Kimball Library News 9/13/24

 TAKE TIME TO STRETCH ~ Fridays, 9/20, 27 and 10/4 at 11 AM (Register for each class separately)

On Friday, September 20th join us for a 45-minute chair (or wall) stretch class where you will learn some basic stretches to help you get loose. Stretching can increase flexibility and improve the range of motion in your joints.

On Friday, September 27th join us for a 45-minute floor stretch class. Please bring a beach towel or yoga mat as we will get down on the floor to learn some fantastic stretches that you can then do at home.

On Friday, October 5th join us for a learn about massage tools class. Bring your hand-held massage tool and come learn about how various deep tissue massage guns and muscle massagers work. There will be a couple massage tools on hand as to try out.

About the Instructor: Elizabeth Gallien is a Licensed Massage Therapist who introduces and demonstrates ways to relieve neck, shoulders and back pain with stretching. Elizabeth states it is her professional mission to provide relief for adults with neck, shoulders, and back pain.

INTRODUCTION TO ANTIQUE HAND FANS ~ Tuesday, 9/24 from 6 to 8 PM

French fans. Chinese fans. Japanese fans. American fans. Dance fans. Mechanical fans. Cigar fans. Trickster fans. Church fans. Are you interested in learning about the beautiful art of antique hand fans and their fascinating history? Come and view over 100 fans from the 18th century to the present from all around the world. Showcased will be fans made with bone, ivory, tortoiseshell, feathers, mother of pearl, celluloid, and modern.

Have a fan at home and want to know what it is, where it was made, or what it was made of? Bring it in for fan identification only. No value estimates will be given.

About the Presenter: Shelly J. Goncalves has been collecting antique hand fans for over 50 years. She is a member of the Fan Association of North America (FANA) and the Fan Circle International (FCI) where she was a former board member. Her favorite hand fans are made with mother of pearl.

STORIES AND FUN! ~ Preschool ages on Tuesdays at 12:30 PM

NEW on Tuesdays at 12:30 PM to approximately 1:45 PM we will be enjoying ‘Stories and Fun’. If your child is in a morning preschool or kindergarten class and can’t make our morning storytimes, don’t fret. We have a drop-in time just for you! Stories and accompanying rhymes, crafts, projects or games will be part of the fun. Meet some new caregivers and introduce your child to new friends.

 KIMBALL LIBRARY GOES TO ATKINSON DAY! Saturday, September 7th at Woodlock Park

Join the Kimball Library in the celebration of Atkinson Day! There will be a variety of fun activities throughout the day and evening at Woodlock Park, and between 12 and 2 PM there will be Professional Balloon Twisters sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. Perhaps you'll see some special storybook characters from the Kimball Library as well if you come!

REGISTER FOR RECURRING FALL PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH at KIMBALL LIBRARY!
THIS MONTH’S FEATURE
: MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE

Infants through age 3 with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs modeling after the Mother Goose curriculum. Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages.

Mother Goose on the Loose incorporates nursery rhymes, music, and movement to aid in developing social, language & literacy skills, and strengthening bonds between caregiver and child. It is most beneficial when children experience the program on a weekly basis.

If you sign up, we consider you registered for multiple classes throughout the session. There will be 4 sessions per year, one for each season. Check the online calendar for specific dates. If you sign up for one class, it signs you up for the entire series. You may join mid-session.

Mother Goose (Babies to Age 3): Mondays at 10:15 AM
Join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs modeling after the Mother Goose curriculum.

Bitty Books (Ages 3-6): Tuesdays at 10:15 AM
Join us for stories and crafts that follow a traditional storytime outline.

Sensory Storytime (Ages 3-4): Thursdays at 10:15 AM
Join us for one story and one fingerplay followed by some fun learning stations in the barn.

DROP-IN PLAYTIMES: Playtimes starting Monday, 9/9/24

Preschool Playtime (Babies to age 3): Mondays at 11 AM
Join us after Mother Goose to play with some select toys in the Meeting Room, or pop into the Children’s Room to play with trains and Duplos.

Toddler Time (Ages 2.5 – 5): Thursdays at 11:30 AM
Sensory stations, kitchen set, train table, and Duplo table are available.

Think Outside the Box (Ages 3+) Fridays at 10 AM
We’ll have a variety of STEM toys out to work with.

AFTER SCHOOL ADVENTURES! FALL PROGRAMS FOR ELEMENTARY AGES

That’s right, the Children’s Room isn’t just for preschoolers! We have several programs for older children, including some just after school! Sign up the kids for these super fun classes now to reserve your spot.

Children may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the Library if parents make the necessary arrangements with Pick-Up Patrol. (The Library is not taking responsibility for the transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack them a snack that they can have before 3:30. Parents must let us know of any changes to the drop off/pick up routine or if their child is not attending the class that day.

Elementary Explorers (Grades 1-3): Mondays at 3:30 PM
Elementary Explorers is back on a new day. If you love science, then this is the class for you. Each week, we will have a building challenge or an experiment, so get ready for some (occasionally messy) fun!

Choose Your Own Adventure
(Grades K-5): Wednesdays at 3:30 PM
Activities may include building challenges, easy experiments, crafts, and more!

Kindergarten Club (Ages 5-6): Thursdays at 3:30 PM
Kids ages 5-6 are invited to join us for this highly engaging program. With stories, games, crafts, and an experiment or two, you’re bound to have a great time!

FEATURED ARTIST: MARY ANN ELDRED: Artwork on Display in August 

The Library is hosting an exciting exhibit of Mary Ann Eldred paintings during August and September. Mary Ann began painting in 1989.

Mary Ann Eldred’s work primarily focuses on the New England landscape, though she loves to work on still life’s and wildlife from time to time.

“Capturing the effect of light on either subject is a lovely challenge. All seasons, but especially spring and fall, provide me the opportunity to use the lush colors of the pastel medium to convey the beauty of New England. The unique and lovely quality of the light and the way it strikes the land here have always been an inspiration for me.”

On Monday, August 19th from 5 – 7 PM there will be a Meet the Artist reception. Feel free to stop by and view these lovely paintings and talk with Mary Ann.

PAINTING WITH ACRYLICS ~ TIF FARMAKIS-DAY: Monday, August 26th at 1 PM  

Are you ready to try painting with acrylics? In this introductory class, learn the foundations of working with acrylics, a versatile medium, which can be used in thin layers like watercolors or in more opaque applications like oil paint. Using color, line, composition, texture and form, students will experiment with the many different ways to use the medium to create their own unique masterpiece!

Artist, Tiffany T. Farmakis-Day enjoys exploring a variety of mediums, both traditional and experimental. She teaches workshops at fine crafts studios, galleries, art institutes and more throughout New Hampshire.

LEAP INTO ACTION WITH SNOOPY THE RABBIT! (AGES 4-11): Wednesday, August 28th at 6 PM

Come meet Snoopy, the mini Rex rabbit! Snoopy loves to interact with new people and is looking forward to all of the pats. Feel how soft his fur is, feed him a treat (or maybe 2!) and participate in some fun bunny-themed activities.

Kimball Library News 8/1/24

CRAFT, PAINT & COLOR: Mondays from 12:30 – 2:30 PM

Come unwind, de-stress and create every week. Individuals come together to dabble in painting, coloring or creative crafts using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil. Individuals bring their own supplies and work on canvas, wood, sketchpads and coloring books. Group size will be limited and registration is required.

Research shows that creative activities help you relax. This is an open time so feel free to stay the entire time, leave early or come late. Remember this is a no stress event so if you only have 30 minutes to spare than spend it relaxing with fellow creative art enthusiasts.

POKEMON CHALLENGE: Monday, August 5th between 1 and 7 PM

Can you find them all? Stop by the Children’s Desk to pick up your Pokedex and see how many you can find hiding in the Library. When you've found them all, turn it in for a special prize! Come when you can, leave when you must when the Pokémon are out! This is an Adventure Begins at Your Library scavenger hunt!

NEEDLE CRAFTERS: Wednesdays between 10:30 and noon

Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work, come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great group to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This weekly meet and greet group enjoy conversation and laughs all while stitching away. Register online or give us a call so you can get started. *Please bring your own materials.

SUMMER CONCERT WITH JONATHAN SARTY: Thursday, August 8th at 6 PM

Join us for a night of music with Jonathan Sarty (and his Trio) as he performs a repertoire of music such as: American roots, country, rock, folk, americana, jazz and more.

Songwriter, recording and performing artist Jonathan Sarty is a native of New England. He was awarded a Best of NH “Best Bandleader” Award in 2017 and performs hundreds of shows throughout New England each year. Perhaps most notably he is the host of NH’s Award Winning “Cold River Radio Show

Calling all future engineers! You are invited to join Gail Ramsay (Code & Circuit, Amesbury) and Kathy Watson (Kimball Library) for some coding fun! We will be utilizing iRoot robots. Beginners are welcome as well as those with coding experience.

FILM ENTHUSIAST CLUB - The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: Tuesday, July 16th at 1 PM

During World War II, the British Army assigned a group of competent soldiers a mission against the Nazi forces behind enemy lines. This is true story about a secret British military organization. BEAVERS, OTTERS AND MUSKRATS – Oh My!

Learn all about New Hampshire’s semi-aquatic mammals. Why have humans prized them for their fur? What special adaptations have they developed to spend so much time in the water? Patrick Tate will discuss these questions and more as we take a deep dive into their elusive world.

Patrick Tate is a Wildlife Biologist employed with New Hampshire Fish & Game. His responsibilities include furbearing species monitoring statewide and regional wildlife responsibilities in the southeast portion of New Hampshire.

We'll have the Lego drawer unlocked for our talented builders. Drop in during the timeframe and see what you can build. Need some ideas? We've got you covered. We'll have several challenges for you to try out.

FILM ENTHUSIAST CLUB - THE BOYS IN THE BOAT
