Kimball Library News 5/14/23

How can it already be THAT time of year again? We are ready to announce that summer reading registration is getting ready to launch on June 2nd and the Summer Concert Series is ready to rock on June 8th!

ALL TOGETHER NOW SUMMER READING 2023: The national theme that most NH libraries are using is ALL TOGETHER NOW which denotes kindness, friendship, and unity and Kimball Library is on the bandwagon!

Last year's challenge was for 200 registrations and the kids won that challenge! The result was making Kathy Watson dye her hair blue. Are the youth in Atkinson up for the challenge? Kids and teens should register to read and convince their friends and family to register, too!

This year if 225 youth register for summer reading (preschool through teen years), there will be 4 WACKY WEDNESDAYS in August (2, 9, 16, 30) where Ms. Kathy will work 10-hour shifts in a rainbow UNICORN onsie from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM! All ages may visit for photo ops and a rainbow treat.  It would be a shame for that opportunity to be lost, so everyone should register to participate!

Registration is simple. Come to the Library in person starting on June 2nd through the month of July. An adult or t/ween fills out a form that takes less than one minute.  Youth entering grades 6 and up in the fall will receive 3 raffle tickets just for starting out. Each subsequent visit with checkouts will earn another raffle ticket.

Children in preschool to grade 5 will be starting with their participation in the children’s room by having a journey coloring page on the wall. Each visit will earn them a sticker on their journey page, and for every five stickers posted they can choose from the prize box and receive brag tags. They will get a bag and other incentives for signing up.

What are you waiting for? Pack up the kids and head to the Kimball Library!

SUMMER CONCERT WITH TRUFFLE: Join us for an evening of music on Thursday, June 8th from 6-7:30 with Truffle celebrating 35+ years as a band, and being nominated best in state by NEMA. They’ve toured in 40 states; and now tour New England constantly. A partial list of international acts they have supported is huge: Dave Matthews Band, Little Feat, Phish, The Band, Blues Traveler, Buckwheat Zydeco, Spin Doctors, Arlo Guthrie, Merl Saunders, Baba Ulatundje, and Toots and the Maytalls. They’ve released five albums, as well as numerous compilations culminating in their “30th Bandiversary Double Bootleg”. Roots and soul music with strong songwriting makes for a truly unique Truffle sound all their own.

“I’m happy to be back on stage with Truffle this year. Truffle is a world class band. First and foremost they write great songs. I have played music with the best in the world; Truffle holds their own and then some.” ~ Bill Payne (Little Feat)

“Truffle is musically tight, their lyrics are inspired and they do not rely on gimmicks for appeal. Instead, Truffle offers songs with the listener in mind – songs that have been masterfully crafted and arranged.” ~Showcase, Foster's Daily Democrat (Dover, NH)

The 2023 Summer Concert Series is generously sponsored by George Family Charities and hosted by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

Kimball Library News 5/7/23

How can newspapers help us with our genealogical research? What treasures do they hold beyond the standard obit? The truth is, historical local newspapers are equivalent to our current day social media. They often told of social calls, well-being and personal anecdotes of people around town. But where are these newspapers? How can we locate and access them and what strategies can we use to calibrate our search in digitized collections? Join us on Thursday, June 1st from 6-7:30 PMfor ‘Newspaper Treasures: Beyond the Obit with Erin Moulton’ for a tour around the web as we peek into subscription and free newspaper collections including a glimpse into Kimball Library's WorldAccess/Newsbank database.

Presenter:  Erin E. Moulton writes books and tracks dead people. Erin is the author of 4 novels has over 12 years of experience tracking down interesting real-life questions at the reference desk as is a librarian and genealogist.

SATURDAY STEAM: It’s time again on Saturday, June 10th at 10:30 AM to have some more fun with STEAM. This month’s education will be about wooden paddle boats. Kids in grades K-3 are invited to register so they can create and race a boat against their peers. Registration and kits are limited so act fast!

NEEDLE CRAFTERS: Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great place to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This friendly bunch meets on Wednesdays between 10:30 and 12:30.

CURIOUS KIDS: Drop in on Wednesday mornings between 10:00 AM and noon in the Children’s Craft Barn so your ‘curious creatures’ can explore some sensory learning materials. Play will be monitored and guided by caregivers. The Library will set the stage for curious minds. Toddlers and preschool children are welcome with their caregivers and siblings. Come when you can, leave when you must!

Adult supervision is necessary. Librarians are available to guide and play, but caregivers must remain in the room. Registration is not required.

TODDLER TIME: Need more events for toddlers? We are here for you! Did you know that play is extremely important for a child's development?

Drop into the Children's Room on Thursdays anytime from 11:30 -1:30 and play with the stations we set up for you. We'll have building toys, sensory bins and bags, and more! Adult supervision is necessary. (Shh, lately, lots of the caregivers have had a lot of fun with our toys!)
