Kimball Library News 3/25/19


The Kimball Library is pleased to announce that it now accepts passport applications on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.  U.S. Citizens planning international travel may apply for their passports here at 5 Academy Avenue by appointment.  

For application forms, information on documentation required, fees, and a wealth of other passport and international travel information, visit the only official website for passport information – travel.state.gov. 

HEALTHY LIVING FOR YOUR BRAIN AND BODY WITH CARRIE AMORIM GOOD: For centuries, we've known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.  

Registration is required for this event on Thursday, April 11th, at 6:30 PM. This is sponsored by Kimball Library, Rockingham County ServiceLink and the Alzheimer's Association.

About the presenter:  Carrie Amorim Good, MSW has worked in the areas of developmental disabilities, elder activities and engagement, and long-term care. She has worked for the Alzheimer’s Association, MA/NH Chapter, since 2017 and is currently the Program Coordinator for the state of New Hampshire. Her role includes providing the Alzheimer’s Association with core educational programs for people with memory impairment and their care partners and the public in NH. She also seeks to raise community awareness about Alzheimer’s and other dementias through community outreach efforts at health fairs and presentations to a variety of organizations and groups.

APRIL VACATION WEEK PREVIEW: The library will be hosting a myriad of events from April 22-26 if you’re enjoying a a ‘stay-cation’ and you and the kids will be in the area some or part of the time.  Here is a ‘sneak preview’ of what is to come.  ‘Create a Cartoon Strip’ (grades K-5), ‘Make a Collage’ (ages 2-6), ‘Cupcake Wars’ (t/weens grades 4 & up), ‘STEM Toys’ (all ages), ‘Beginner’s Puppetry’ (ages 10 & up), and Daniel Tiger Time (all ages).  If you can’t wait to read about it here in future articles, pop onto our website and view the April calendar.  Registration is already available and you can start planning now!

CREATE YOUR OWN GREETING CARDS: Join us in creating some lovely greeting cards. Using stamping and scrapbook techniques come learn how to create 8 beautiful cards to take home.
Kimball Library's own gifted scrapbooker, Cathie Piccolo will be instructing the class along with Lois Powers and will be providing materials, embellishments and support to make your own cards. Walk away with some unique cards to use the spring season on Friday, April 12th at 1:00 PM.

Registration is required and seating is limited. A non-refundable materials fee of $12.00 must be paid at time of registration. Stop in at the library and register today! Call for more information. If the class is full and additional class may be added. Wait listed individuals will be informed.

*If you are experienced at scrapbooking and wish to bring your own supplies (such as: adhesives and craft scissors) to work with please feel free.

PHOTOGRAPHY ON DISPLAY: Come check out the meeting room for that is wonderfully adorned with some originally-titled ‘ODD SHOTS’ photography.  Amateur photography, Ron Thimot from Atkinson, is exhibiting some of the photos that he has taken over a period of decades.  They don’t fit into some neat category or genre such as flowers, landscapes or portraits.  Instead, you’ll find an array of odd shot wonders to behold such as ‘Muddy Reflection’, ‘Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau’, ‘Haight Ashbury, or ‘Church and Barb Wire’. This selection is on display until May 1st.  Be sure to scope it out.

Kimball Library News 3/18/19


Money Smart Week runs from March 30 through April 6th.  Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances.

CUT THE CABLE IGNITE SE$$ION: Dish, Xfinity TV, DirecTV Now, Sling TV, YouTube TV, Sony PlayStation VUE and Hulu with Live TV … is your head spinning yet?  Do you just want to throw up your arms and go with a rabbit ear antenna? Well, you’re not alone. Join us for a panel session with a number of savvy Atkinson residents who took the initiative and cut their cable cord.  

Be here as Jennifer Silva, Wendy Barker, and Dena Fleno show you with mini presentations how to make this happen in your own home.  They will highlight their previous cable set up and the changes they made.  They will share the monetary savings they found following the switch.  They will discuss the pros and cons such as channels they have gained or lost.  There will be time for Q&A to ask specifics after each speaker has shown you her methods. This program is great for anyone considering cutting the cord as well as anyone who has already made the switch and would like to join in the discussion.

HOW MONEY WORK$: Join us for an informative session on 'How Money Works' on Thursday, April 4th, at 6:30 PM.  Learn the 7 steps to taking control of your personal finances, put your money to work for you so you don't have to work as hard for it.

About the presenter: David Shuker is a financial advisor working out of Nashua, New Hampshire, with a total of 25 years in the industry. Shuker is currently employed by Pfs Investments Inc. Over the course of his career, Shuker has held roles at Primerica Financial Services, Sch Admins Unit #55 (T. Rgnl. Sch Sys) and Pfs Investments Inc. Shuker has Series 63 and Series 65 licenses, certifying them as both a securities agent and an investment advisor representative, and is approved to advise clients in New Hampshire.

MEET THE AUTHOR, JOHN L. CARTIER: Meet the Author of ‘An Awesome Life of an Ordinary Man: A Life Sprinkled with Miracles’ on Monday, April 8th, at 6:30 PM.  Join us to hear John L. Cartier who, following retirement at the age of 80, decided to write an inspirational autobiography.  John will discuss how, after surviving colon cancer in 1999 and cancer of the larynx in 2016, while recovering, he wrote his book. He will discuss strategies he used to both write and publish his autobiography. There will be plenty of time for Q&A's and he will have copies of his book available for sale and to sign following his presentation. 

John L Cartier started working at the age of nine as a paper boy. He joined the Navy at age nineteen, married his high school sweetheart at the age of twenty, and was the father of five by age twenty-nine. When John was stricken with throat cancer in early 2016 at the age of eighty-four, he decided to write about his journey and the people and events that touched and changed his life. John lives in Haverhill MA, with Laura, his wife of sixty-five years. They are surrounded by their children, their fourteen grandchildren, their fifteen great grandchildren and their many friends.

Kimball Library News 3/11/19


Join us for a sketching & painting meetup starting in March on Fridays from 10:30 to 12:30. Group members choose their own medium to bring including: sketch pads, water color, pencils, canvas, paints, pencils and much more.

This group is for anyone interested in practicing or starting a sketchbook habit or dabbling in an art project. You'll find folks who just completed a 'Keeping a Sketchbook' class, as well as beginner to advanced artisans. All skill levels are welcome. Sketchbook & Art is currently scheduled through May 31st at which time a summer schedule will be determined by the group. *There will be no meetup on Friday, May 17th.

This casual, friendly group invites you to stay for all or part of the time allotted. It is a perfect time to have fun, unwind, de-stress and create. Please bring your own materials. Registration is required as it helps us to plan accordingly plus we can give you a friendly reminder that you have some time set aside JUST FOR YOU!

MARY POPPINS PARTY: Movies, Games, afternoon tea, and MORE!  Mark the date and register for this exciting event on Saturday, March 30th.  Please register for the event, even if you do not plan to stay for the entirety of the day.  

Practically perfect in every way, Mary Poppins is going to be celebrated at the Kimball Library. Young fans, new fans and old fans, bring a packed lunch and join us for a full day of movies, activities and maybe some surprises too!

Join us for an informative session on Home Equity Line of Credit and how it works on Monday, April 1st, from 6-8 PM.  This date and topic is NOT an April Fool’s joke!

Come to learn and find answers to questions such as: Which is better: a home equity loan or a line of credit? How do you pay back a home equity line of credit? Are home equity lines of credit a good idea? Are there closing costs on a home equity line of credit? Can one utilize the equity available in your home to finance certain items such as: home improvements or home repairs, refinance options, vacation home, college tuition and debt consolidation?

2nd ANNUAL ‘LITERARY’ ART CONTEST:  This year’s theme is ‘Create a Character’!  Youth in grade school (Grades K-12) are encouraged to participate.

Put your creativity and reading together! Pick out any character that can be found in a book within the children's department and make a piece of artwork depicting that character. Use paper, paints, crayons, clay, markers, or any other type art medium to make your own version of the character. Work on it at home, at school, or anywhere you feel creative!  Spend hours or weeks perfecting your art work. It can be an exact copy of the book cover or your own unique take.

Submissions will be displayed in Kimball's youth department during school vacation week April 22nd through the 26th. Youth in grades K through 12 visiting the library anytime during that week will be able to vote for their favorite entries. There will also be independent judging. Prizes will be awarded with a celebratory art exhibit for all participants on Monday, April 29th from 6:00 to 7:00PM. Contestants need not be present to win, although we encourage participation.

Please register in person for this contest at the Kimball Library with your intent to compete. Card carrying youth or their caregivers may sign up any person in grades K through 12 for this contest. Children or t/weens are required to complete the artwork independently. Please submit the character name and author of the book(s) the character appears in along with your name, age with your artwork submission. Sign up and artwork submission deadline is Friday, April 19th
