STANDING ROCK:  Join us, Thursday evening, February 16, 2017 from 6:30 to 8:00 to hear Ann Podlipny discuss her first-hand experience at the Oceti Sakowin camp (otherwise known as the Seven Council Fires Camp). Oceti Sakowin Camp is the largest water protector encampment at Standing Rock Reservation. A massive camp-in led by the Standing Rock nation, aimed at blocking the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), which would carry oil from the Bakken shale in North Dakota across several states and under the Missouri River.  She will provide a visual description from the weekend of December 4th when 5 thousand veterans and 7 thousand water protectors arrived to support the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

The Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation is home to Dakota and Lakota people of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. On July 25, 2016, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Army Corps) granted authorization to the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross Lake Oahe as part of the construction of a 1,100-mile pipeline that is proposed to carry over a half-million barrels of Bakken crude oil to Illinois and across four states.

The construction takes the pipeline less than one half mile from the Tribe’s reservation border and the pipeline would cross the Tribe’s traditional and ancestral lands and the construction of the pipeline jeopardizes many sacred places. The Tribe opposes DAPL because of the honor they have for their ancestors and sacred sites as well as protection the drinking water of the Tribe and its citizens.

About the presenter:  Ann Podlipny has a career background in education and social work.  She works closely with immigrants and refugees in Manchester, NH and volunteers teaching ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Acclaimed author Brunonia Barry returns to the world of THE LACE READER with her new newest release The Fifth Petal, a spellbinding new thriller, full of suspense, seduction and murder.  Join us for an evening with Brunonia Barry as she discusses her latest novel, The Fifth Petal, on Thursday February 23, at 6:30pm.  Following her presentation, books will be available for purchase and the author will do a book signing.

About The Fifth Petal: When a teenage boy dies suspiciously on Halloween night, Salem's chief of police, John Rafferty, now married to gifted lace reader Towner Whitney, wonders if there is a connection between his death and Salem’s most notorious cold case, a triple homicide dubbed 'The Goddess Murders,' in which three young women, all descended from accused Salem witches, were slashed on Halloween night in 1989. He finds unexpected help in Callie Cahill, the daughter of one of the victims newly returned to town. Neither believes that the main suspect, Rose Whelan, respected local historian, is guilty of murder or witchcraft. But exonerating Rose might mean crossing paths with a dangerous force. Were the women victims of an all-too-human vengeance, or was the devil raised in Salem that night? And if they cannot discover what truly happened, will evil rise again?

About the author: Brunonia Barry is the New York Times & international best-selling author of The Lace Reader and The Map of True Places. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. She was the first American author to win the International Women’s Fiction Festival’s Baccante Award and was a past recipient of Ragdale Artists’ Colony’s Strnad Fellowship as well as the winner of New England Book Festival’s award for Best Fiction and Amazon’s Best of the Month. Her reviews and articles on writing have appeared in The London Times and The Washington Post. Brunonia co-chairs the Salem Athenaeum’s Writers’ Committee. More excitement headed your way at the Kimball Library!

GIRLS WHO CODE: Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet girls are being left behind. While interest in computer science ebbs over time, the biggest drop off happens between the ages of 13-17. Girls Who Code was founded with a single mission: to close the gender gap in technology.  Girls Who Code is a nonprofit organization that teaches girls computer science and programming concepts. This is why we are launching a club at the library!  Kimball Girls Who Code Club is being run by certified Girls Who Code instructor Pam Livingston assisted by Kimball’s Kathy Watson.

The program will take place here at the library Thursday afternoons from 2:30-4:30. It does not cost anything to participate, but you are asked to bring a laptop to use. If this is a problem please initiate a conversation with Kathy (kwatson@kimballlibrary.com) as the library has a limited supply of laptops.  The club will take place weekly until June 13th.  The expectation is that you will come unless you are ill or out of town or other significant reasons.  The lessons build weekly and to ‘pass’ you must attend 80% of the meetings.

Questions? Contact Kathy Watson or call the library and ask to talk to her.  Be prepared to bring a laptop or have it dropped off for you.  Please note that the middle school and high school buses does do drop off here at 2:30.  Check with the bus policy regarding this arrangement.  This event is for girls in grades 6-12 only.

HEALTHY EATING FOR SUCCESSFUL LIVING: Healthy Eating for Successful Living starts on Wednesday, February 1st, and runs for 6 consecutive sessions. This series requires registration and individuals must commit to attending all 6 sessions.  Registration is limited to 15 participants.  This program is graciously co-sponsored by the Atkinson Community Center.

Based on the USDA MyPlate, the main components of the program include: goal setting, problem solving, group support, nutrition education, self assessment and management of dietary patterns. Six consecutive 2½ hour sessions are followed by an optional Healthy Eating restaurant outing.

In this workshop, you will...  learn to make healthier food choices, receive tips for improving portion control and label reading, plan meals to better control fats, sugars, carbohydrates and sodium, explore ways to add physical activity to your day, enjoy a healthy, delicious meal together and discover that making small changes can lead to BIG results!
