Kimball Library News 7/10/17

Just a reminder that it’s not too late for youth entering grades 5 and up to join our ‘Charity Stitch-A-Bit’. Every Monday between 2:30 and 4:30 those youth are invited to knit and or/crochet for charity. We are working on easy baby hats that will be donated to shelters or care centers. We have adults on hand to help the novice knitters/croch eters. Come for part or all of the 2 hour window.  Once you register your children, they will get a reminder each week. Please reply to the reminder email if you don't plan to make that particular session.

BUILD A BETTER BFF: Invite your BFF, or make a new BFF, at an ‘after hours’ party at the library for kids in grades 5 and up.  We’ll have ice breaker games, games in the courtyard (weather permitting), stack attack, pizza, and we will end with a movie voted on by the group. This is an informal time to get to know your BFF better and make some new friends, too.  Let’s BUILD a BETTER FRIENDSHIP together!
Plan to wear comfy clothes and bring a simple snack to share for at least 12 others.  We will provide pizza and drinks.  This ‘older’ t/ween event is on Tuesday, July 25th, and goes from 8-11.  We’ll vote on the 90 minute movie that will start at 9:30 sharp.  We will do that right at 8pm so you and parents can decide if you want to stay.

Plan to be IN the building before 8pm as the doors will be locked.  Plan to be locked-in until the party is over or indicate when being dropped off what time your parents are coming to collect you.  Youth must be at least 10 or entering grade 5 in the fall.  No exceptions.  Parents must bring you in (not drop you at the door) and leave a number where they can be contacted if necessary.

BUILD A BETTER SUNDAE: Summer reading participants and their guests are invited to join us for ice cream sundaes.  We will have a myriad of toppings for you to choose from so you can 'build a better sundae'.  Come at 6:30pm and after you build your sundae you can stay and build some other structures for sport.

ALL ages need to register so we will have enough ice cream and toppings on Wednesday, July 26th.  This event is limited to those registered for summer reading and their families. Thank you to The Friends of Kimball Library for being our sponsors!

BUILD A COMIC STRIP: Start with an idea, form a plan, and learn some cartooning techniques to help you draft and edit your own cartoon characters on the page. Make your cartoon silly, humorous, or insightful. Tell a story or make a joke. Kids in grades K through 5 will leave with their own comic strip to show off to their friends!

Register youth entering grades K-5 in the fall of 2017 for this fun activity happening on Thursday, July 27th, at 6:30pm.

Miss Maybell and Slimpickin’s are a unique musical duo based in Jackson N.H. They play American Roots, Blues, Jazz, Country, and Ragtime music from the 1910-40s, as well as classic original tunes. They were recently awarded by New Hampshire Magazine “Best of N.H. 2016”, for Best Americana Music. Their rustic sound is entirely acoustic, made with Resonator guitar, banjo, ukulele, Washboard, suitcase drum kick and a 1930’s bazooka Kazoo, just to name some of their instrumentation.

They have been playing all around New England and in New York City and have been tremendously well received! Some venues worthy of note are the legendary Folk venue Club Passim, The Press Room, Acoustic Artisans, The Cold River Radio Show , Le Fanfare , and Epistrophy. Miss Maybell & Slimpickin’s have also been featured on several radio stations like: WMWV, WMPG Portland, & WNHN Concord.  They have also been featured on Dan Aykroyd’s Blues Radio Program “Blues Breaker” this past July.

“They pose like a Grand Ole Opry comedy act (think Minnie Pearl) and play music from the 1920-1930s-era, jug band, ragtime, jazz and blues with sincere virtuosity. Slimpickin’s writes songs and plays classic finger-style guitar; Miss Maybell plays banjo and taps her steel brushes on a tricked-out washboard. She also commands an impressive kazoo, but the secret weapon they unleash is Maybell’s vocals — deep and strong enough to join an angel choir with the likes of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday.” – New Hampshire Magazine

Bring a blanket or lawn chair on Thursday, July 20th, at 6:30pm and enjoy the music. In the event of inclement weather this concert will be moved indoors.  These sizzling summer sounds are sponsored by The Friends of the Kimball Library.

BUILD A BETTER BODY: Move, lift, tone, strengthen, sweat!  You won’t even realize you’re working out with this strength training workout. We’ll use light weights, lots of repetitions, and movement set to music you will recognize. Invite your friends for a workout that will get your muscles ready for all those summer sports and activities.  Please register grades 5 and up for Tuesday, July 18th at 6:30pm to move along with Michelle Collins and other cool cats. Leave your sweat and calories behind and walk away with a smile on your face!

BUILD A READING FORT: Join a team of kids to build a reading fort in the library! It will be harder than it seems, even for the best fort makers out there.

You will be given some guidelines and supplies, and you will be tasked to work together to make a plan, build and secure your fort, and practice your reading skills in it. Finally, you can take turns with the other team to show off your fort features and 'rooms'.Please register students entering K through anyone who is not too old or too cool to build a fort.  ;)  This activity takes place on Wednesday, July 19th, at 6:30pm.

BUILD AN ARCHITECTURE STRUCTURE: Stop in anytime between 10:30am and 4:30pm on Thursday, July 20th for building fun with these captivating KEVA planks. Use the cards to make models of famous architecture or use your creativity to build a structure of your own.

Please register all ages so we can prepare properly.

Join NH teaching artist, Marek Bennett’s, COMICS WORKSHOP to learn how cartoonists build entire worlds and universes out of the simplest possible materials!  Using only blank pages, pencils, ink, and four basic ‘building blocks” of stories, we’ll craft dynamic characters and rich settings, and bring them to life in comic panels, strips, and pages.  We’ll also look at how artists and authors use peer feedback to improve their work, and how to supplement our new worlds with helpful maps, splash pages, and more.  In just two hours (6-8pm on Tuesday, July 11th) you will be a comic artist!

This interactive workshop builds literacy skills, hones powers of imagination, shares complex project organization and self-publishing techniques, and helps young artists collaborate, appreciate, and support the work of their neighbors.  Participants each create 1+ pages of original comics, and go home with the skills necessary to continue creating comics all summer long.  No experience required – everyone can draw comics!

This workshop is limited to 25 participants and it’s crucial to be committed to coming.  This event is intended for youth entering grade 5 and up.  If not enough tweens and teens sign up by July 1, we will lower the age to include those entering grade 4.  Come on tweens and teens–build a better comic artist!
This amazing opportunity is sponsored by The Friends of Kimball Library.  For more information on the artist please visit www.MarekBennett.com.

CACTUS HEAD PUPPETS: Join us for some puppet theater! Known for their playful performance style, exuberant creativity, and ability to make their audiences laugh, Cactus Head Puppets will be performing a comedic, updated adaption of the traditional folktale ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’.
The Town of Hamelin has a rat problem, and there’s only one person who can help. Not only does the town find a musical solution to pest control, but the kids of Hamelin also teach the grownups a lesson about generosity.  (Speaking of generosity, this event is sponsored by the generous Friends of Kimball Library.)

You will be in awe at the puppeteers’ use of rod, and hand puppets in this musical and fun filled show. Don’t miss the show on Wednesday, July 12th, at 6:30pm.  Please register all ages.

BUILD with LEGOS: Stop in anytime On Thursday, July 13th, between 10:30am and 4:30pm to try your hand at building and construction using our Legos.  Stay for a small amount of time or stay for hours to build with Lego blocks. You might even build a whole Lego city!  Please register all ages.  We will provide Duplos for the littles.

BUILD a WHALE: It's a better world when we are as creative as we can be! Bring one big white sock when you come and you're ready to create the giant of the ocean, the Great White Whale! This is a fun puppet to make and enjoy.

Please register children entering kindergarten through 5th grade in the fall of 2017 for a whale of a good time on Monday, July 17th, at 6:30pm.  Please don’t forget the large white tube sock!

Are you a grandparent with visiting grandkids this summer?
