Kimball Library News 10/26/15

3 D MOVIES:  Early release at Timberlane Regional School District on November 10 gives us an opportunity to show two 3-D feature films in the afternoon. We’ll be showing Marvel Avengers Age of Ultron at 12:30pm (Rated PG 13.  Run time: 2 hours and 21 minutes) and Despicable Me 2 showing at 3pm (Rated PG.  Run time: 1 hour and 38 minutes).  The movies are back to back and will start promptly.

Come check out our new GIANT TV screen with a movie in 3D.  Pack up some movie candy and a water bottle.  Please register each guest so we know how much popcorn to make. You can even print yourself and your friends a ticket!  Note that youth under the age of 10 may not be left without adult supervision.

VETERANS DAY PROGRAM: 'Code Burgundy: The Long Escape' with John Katsaros will be at the library on November 10th @ 6:30 PM.  Surviving a B-17 bailout in 1944 over France, airman, John Katsaros is captured by the Gestapo. Then he is rescued by the French underground in which begins a perilous quest for freedom through France and Spain.  His detailed account unfolds a true story of grit, grace, and pure luck.  Books will be available for sale at the program.  This memorable event is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. 

PEDDLERS MARKET Join the Friends of Kimball Library on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 9-3 as invited ‘crafters’, artisans, and purveyors of fine foods showcase their work at the wildly popular 11^th Annual (indoor) Peddlers Market.  This event is a crowd pleaser, providing distinctive shopping, with many new and favorite returning artisans.  Stop by the cozy café at The Atkinson Community Center, 4 Main St., (Rte.121) to greet friends and neighbors and check out the ‘fine art of craft’.   Truly, there is something for everyone!    

You will be utterly amazed at the raffle baskets this year already being showcased at the library that will end up being at the Peddlers Market on the day of the event.  Stop by now and stock up on tickets!  You don’t have to be present to win.  The raffle winners will be drawn at 2:30pm on November 14^th.  We also have some lovely photography being displayed as silent auction items.  What are you waiting for? HURRY on down and see!  Get your tickets and bids in early!

SNAPS AGAIN!: Snap Circuits gives your child a hands-on education in how electrical circuits work to run the everyday devices that they're familiar with. They'll also gain valuable lessons in building and in following instructions. With these projects, children will experiment with things like electric switches, integrated circuits, digital circuits, fuses, and the transformation of circuit sounds into other sounds.

The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more.  If the children have come to the lab in the past, they can start where they left off and do not have to repeat projects.

Kimball Library News 10/19/15

TEENS CHANGE THE DATE:  Generally the teens meet the second Wednesday of each month to discuss the book of the month, but in November that lands on the Veterans Day holiday.  We will be meeting instead on Tuesday, November 10^th, at 6:30pm to have conversation and chat regarding the novel, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’ by Jesse Andrews. 

Rachel has been diagnosed with leukemia—-cue extreme adolescent awkwardness—-but a parental mandate has been issued and must be obeyed. When Rachel stops treatment, Greg and Earl decide the thing to do is to make a film for her, which turns into the Worst Film Ever Made and becomes a turning point in each of their lives.  

I guarantee we’ll have lots to talk about with the teen popular book.  Get your copy at the main desk now!

*FAMILY SCARECROW MAKING:  It's family fun time on Saturday, November 7^th, from 12:30-1:30pm! Let's put those fall leaves to good use and come together to create scarecrows! We'll use autumn leaves and a bit of know-how to build a family friend to display in your yard.

*Families will need to provide a hat and set of clothing for their scarecrow.  Registration is required for this fun activity in person at the children’s desk.  Atkinson residents will be given first priority.  Non-residents are welcome to register on November 2nd.

BIBBIDI-BOBBIDI-BOO: You are enthusiastically invited to attend a movie night at the library. The feature film is the latest released version of ‘Cinderella’.  

Popcorn will be provided to our guests. The movie will begin at 6:00pm SHARP. You are welcome to bring a paper bag supper or movie treats to enjoy. Water bottles are encouraged.  Non-residents are welcome.

When her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her daughters. Never one to give up hope, Ella's fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger.  Running time is 1hr. 54min. Rated PG.

Registration is required for this event taking place on Friday, November 13^th, at 6pm.  

HOLIDAY HOURS: We will be closed in honor of our Veterans on Wednesday, November 11^th, for Veterans Day.  We are grateful for their service.  Please stock up accordingly.

Please note that we are closed on both Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27 for a Thanksgiving hiatus.  We are open on Saturday the 28^th.  Have a happy Thanksgiving!  We know that we are especially thankful for all our wonderful patrons!

CRAZY EIGHTS MATH CLUB:  Who?  Grades 3-5?  When?  Thursdays in October and November from 4:30-5:30pm.  Why?  You’ll get to do mischief making activities like Glow-in-the-Dark Geometry, Bouncy Dice and Toilet Paper Olympics, and you’ll get to take home some cool gadgets, too.  We already started the club, but we still have some seats left and we know you’ll fit right in, so register today!

EYES ON OWLS: Who whoo whooo what? A live owl program that includes 6 owls, that’s who and what!

Everyone loves owls! Yet, how often do you get to see an owl up close? Perhaps you've glimpsed the shadowy form of a Great-horned Owl in the beam of your headlights as you traveled a back road at night. Have you ever scanned a frozen saltmarsh or hayfield in winter, hoping to find that arctic hunter, the Snowy Owl? How about that mob of noisy crows circling a white pine tree? Have they found an owl?  Join teacher/naturalist Marcia Wilson and author/photographer/naturalist Mark Wilson in sharing their passion for owls!

'Owls of the World - Who's Watching You?' introduces you to the owls of New England and beyond. Mark and Marcia share the field marks, signs and naturalist's skills that you can use to find wild owls without disturbing them. Next, you meet six live owls (from small to huge) up close. Everyone participates in a hooting lesson and learns tips on how to attract and protect owls near you. While the selection of live owls varies from group to group, chances are you'll meet New England's tiniest owl, the Northern Saw-Whet Owl (weighing in at 4 ounces) along with the world's largest owl, the Eurasian Eagle Owl (check out that five foot wingspan!). Other species that figure prominently in our program can include Eastern Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Barn Owl, Great-horned Owl, Snowy Owl and Spectacled Owl. Owl pellets and white wash are topics of great interest at our programs and we spend time dissecting these fascinating aspects of owl biology. Join us for a hooting good time!
