STAR WARS: Calling all Star Wars fans, junkies, and cult members!  On Tuesday, April 5th, we are showing Star Wars Episode VII “The Force Awakens” at 1pm (no registration necessary) and again at 6pm (register PLEASE).  Popcorn will be made in advance and the popper shut down so we need a head count for the 2nd show to be prepared for our guests.  Please note this film is rated PG 13 and we do not restrict ages.  Children under the age of 10 may not be left unattended.

It’s hard to believe, but spring vacation break is right around the corner for the Timberlane District, and we have plenty of events planned for the youth in your life.  If your idea of vacation is staycation, then the Kimball Library has plans for your children and teens. See below and stay tuned for the rest of the week next week!

FOAM FUN FOR EVERYONE: Register children in grades K-5 for foam and paper crafting. We have some foam and paper kits that can be put together easily and some foam you must design yourself. We don't expect to supervise your child for the full time but they are welcome to stay in the children's room on Monday, April 25th, between 4-5:30pm as long as they can focus on the activity and have a good time. Younger children may need help.

CRAFTING A TREASURE CHEST: We have darling unfinished treasure chests for your little ones ages 2-6.  Decorate your treasure chest on Tuesday, April 26th at 10:30am and take it home. Hide your goodies inside!  Registration is required as we have a specific amount of chests.

GET IN THE GAME CUPCAKE WARS: Register Grades 4-12 for Tuesday, April 26th, 6:30-7:45pm!  Each participant must prepare 6 un-decorated cupcakes prior to the event.  You must bring all your decorating tools and supplies that you will need.  AT the event, you’ll have 30 minutes to decorate them all. Two of the cupcakes will be used for judging—the other portion will be shared with other contestants and judges.  Cupcakes will be judged on the following criteria: Appearance, taste, creativity, clean station, and presentation to judges. Participant may make any flavor of cupcake desired but, please stay within the theme of the event ‘GET IN THE GAME” in anticipation of summer reading events!

The winner will get a ‘sweet’ prize.  Parents, this is for kids and supposed to be fun and not highly competitive.  The t/weens are expected to do their own baking and decorating.

QUESTIONS?  ASK Kathy Watson.  This event is in partnership with Bre’s Ice Creamery! Sweet!

T/WEEN T-SHIRT BOOK BAGS: Get the key to cool with an awesome DIY t-shirt book bag.  We'll be making t-shirt totes on Wednesday, April 27th, at 6:30pm that will have you styling and the envy of all your friends.

You MUST bring--at least ONE t-shirt that would be large enough for books.  (I'm sure you'll have time to make more than one, so the more you bring the better!) AND a positive I CAN DO IT attitude.

You CAN bring--fabric scissors, (the more sharp fabric scissors everyone brings the less waiting around time for everyone), embellishments (safety pins, pony beads, ribbon--anything you can attach to your bag) AND friends.  Please ALL register participants so I know how many peeps to plan for.  This is for grades 4-12, only.

I CAN’T DIE BUT ONCE – HARRIET TUBMAN’S CIVIL WAR: Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti's characterization of Harriet Tubman is a lucid, well-researched biography about the remarkable life of an enduring warrior. As Harriet Tubman, she weaves a tale of truth, pain, courage and determination in the quagmire of racial exploitation. The United States Government enlisted Tubman as a scout and spy for the Union cause and she battled courageously behind enemy lines during the Civil War, but Tubman is best known for her role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Though she is one of the most famous women in our nation's history, we have come to know her life through fictionalized biographies written for school children. Quezaire-Presutti separates reality from myth to reconstruct a richer and far more accurate historical account of Tubman's life.

Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti has combined her expertise in public speaking and interest in conducting historical research with her passion for storytelling and dramatic performance. Quezaire-Presutti studied under Professor Lloyd Barbee at the University of Wisconsin and has been a committed scholar of African American Studies, in particular women of color. She is listed on the Performing Artist roster at the Connecticut Historical Society Museum, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, and the Social Theatre with Young Audiences of Connecticut Arts for Learning. She received the Institute of Texan Cultures' Director's Award for Excellence, the Greater Hartford Arts Council/ Boston Fund Individual Artist Fellowship, and first place in the International Toastmaster Award competition for Interpretive Reading.

Free and open to the public on Thursday, April 16th, from 6:30-8:00pm, this program is made possible by a grant from the NH Humanities Council and the Friends of the Kimball Library.

LYME PREVENTION AWARENESS: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vectorborne illness in the United States. In 2014, it was the fifth most common Nationally Notifiable disease.  Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.

Join us on Thursday, April 7, from 6-8pm as David Hunter, a long-time Lyme disease advocate, Co-Chairman of the Bedford Lyme Disease Council and facilitator for the Greater Manchester Lyme Disease Support Group, talks about Lyme Disease Awareness and Prevention.   He will discuss causes, prevention, symptoms, testing, co-infections, treatment as well as the impact that Lyme disease has on children and learning. Lyme disease cases continue to grow and the disease can now be found nationwide but is most prevalent in the Northeast, upper Midwest and Northern California.

This evening of public awareness is free and open to the public.  Invite your friends and neighbors to attend as well.

MAKE AN EARTH DAY NECKLACE: Earth Day is coming soon and wearing an Earth Day necklace or bracelet will be the perfect reminder of protecting our earth. Children in grades K-5 may join us on Saturday, April 16th at 11am to make this item that they’ll be able to wear with pride! Register your children now for this fun project so we’ll have enough supplies.

CYBER-CRIME PREVENTION: Seniors and other adults are encouraged to join us at 1pm on Tuesday, March 22nd at 1pm to hear Greg Page discuss cyber-crime for seniors.

This seminar begins with a broad overview of topics such as phishing scams, malicious software, identity theft risks, social engineering, and much more.  Then, with data gathered from recent, real-life examples, as well as contemporary information provided directly by the FBI, hear about the most current trends, tactics, and procedures in use by cyber-criminals who target seniors on-line.  Finally, learn about several strategies for preventing and mitigating instances of cyber-crime, as well as initial steps to take if you believe you already are a cyber-crime victim.

Greg Page, CEO and co-founder of Merrimack Analysis Group. He holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University (2003) and a B.A. from Stanford University (2002).  Motivated by the attacks of Sept. 11, Greg joined the US Navy as an Intelligence Officer.  He served three overseas tours supporting ground units in Iraq before deciding to transfer his commission over to the Army.  Greg is now a Captain in the United States Army Reserve, and an Adjunct Computer Science Lecturer at Boston University – Metropolitan College.

WHO’S TRACKING YOU ONLINE?:  Come back in the evening of March 22nd at 6:30pm to get even more information from Greg Page regarding ‘The Quiet Big Data Revolution’ or ‘Who’s Tracking You Online’?

Every mouse click, every keystroke, and every tablet or smart phone selection that we make helps data collectors paint a picture about who we are. The digital footprints that individuals quietly and slowly create with this data trail can be useful to everyone from retailers to health care professionals to the government. During this interactive presentation, we will talk about the positive, negative, and uncertain implications of the era of Big Data, to include critical issues surrounding individual privacy and security. We will also discuss ways that individual web users can minimize their online footprint.

Greg and Todd Kobus, CTO and co-founder of the Merrimack Analysis Group were deployed together in Kabul for most of 2011. During their time overseas, they were asked to develop a comprehensive Operational Security (OPSEC) brief that could be used by unit Intelligence Officers throughout Afghanistan to their troops. They saw how frequently misunderstandings about social media were getting soldiers in trouble, and, much worse, potentially jeopardizing the safety of themselves and their comrades.

After returning to the U.S. in early 2012, Greg and Todd noticed news stories on a near-daily basis describing the ways in which simple misunderstandings on the part of web users created significant problems in their careers, personal lives, and job searches. Recognizing this widespread problem: The speed at which people’s lives have migrated into the online realm has far outpaced our society’s ability to understand the meaning of that change, they decided to act and the Merrimack Analysis Group was soon formed.

LAST CALL for T/WEEN BIG BUDDIES: This event will be happening for 6 consecutive weeks on Wednesdays from 4-5pm beginning March 16th and ending on April 20th. Each week teens (youth in grades 6-12) will be assigned to children that are kindergarten age through grade 3.  Library buddies will read or be read to for the first 30 minutes followed by puzzles, games, and/or coloring activities.  This is a great opportunity for the younger set to practice listening to books of their choice or for emerging readers to try out their skills on an older buddy.

Want to be a buddy?  We need your t/weens in grades 6-12 to participate and experience the joy of being a literary encourager or participant.  You may register on the online calendar icon on the website, call (603) 362-5234 x224, or drop in and personally speak to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director.  All interested big buddies must speak with Kathy directly and be committed to an early arrival time.  Atkinson residents have priority.
