Kimball Library News 12/13/11

The youth services department at the library is in the midst of an overhaul. This will require some need on our part to ‘ignore’ our regularly scheduled programs while we recreate ourselves. We are asking for your patience through our transitioning. Except for teen and tween book discussions, there will be no children’s events offered from Dec 27-Jan 17. This gives you a chance to revive and regroup after all the holiday hoopla, and it gives us a chance to plan 6 weeks of activities and introduce you to some new classes for children at the library. There will be multiple offerings for all ages of preschool from birth to age 6 in six week sessions, and after we pick up steam there will be more opportunities for elementary age children also. Take care to note that regularly scheduled preschool story times as well as the Friday Night Read & Feed will take a rest over the vacation week and a bit into the New Year. Do not take a rest from getting some books for everyone. You’ll just have to do the reading and prepare the craft for a few weeks for your little ones. Not to worry, we think you’ll do a great job.

Part of our re-organization revolves around the retirement of our long-standing Children’s Librarian-Carolyn Birr. Carolyn is known and loved by many children and adults and her full-time dedication will certainly be missed. She has served in children’s lives at Kimball Library for 26 years. She also has been a dedicated part of the ‘Friends of the Library’ and was instrumental in her input in the building project. Mrs. Birr is a name that many children first associate with when coming to the library for stories and books. Even the littlest of children quickly learn to say ‘brrrrrrr.’ We are incredibly fortunate that she will remain with us as a part-time member of our staff. Please take time out of your schedule to help us honor and celebrate her presence on Wednesday, December 28th, from 11:30-2:30pm. There will be celebratory cake as long as it lasts. (Sweet-tooth folks should come early!) Do drop by to congratulate her on her wonderful years of service and to thank her for sticking with us.

Stepping up to the plate (but certainly can’t fill her shoes!) is Kathy Watson who will now not only oversee the teen life, but also children’s events and classes as well. We’ll also be adding a new staff member to pitch in for the implementation of some children’s services. Stay tuned for future announcements regarding new staff. Once again, we appreciate your patience in the interim.

Make time for yourself this season by stopping in to check out a book, music, or movie or by jumping online to check out an ebook or audio book just for you. Take time for quiet by dropping by to read the paper or peruse a magazine. We have a lot of new holiday movies that are family friendly as well as dvds that are just for adults on our shelves. Here is just a little sampler: Holiday Collector’s Set Volumes 2 and 4, The Smurfs, Snow Men, Christmas Mail, Dear Santa, Beethoven’s Christmas, The Night Before the Night Before Christmas, A Golden Christmas: The Second Tail, All-Nighter Before Christmas, The Santa Incident, and Christmas Lodge to name a few. These titles and more may be just the quiet breath of fresh air that you need.

We’ll be closed for holiday hours at the end of the month of December on Saturday, December 24th and on Monday, December 26th. We will also be closed on Monday, January 2nd. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!

The third upcoming ‘Holiday Drop n’ Shop’ still has a few places available on Saturday, December 17th, from 10:30am-1:00pm. We’ll show the movie promptly at 10:30am to be followed by a craft that will take a bit of time. For this craft you MUST bring a plain pillowcase to decorate. The craft starts at noon, but we DO have a guest from the North Pole that is expected to interrupt the festivities as well as some cherubic voices so our ending time may not be exact. But we’d still like you to return by 1pm in case your little angel is ready and waiting.

Please note that we require waivers for children ages 6-9 and you may not just drop them off even if they have been pre-registered. ***Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. In any case, ALL AGES MUST REGISTER.

On this particular Saturday Holiday Drop n’ Shop, there are variations to the prior Saturdays. 1. The MOVIE: The Santa Incident (88 min)/CRAFT: Festive holiday pillowcase. (Your second reminder—you MUST bring a pillowcase with you in order to participate.) Please indicate 'YES' on the online registration form if you plan to stay for the craft when you sign up for this activity.

Don’t let December slip away without fun and furry opportunities to increase your child’s literacy. For the last time in 2011, Lady Hawke the reader dog will be here on Wednesday, December 21st, from 4-5pm. Hawke is a very busy black Lab who loves to be read to by readers of all ages. Her time at the library requires registration so that everyone will get a turn and that Hawke doesn’t break up her day unnecessarily. Throw Hawke a bone by registering and attending her literary circle. She’ll definitely wag her tail for that!

Please note that we are in the midst of change that requires more staff education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom. We are doing everything we can do serve you best.

Take care to note that regularly scheduled preschool story times as well as the Friday Night Read & Feed will take a rest over the vacation week and a bit into the New Year. There will be more information on that in future articles. Do not take a rest from getting some books for everyone, it’s just that you’ll have to do the reading and prepare the craft for a few weeks.

Also, we’ll be closed for holiday hours at the end of the month of December on Saturday, December 24th and on Monday, December 26th. We will also be closed on Monday, January 2nd. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to everyone!

If so, we do have Kindles available for you to try out for two weeks that have pre-loaded titles (40 at present count). This is a handy way to find out if this type of device is for you. In case you are unaware, we are part of a state-wide consortium that has ebooks available for compatible readers such as the Nook, Sony, and Kindle through OverDrive. In addition to the consortium, we have purchased ebooks that are part of that pool just for Kimball Library card holders. There also are apps available for the iPad and iPouch touch with this same service. You can download and read ebooks without charge. The links will automatically expire after two weeks unless you decide to send them back early. Why pay for books if you can get them from us? Visit our website www.kimballlibrary.com and click on ‘Downloadable Books’ for information regarding device compatibility as well as the myriad of title choices. Make an informed decision before purchasing. Please also know that this service is available for audiobooks as well with a list of compatible audio devices right on the website. Kimball Library News 11/22/11

Take care not to miss out on registrations for programs as we may have a space or materials limit. This would be particularly true of popular children’s or teen events as well as adult programs that may draw a large crowd. Don’t be disappointed—register early.

You can still register to make a boxwood tree with Felicia Motherway. You’ll have a beautiful long-lasting, elegantly designed holiday tree made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. Pay when you register. This class will take place on Thursday, December 1, from 6-8pm.

The upcoming first ‘Holiday Drop n’ Shop’ still has places available. We’ll show movie to be followed by a simple craft. Please send the kids with movie snacks and spill-proof beverages. Pillows are also welcome if they prefer to sprawl out rather than sit in chairs. You’ll fa la la all the way home! (Please note that we require waivers for children ages 6-9.) ***Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. ALL AGES MUST REGISTER. MOVIE: All-Nighter Before Christmas (99 min)/CRAFT: Sparkling Holiday Ornament. Indicate 'YES' on the online registration form if you plan to stay for the craft when you register. This event will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:30am-12:30pm.

Registration is also required for the upcoming ‘T/ween Holiday No-Bake, Bake-Off!’ taking place on Tuesday, December 20th, from 6:30-8pm. The Teen Holiday 'No-Bake, Bake-Off!' rules are fairly simple. You can make a drink, appetizer or dessert that has a December holiday theme. It has to be primarily made in the library and you can use our microwave to heat up your creation. If you want to do some prep at home that is acceptable. You are allowed to bring your own blender. You have thirty minutes to create your entry. You may work alone or with a partner, and you must be sure to bring everything you need for materials.

The judges will consider presentation, creativity and tastiness as their criteria and rate each category on a scale of 1-5. At the end, the highest score wins a 'cheap and worthless' prize. The judges will not allow a tie. After the judging is over, you'll be able to sample your competitors’ creations while they sample yours. This event is open only to youth in grades 5-12.

Please note that we are in the midst of change that requires more staff education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom.

Kimball Library News 11/15/11

Last week you were promised some details regarding upcoming holiday events, and we hope you did your part by penciling in those dates. It’s now time to get out the indelible ink and stamp them in. We will add to the list as time goes on.
We are kicking off the holidays with the ever-popular and crafty Felicia Motherway. On Thursday, December 1, from 6-8pm it is your night to learn how to make a beautiful fresh boxwood tree to enjoy for the holidays. The boxwood tree is an elegant design made out of boxwood and decorated with velvet ribbon, gold glass balls, berries and natural gypsophila. This popular centerpiece will last for months and is perfect for your home or for those who want a small holiday tree to enjoy. This also is a great gift idea. Even the ‘craft-impaired’ will leave with a tree that looks like it was featured in Better Homes & Gardens. Reservations are required as the class is limited to 20 people. Materials fee of $30.00 must be paid in advance in order for your registration to be secure. Please sign up at the circulation desk.

For children on Saturdays (December 3rd, 10th, and 17th) will be our ever popular ‘Holiday Drop N’ Shop’ from 10:30am-12:30pm on the first two dates. On the 17th, we will end at 1pm. The ‘dropping off’ part is for children ages 6 and up who can be left in our care by signing our release forms. We’ll occupy them with a movie and fun in our large meeting room while you shop or wrap gifts. The movie will be shown first followed by a simple craft class. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to stay for the movie and activities, but a parent or adult supervisor must stay in the building. There will be a different craft and movie each week. Give us a call or come get a brochure detailing our movie schedule.

As for the details on the holiday drop n’ shop crafts... On December 3rd, the craft will entail designing a sparkling holiday ornament for your tree or perhaps for that of your teacher or best friend. On December 17th, the elves will assist you in sanding and painting holiday coasters. These not only make a thoughtful gift, but also a great keepsake. On December 17th, you’ll need to stay a little bit longer to design a decorative pillow case. You will definitely need to bring your own pillowcase from home for this. You will be rocking out your bedroom with a festive pillow, or, if the holiday spirit strikes you, you might wrap it up for someone you love. And shhhhh, don’t tell anyone that we said so, but there will be a special treat on December 17th. Rumor has it that Santa is coming to town and will pop by Kimball Library.

We also have more surprises around the corner for kids in January. Kids in grade 5 will get a lot more opportunities to join in on some events traditionally limited to grades 6 and up. Stories and crafts may be added and/or rearranged for preschoolers. Stay tuned! The best way to keep up is to get news directly sent to your inbox twice a month. Please ask us to add you to our list. This is an efficient way to stay abreast of the newest events and we only send twice a month.

Please note that we will be closed in November on Thursday, November 24th and Friday the 25th (Thanksgiving break). We ARE open on Saturday the 26th for our usual 10am-3pm hours.

Also note that we are making changes that require more education and training than can be done is just a few hours, so we need to close the building to the public on Thursday, December 15th. Please forgive us in advance as this is not our custom.
