (Marek Bennett and Woody Pringle) deliver an engaging overview of global politics prior to the American Civil War through the lens of early banjo music. Between 1820 and 1860, the banjo transformed from a slave instrument found only on Southern plantations to an international pop phenomenon: songs and playing techniques carried far and wide in the emerging global economy, from the streets of New York's Five Points slum to the gold fields of California and the elite drawing rooms of London, from the battlegrounds of Nicaragua to official diplomatic receptions in Japan. How did this African-derived, slave-borne folk instrument come to symbolize all the best and worst of a young United States of America?
Find out by attending this free public event on Thursday, May 30th, at 6:30 PM. Please help us plan accordingly and register yourself and anyone in your party planning to attend. This program is made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. For more information on NH Humanities, visit www.nhhumanities.org.
About the Presenters: Marek Bennett teaches music and comics in New England and the world beyond. He holds an M. Ed from Keene State College, and is a rostered teaching artist with the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. His work includes the graphic novel The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby and the NH history webcomic Live Free and Draw. Woody Pringle is both a musician and educator teaching at many NH colleges and organizations. His credentials include an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his music is often aired on NH Public Radio’s Folk Show and many radio stations throughout the country.
We hope you will join us to see NH Magazine’s ‘Best of NH’ band in 2016 perform and inspire.
