Join us Thursday, December 1 at 6:30 PM to hear motivational speaker, Randy Pierce, as he speaks about life lessons with engaging stories of his progress through managing adversity. He learned to thrive not just in spite of challenge but perhaps because of it.

During two short but significant weeks in 1989, a devastating neurological disease transformed Randy Pierce from a healthy and ordinary young man to a blind man completely uncertain of his future. Randy’s passion for experience encouraged him to use adversity as a positive catalyst for growth and opportunity, resulting in such amazing adventures and honors as his earning his second-degree black belt, historic hiking accomplishments in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and summiting Africa’s highest peak—Mount Kilimanjaro, winning a national marathon championship, competing in Tough Mudder events, and being inducted as a fan into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  Believe and Achieve through Goal Setting, Problem Solving, and Perseverance is the focus of his program.

Registration is required.  Do this via phone or website.  This program is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by Community Crossroads located in Atkinson, NH and The Friends of The Kimball Library.

LOW VISION GADGETS & TECHNOLOGY: Stephanie Hurd from the McGreal Sight Center (Association for the Blind) will present 'Low Vision Gadgets & Technology' on Tuesday, December 6th, at 1:00pm.  She will bring some devices and gadgets to assist individuals who have low vision.  She will also will talk about how low tech and high tech including apps can help those who have low vision do many things.  Some of the devices she will have on hand include money readers, large print check books and tons of different magnifiers. She covers how magnifiers are all different and therefore you can't just have someone run to the store to pick one out for someone else.

McGreal Sight Center (The NH Association for the Blind) assists people who are partially sighted so that they can use their remaining vision more effectively. Low vision evaluations and training in the use of low vision aids and devices is provided by eye care professionals and low vision therapists. The Low Vision department provides vision assessments and demonstrations of magnification equipment and adaptive aids. A Low Vision Specialist is trained to conduct a functional eye examination that focuses directly on how a particular person's vision affects day-to-day living. Hand-held magnifiers or special reading glasses can help individuals make the most of their remaining vision.

In addition to optical and non-optical aids, Low Vision Therapists provide information and recommendations to help clients make modifications to their environments so that they can continue to feel safe and comfortable in their homes. Changes can include improved lighting and contrast while reducing glare through the use of colored filters or window blinds.

Stephanie’s presentation will allow time Q&A. This is a prefect presentation to attend if you either have low vision, if you know of someone who has low vision needs, or if you just have general questions if low vision services might be appropriate for you.
