Kimball Library News 10/10/21

If you love the library and want to have a voice about it within the Town of Atkinson, you may wish to spend a bit of your Saturday hearing what Trustees do and how they shape library policies.

You may learn how your skills and talents can be used and decide to become involved in giving back to our community. Or, you might become more enlightened about this important community asset and plan your involvement for a future date. It’s a great opportunity either way!

On October 30, 2021, there will be a brief presentation at the Library to describe the role and expectations of the Trustee in managing the operations of the Library and its staff. There are no obligations beyond listening and hopefully learning.

Trustees will be available to describe the role and requirements of this elected office. Please register to attend. The informative session starts at 10:15 and is expected to run about an hour long depending on questions.

BROWN BAG BOOK CLUB: We’re starting a new season of Brown Bag reading! Read the book and come with some of your dinner in a bag.  We eat, talk, and treats and drinks are provided.  Please register grades 3-6 to join and discuss with us.

Our book for October is Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. We meet on the 28th at 6:00 PM.

It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You! is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry—and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new Youth Services Librarian-Miss Katie Cloughley.

Katie is originally from Goffstown, New Hampshire and spent some time as an undergraduate working with a wildlife rehabilitator before she went on to get her MILS. She previously worked at the Bedford Public Library in Bedford, New Hampshire where she created programs -- often science-based, for children up to 12 years old. The messier the program, the better! She loves to explore and create almost as much as the kids she works with!

Her first programs coming up will be Sensory Storytime. STEAM and STEM based programming is her jam! See the details below.

SENSORY STORYTIME: Join us for an exceptional exploratory class: Sensory Storytime!

Some story times are too long!

Some classes are too easy.

Sensory Storytime is just right for your two or three-year-old who is almost ready for full storytime, but may still be challenged by so much structure. Thursday mornings at 10:30 will be just the right place for your child at Kimball Library.

Join us for one story, followed by an opportunity to play with sensory and art activities that reinforce what was heard in the story. Please register once for the fall session. Visit the online calendar or call us at 603 362-5234 to get started.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: The book of the month is 'Girl in the Blue Coat' by Monica Hesse.

Amsterdam, 1943. Hanneke spends her days procuring and delivering sought-after black-market goods to paying customers, her nights hiding the true nature of her work from her concerned parents, and every waking moment mourning her boyfriend, who was killed on the Dutch front lines when the Germans invaded. She likes to think of her illegal work as a small act of rebellion.

On a routine delivery, a client asks Hanneke for help. Expecting to hear that Mrs. Janssen wants meat or kerosene, Hanneke is shocked by the older woman's frantic plea to find a person - a Jewish teenager Mrs. Janssen had been hiding, who has vanished without a trace from a secret room. Hanneke initially wants nothing to do with such dangerous work, but is ultimately drawn into a web of mysteries and stunning revelations that lead her into the heart of the resistance, open her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi war machine, and compel her to take desperate action.

Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about this book on Wednesday, November 3rd, at 6:00 PM. Multiple copies of the book are here and available for check-out. Candy is served...

Are you one of the many Americans who do not fully maximize their Social Security benefits? Join us on Monday, October 18th, at 1:00 PM or Thursday, October 28th, at 6:30 PM for this practical and informational workshop. Registration is required.

Andy Githmark is a Founding Partner and Wealth Manager at Steward Partners Global Advisory in Manchester.  He has been in the financial services industry since 1997 and has been a financial advisor since 2010.  Two sessions will be offered for this informative hour program on Maximizing Your Social Security with Andrew Githmark.

READERS THEATER: On October 7th at 6:00 PM, we’ll be hosting the popular Kimball Library Reader’s Theater. Register children in grades 2-5 to have a marvelous time trying out expressive reading with voices and in character. This is great fun for the dramatic reader and good practice for the reluctant readers. Scripts are handed out and parts are assigned and then the antics commence! All reading levels are welcome.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION:  The book of the month is 'Symptoms of Being Human' by Jeff Garvin. Discussion is geared for mature middle and high school t/weens.

Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. But Riley isn't exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in über-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley's life.

On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it's really like to be a gender fluid teenager. But just as Riley's starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley's real identity, threatening exposure. And Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything.

Join the most awesome t/weens and chat with us about this book! Copies are available for the asking. Candy is served...  Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 6th, at 6:00 PM.
