Kimball Library News 9/23/19

Now that the summer is officially behind us, we are back to the weekly pattern of movies on Tuesdays at 1 PM starting mid-October.  Movies tend to be a very popular event so we suggest you arrive early  to obtain seating and your free popcorn.

On the October film horizon is planned--- Yesterday (Oct 1), Maiden (Oct 15), Pavarotti (Oct 22), and Wild Rose (Oct 29). Please note that movies are subject to change beyond our control.  The website is your best place to look for undated titles.

STEVE BLUNT HALLOWEEN CONCERT: Join us for silly and spooky songs and stories with the ever-popular local songwriting artist and performer, Steve Blunt! Wear a costume (non-gruesome, please) and shake your scaries out! Invite your friends and neighbors to get in the Halloween spirit with us. Register all ages as we do have a space restriction.

This Halloweenish event is taking place on Wednesday, October 23, starting promptly at 6 PM. The last time Steve was at the library we were 'sold out'! Be prepared to get on the list early to reserve your family's seats. You won't be disappointed.

Note: All ages are welcome but material content is best suited for ages 3-10. Children under the ages of 6 are expected to sit with an adult caregiver.

THE CAPITAL CRIME OF WITCHCRAFT: On first impression, the witchcraft trials of the Colonial era may seem to have been nothing but a free-for-all, fraught with hysterics. Margo Burns explores an array of prosecutions in seventeenth century New England, using facsimiles of primary source manuscripts, from first formal complaints to arrest warrants, indictments of formal charges to death warrants, and the reversals of attainder and rescinding of excommunications years after the fact; demonstrating how methodically and logically the Salem Court worked. This program focuses on the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692 and 1693, when nineteen people were hanged and one crushed to death, but also examines a variety of other cases against women in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

About the Presenter: Margo Burns is the 10th-generation great-granddaughter of Rebecca Nurse, who was hanged in Salem in 1692 on the charge of witchcraft. She is the project manager and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt, published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. This work is the definitive collection of transcriptions of the legal records of the episode. Burns is also a life-long fan of cartoons, cutting her teeth on Popeye and Yogi Bear on Saturday mornings as a child, then formally studying animation for two years in the Rhode Island School of Design's Continuing Education Program as an adult. She has been leading computer animation projects with middle and high school students since 2001 at UNH's Tech Camp in Durham, where each crew makes a complete film in a week.  Burns currently works at St. Paul's School, as the Director of The Language Center, where she is also the adviser to a student club, the International Lunchtime Animation Festival (iLAF), which taps her personal library of animation of over 750 titles.

WICKED SALEM: Come join us as we welcome author and paranormal expert Sam Baltrusis on Thursday, October 17th at 6:30 PM. Sam will be discussing his 2019 release book, Wicked Salem: Exploring Lingering Lore & Legends.

About the Book: It’s no surprise that the historic Massachusetts seaport’s history is checkered with violence and heinous crimes. Originally called Naumkeag, Salem means 'peace.” However, as its historical legacy dictates, the city was anything but peaceful during the late seventeenth century. Did the reputed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, strike in Salem? Evidence supports the possibility of a copy-cat murder. From the recently pinpointed gallows where innocents were hanged for witchcraft to the murder house on Essex Street where Capt. Joseph White was bludgeoned to death and then stabbed thirteen times in the heart, Sam Baltrusis explores the ghost lore and the people behind the tragic events that turned the 'Witch City” into a hot spot that has become synonymous with witches, rakes, and rogues.

About the Author: Sam Baltrusis has penned eleven historical-based ghost books. He has been featured on several national TV shows, including Destination America’s Haunted Towns and the Travel Channel episode on Salem, and has served as Boston’s paranormal expert on the Biography Channel’s Haunted Encounters. Baltrusis moonlights as a tour guide and launched the successful ghost tours, Boston Haunts and the Wicked Salem Tour.  This October he will be featured on 'Most Terrifying Places' that will air on the Travel Channel.

Following the presentation there will be time for Q&A along with a book selling and signing for those interested. This literary event is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Please register in advance.

ELIMINATION DIETS: In lieu of Healthy Cookbook Club this month, join us to learn all about Elimination Diets: How to determine which foods may be causing gastrointestinal distress.  This educational event is happening on Monday, October 21st at 6:30 PM.

Did you know?? Some foods don't digest the same way for everyone. Sometimes even foods we are accustomed to eating ferment and cause gas, bloating, pain and altered bowel movements. Food sensitivity tests are not always accurate, so isolating certain foods is a better assessment.
Join us as Courtney Eaton discusses how elimination diets work and which foods typically cause a reaction for individuals with gastrointestinal conditions. You will leave with a list of typical 'trigger' foods and a recipe with 'safe' ingredients.

About the presenter: Courtney Eaton, RDN, LDN specializes in weight management and gastrointestinal symptom management. She is devoted to teaching, providing accountability, and supporting individuals throughout their wellness journey. She promotes small, realistic goals that result in gradual, sustainable behavior changes. Eaton is Owner of New England Nutrition Advisors, LLC is a partnership of dietitians with a passion for determining and demolishing barriers that prevent the achievement of wellness goals. New England Nutrition Advisors is located in Atkinson, NH.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Please register to attend.

Join us as we welcome back Nancy Steenson, College Admissions Coach, for Standing Out in the College Admissions Process on Tuesday, October 1st, at 6:30 PM. Standing out in the College Admissions Process will cover strategies to increase the chance of admission at selective schools, standardize tests, writing college essays and the who, when and what to ask regarding recommendation letters.  In addition, Nancy will answer questions such as: Are extracurricular activities important and do students need to be well-rounded?

About the presenter:  Nancy Steenson, a graduate of Tufts University, served on the Timberlane Regional School Board for six years, and was chairman for two. During that time, she served on a number of committees, including the Curriculum Committee, which she co-chaired for four years. Nancy is passionate about education, and has always advocated for strong academics in the public school system in order to prepare students for college. She believes that many students can underestimate the college admissions process. Nancy works with them to market themselves in their best light by sharing specific strategies that help them to stand out amidst thousands of other applicants. She enjoys working with young people, helping them realize their full potential in the college application process. With her guidance, students have been accepted into very selective colleges and top programs in their field.
This program is designed for high school students and their parents. Registration is required.

ANTI-BULLYING: October is Bullying Prevention Month. We invite youth ages 7-12 to join us as we learn anti-bullying strategies from Chris Fazzio, local Kung-Fu instructor. This important event is happening here at the library on Saturday, October 5th, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.

Chris will address four topics in his workshop:  Bullying awareness in general, the protocol for dealing with a bully, some practical physical techniques for self-defense, and useful tips on dealing with verbal and cyber bullying.

Help your kids to learn more about how to stand up to bullying and help us make our community safe, happy, and bully-free! Please register your kids ages 7-12 to attend this awesome and educational program!

GIRLS WHO CODE: Girls Who Code is back for year number three, and this year’s classes start October 9th at 6:30 PM.  Parents are strongly encouraged to come in and meet with the instructors on the first evening.

Girls Who Code is a nonprofit organization that teaches girls computer science and programming concepts. Kimball Girls Who Code Club is being coached by certified Girls Who Code instructors Pam Livingston and Ellie Linehan. Kathy Watson facilitates.

The program will take place here at the library Wednesdays at 6:30 and gets out at 7:45. It does not cost anything to participate. The club will take place 3 times a month until the end of May with some additional weeks off--especially vacation weeks, meeting room conflicts, and the first Wednesdays will never be a week we meet. The expectation is that you will come unless you are ill or out of town. The lessons build weekly and to 'pass' you need to attend 80% of the meetings.

Questions? Contact Kathy Watson at kwatson@kimballlibrary.com. Please be prepared to bring a Chromebook if you have one that you are comfortable with. (We do have Lenovo Chromebooks for use during class, too, thanks to the awesome generous donation from The Greater Salem Rotary Club.) This event is for girls in grades 5-8. Mature 5th graders, only, please. We will consider savvy high school girls as facilitators for community service hours or special independent projects.

Timberlane/Hampstead students have preference. Email Kathy Watson to discuss your participation if you are not a Timberlane Regional School District student. We generally do not take new participants after November.
