Kimball Library News 12/26/21

Join us for this fun fan of films group.

WINTER FILM ENTHUSIAST CLUB: View award winning films, documentaries, foreign films and modern classics. Watch the feature film and then join the group in giving a 'thumbs up' review.  Films are shown on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday in January, February and March and start promptly at 1:00 PM. Space is limited and therefore registration is required.  This is not a drop-in program. Try out self-registration with our new Assabet calendar which can be found on the website under ‘event calendar’.

Hope to see you for the first film on Tuesday, January 11th.

FELTED SOAP WORKSHOP: Why should kids have all the fun? Pauline Fabiano led a great workshop this summer for kids, and now it’s time for teens and adults to join in this creative craft on Thursday, January 27th at 6:00 PM.

Learn the basics of making felted wool soap (soap and washcloth all-in-one). Felted soap is not only beautiful, but also great for your skin and for the environment. The felted wool creates a nice gentle exfoliant, plus wool is a naturally antimicrobial fiber, so you don’t need to worry about mold or mildew.

In this engaging and creative workshop participants will be introduced to needle felting and leave with two completed bars of felted soap. Great for gift giving and of course to keep one for yourself. Participants will choose from a variety of colorful, local wool roving to create beautiful and unique bars of soap. No two bars are ever identical! Hand-crafted soap, in a variety of scents, will be provided. However, please feel free to bring your own bars if you have a preference.

*Registration is required and seating is limited. A non-refundable materials fee of $12.00 must be paid at time of registration. Stop in at the library and sign up in person! Registration is not confirmed until payment is received at the Library. *

This program is generously sponsored by The Friends of the Kimball Library.

KINDERGARTEN CLUB: This afterschool event is designed to be highly engaging for kindergarten aged children. Just like a typical storytime, we will read a couple of books, play some games that will build listening and vocabulary skills and even have an experiment or two.

Children may take the bus from Atkinson Academy to the Library if parents make arrangements with pick-up patrol. (The Library is not responsible for the transportation, we are only letting you know that there is a bus that stops here.) Please pack them a snack that they can have before 3:30.

Parents MUST let the Library know of any changes to the drop off/pick up routine OR if their child is not attending the class*.

This unique opportunity is on Fridays at 3:30 starting January 7- February 25 for ages 5 & 6.

HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed on January 17th for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  Please plan accordingly.

T/WEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: The book of the month for January is 'Show Me a Sign' by Ann Clare LeZotte.

Mary Lambert has always felt safe and protected on her beloved island of Martha's Vineyard. Her great-great-grandfather was an early English settler and the first deaf islander. Now, over a hundred years later, many people there -- including Mary -- are deaf, and nearly everyone can communicate in sign language. Mary has never felt isolated. She is proud of her lineage.

But recent events have delivered winds of change. Mary's brother died, leaving her family shattered. Tensions over land disputes are mounting between English settlers and the Wampanoag people. And a cunning young scientist has arrived, hoping to discover the origin of the island's prevalent deafness. His maniacal drive to find answers soon renders Mary a 'live specimen' in a cruel experiment.

Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about this book! Copies are available for the asking. We’ll be meeting on January 5, 2022 at 6:00 PM. There will always be candy!
