Kimball Library News 7/28/14

SQUEEZEBOX STOMPERS:  'JAM' with the Squeezebox Stompers (a blend of Roadhouse Roots, Blues, Cajun, and Zydeco) on Thursday, August 7th at 6:00pm in the Kimball Courtyard, and during intermission around 6:30 we'll be making ice cream sundaes. This event is courtesy of the Friends of Kimball Library and closes out our summer reading programs (both children and t/ween programs).  Bring your 'dancing' shoes!
Please register all ages for accurate buying purposes.

T/WEEN COMBINATION DISCUSSION:  The book of the month is 'Divergent' by Veronica Roth and will take place on Wednesday, August 13th, at 6:30pm.

Divergent is an electrifying thriller filled with tough decisions, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. Fans of the movie will find the book packed with just as much emotional depth and exhilarating action as the film, all told in beautiful, rich language.

One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior's society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions. Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she's determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.

All interested mature middle & high school students are welcome.  Please ask for a copy of the current book at the front desk.

WIGGLE WORDS:  Make letters with your bodies, learn some alphabet sign language, run and jump to rhyming words, and dance, dance, DANCE!

Join Michelle Collins--former teacher, curriculum designer, Zumba instructor, and homeschooling mom to combine letters and movement to jump start your children into literacy. This exciting class will take place on Wednesday, August 20th, from 10:30-11:00am.  Registration is required.  If there is strong interest we may offer this event on a regular monthly basis.

THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE-ANIMAL DEFENSES:  Join Mona from “Critters & Creatures” who will present eight live animals (as well as some artifacts), pointing out some of the various cool ways animals use to protect and defend themselves – such as puffing up to appear larger, quills & bristles, hard shells, venom, urticating (irritating) hairs, stinky glands, regenerating tails, batesian mimicry (when a non-venomous animal resembles a venomous one), camouflage, horns/antlers, etc.

This educational and informative event will be held on Thursday, July 31st, in the Kimball Library Courtyard at 6:30pm.  Please register each person who will attend.  Guests and non-resident friends are welcome, however, we do ask that they register as well in case we need to change venues due uncooperative weather.  We are fortunate that our amazing Friends of Kimball Library sponsored this event for us and is offering it to us free of charge.

SUMMER T/WEEN CHALLENGE:  Many of you know that our t/weens are reading like crazy in order to submit raffle tickets to win prizes such as Water Country passes, ice cream cards to Bre’s Ice Creamery, Canobie Lake tickets, iTunes cards and more.  They also are competing ‘against’ Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, to see it they can get 800 tickets in the jar by July 30th.

IF the t/weens DO get 800 tickets in the jar by July 30th, there will be a bit of madness going on here following the ‘Element of Surprise’ event on Thursday, July 31st.  At the END of the show, if the t/weens have 800 raffle tickets in the jar, then Kathy will be subjected to wearing a large ball python as well as having millipedes and hissing cockroaches draped on her.  IF the t/weens fail, there will be an opportunity for a 15 minute petting zoo.  Obviously, you’ll want your camera!

[Secret information being divulged—as of Friday, July 18th, there were 666 tickets in the jar.  This gives the t/weens 12 days to get another 134 in there.  GO T/WEENS!]

CHANGE of PLANS regarding ‘CIRCUITS’ ~ We are hosting an event for ages 10-19 on Tuesday, July 29, at 6:30pm.  Originally the plan was making a ‘squishy circuit’.  As of today, the plan is now “Farm Clocks”.  Same time, same channel.  J Want to learn more? Read on!

FARM CLOCKS is a unique event exploring circuits and making clocks using either farm fruits or vegetables.  Are you curious about experimenting with electronics, but the fear of electric shock or soldering iron burns keep you away? Why not try vegetable/fruit clock circuits?  It uses apples, potatoes, pears, etc. to power clocks which will last as long as your fruits and vegetables do! By the end of the event, you'll end up with a farm clock of your own to take home. Want to continue using your awesome creation? Just replace the fruits/vegetables.  Want to know more? It won't be fun if we tell you everything, will it?  Register and see!

This event is for registered Atkinson residents first, and then a day before the event friends and guests are welcome if there is available space.  Our guest scientist for the evening is Craig Richard.  Thanks to the Friends of Kimball Library for sponsoring this scientifically healthy event!

FIZZ BOOM ‘That Crazy Sock Catapult’! ~ Bring in a funky mismatched pair of socks to use for this special project. Build a small catapult and then test it yourself! Just fling those crazy socks into the wild outdoors! Compete against your friends to see who can send those socks flying farther! You just might be a winner of this epic contest!

When is this crazy sock madness?  Register in advance and attend on Monday, July 28th, at 6:30pm sharp!  This goofy night is especially for children in grades K-5.

SUMMER SATURDAYS ~ We know that our patrons love spending their summer days soaking up the sun and reading great books!  To celebrate your love for the books of summer, Kimball Library will stay open from 10am-3pm on Saturdays during the summer.  Drop by for those last minute book, music, and movie selections! Are you looking for a suggestion? Ask our staff! We would love to help you find some new literary adventures.
