The book of the month for T/ween Book Club is 'A Very Large Expanse of Sea' by Tahereh Mafi.

It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.

Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments - even the physical violence - she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her - they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds - and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down.

Join the most chill t/weens and chat with us about this book on April 7th at 6:30 PM. Copies are available at the Main Circ Desk for checking out.

HISTORY OF THE MERRIMACK RIVER WITH DYKE HENDRICKSON: Local author and journalist Dyke Hendrickson will discuss his new book, Merrimack: The Resilient River, An Illustrated Narrative of the Most Historic River in New England, in this Zoom webinar happening on Wednesday, April 21, at 7:00 PM.

About the Book: Part history and part call to action, Dyke's well-researched book highlights the dramatic life of the Merrimack River, from the colorful days of the Native Americans to its current status as one of the most scenic recreational waterways in New England. The 117-mile river runs from central NH to Newburyport, MA, where it meets the Atlantic. Here the Coast Guard was born and colonial trade thrived. The Industrial Revolution was launched in the riverside mills of Lowell, MA and Manchester, NH. The science of clean drinking water was developed in Lawrence, MA and the first successful labor action also took place in Lawrence. Thousands of immigrants worked in mills along the Merrimack, and this book tells their riveting stories. In the 70s, the once-filthy Merrimack was cleaned up to serve again as one of the most popular waterways in New England. The Merrimack is still an essential resource. It serves as the source of drinking water for a half-million people. Many have seen part of the Merrimack River, but this unique book provides information and images about all sectors of this great waterway.

About the Author: Dyke Hendrickson is the outreach historian for the Merrimack River Watershed Council. In that role he speaks on the history of the Coast Guard and of the Merrimack River. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a degree in history, and he did graduate work at the University of Maine, Orono. He is a former writer and editor with the Portland Press Herald, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Boston Herald and The Daily News in Newburyport.

Register directly on Zoom by finding the event listing on our online calendar.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library and is presented in collaboration with libraries in the Merrimack Valley and the Kimball Library.  When registering you will receive an email from Tewksbury Public Library who is the sponsor.  Please sign up from your phone or home device to attend this event.  Thank you.

THAT THE PEOPLE MAY LIVE: That the People May Live - The Life and Legacy of Nicholas Black Elk, Holy Man of the Lakota with Damian Costello.

Join us virtually as we explore the life and legacy of Nicholas Black Elk (c.1866-1950), the Lakota holy man made famous by the book Black Elk Speaks. Mr. Costello begins with Black Elk's Great Vision and his struggle to discern his calling during the events of the Great Sioux War. During his long life, Black Elk lived out his vision in three overlapping roles: as a traditional healer, a Catholic teacher, and a revivalist of Indigenous traditions. In the midst of great tragedy, Black Elk wove these three strands into one beautiful life exemplifying survival, hope, and reconciliation.

We will discuss the relevance of Black Elk's legacy for broader questions of Abenaki survival in Northern New England, hope in the face of global environmental problems, and reconciliation in the midst of growing political and religious sectarianism. This talk is based on extensive historical research, extended residency in Indian Country, and continuing conversation with Lakota elders.

This epic event is sponsored by the NH Humanities and will be via Zoom on Thursday, March 18th at 6:00 PM. Registration is required.
