Kimball Library News 6/25/23

Time to dust off your sewing machine and get back into the creative mood.  Join instructor, Darlene Irving as she leads another fun and educational sewing session.  In this 3-week class, you will learn to make a July Tote Bag.  Both practical and stylist the tote is 15” x 12” with a zippered pocket on the front and two elasticated pockets on the sides perfect for water bottles and cell phone. Plus, it has a recessed zippered top closure for security.

A list of materials for the project (i.e. fabric, thread, basic tools ...) will be provided prior to class.  Then just bring your materials and your sewing machine and get started.  This is a meet up / sew up group geared towards those who already have basic sewing machine skills.  Class size is limited so sign up today. 

This class will meet on July 12th, 19th, and 26th from 12:30 to 2:30 PM.

Instructor, Darlene Irving has been sewing for over 40 years and enjoys sharing her love of sewing with others.

3-D PRINTING WITH TOYSINBOX: Toysinbox is here to teach you how to create 3D objects that you can take home! Each participant will be given hands-on experience with the software and make a multi-color mini 3-D object of their own creation. Due to the popularity of this event, we are offering two sessions.

Register grades 1-3 for 5:00 PM and grades 4-6 for 6:00 PM. For families with children in two separate groups, we can make some adjustments.

This is an All Together Now summer reading event sponsored by The Friends of Kimball Library.

CODING & ROBOTICS: Calling all future engineers! Children entering grades 1-3 in the fall are encouraged to join Gail Ramsay (Code & Circuit, Amesbury) and Kathy Watson (Kimball Library) for some coding fun! We will be utilizing Kodable, Osmo, and iRoot robots. Beginners are welcome as well as those with coding experience.

*Due to the limited number of spaces and high interest, a $10 deposit is required for each child to register. Deposits will be refunded when your child attends the class.

Please register in-person at the Children's Desk. We have two sessions available on Tuesday, July 11th. Youth entering grades 1-3 in the fall have class from 3:00-5:00 PM. T/weens entering grades 4-8 have class from 5:30-7:30 PM.

This is an "All Together Now" summer reading event sponsored by generous Friends of the Kimball Library.

LINDSAY’S PUPPET PALS: Lindsay’s funny, fast-paced, and highly interactive variety show delights the young and the young at heart! Kids will meet several larger-than-life, hand-crafted puppets... perhaps a goofy moose, a heroic tiger or a lovable bear. Oh my! Maybe a dancing robot or flamingo, an adorable mouse, a stubborn goat, a shy dragon or a singing dinosaur! Come find out who's making an appearance this time!

Lindsay has been performing full-time since 2011, entertaining to several thousand children each year. Through animated storytelling and thoughtful messaging, she hopes to inspire creative play, resilience and empathy in even the youngest. She also believes shared joy and laughter strengthen communities.

This program is a great fit for families with children ages 3-8 and the young at heart. Registration is required.

Kimball Library News 6/18/23

ALL TOGETHER TEEN BOOK DISCUSSION: Join the coolest and sweetest teens (from all the candy we devour) to chat about the July 5th book, ‘All My Rage’ by Sabaa Tahir. Books are available for check-out at the main circ desk, and t/weens signed up for summer reading will receive a raffle ticket just for taking the book home.

‘All My Rage’ is a love story, a tragedy and an infectious teenage fever dream about what home means when you feel you don't fit in. Noor, who was born in Pakistan but emigrated as a child after her family was killed in a tragic accident, yearns for a culture that she never got a chance to fully know.

Register to join us, but teenage drop-ins are also welcome.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES: Trombones are front and center in 2Slick, a unique jazz group. Featuring trombonists Steve Piermarini and Wayne Branco, with pianist John Arcaro, bassist Stephan Arsenault and drummer Mark Branco, the band plays the music of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding as well as many original arrangements. 

In case of rain, the concert will be moved inside the spacious Atkinson Fire Department. Folding chairs will be set up in the Fire Station but you may also bring your own folding chairs. We suggest that in the event of rain, you check the Library website for updates.

Register to be reminded or notified of a change to this event happening on Thursday, July 6th starting at 6:00 PM. Invite your friends and neighbors!

ALL TOGETHER FORT BUILDING: Build yourself a reading fort on Thursday, July 6th between 2:00 and 4:30 PM! We have blankets, building blocks, chairs and pillows so come on down and build a cozy nook for yourself.

Kids under 10 can build in the Craft Barn. T/weens 10+ can build in the Atkinson Room (AKA Teen Room).

Registration is not necessary for this event. You are welcome to bring some of your own supplies. Stay part of the time or all of the time.

This is an 'ALL TOGETHER NOW' Summer Reading event.

ALL TOGETHER STEAM: Join us for an easy going STEAM program for kids grades K-3.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month and work on a project using common items and have some fun challenges using whatever we have created for the day.

This month, on July 8th learn how to blow up balloons with baking soda and stay for an epic water balloon fight!

LIBRARY LOOK & FIND: Can you find the toys hidden in the Children's Room? Stop in on Fridays from 1:00-4:00 PM and see if you can spot them for a prize!

Registration is not required for this program. Come when you can, leave when you must.

LIBRARY PAGE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Do you like to organize things with great detail? Are you self-motivated and creative? Library Pages shelve and merchandize materials, wait on customers at the Circulation Desk and work on posters and social media posts. This year-round position is an excellent opportunity for high-school students who are at least 15 years old. The shifts are on fixed evenings (5:00 to 8:00 PM) plus 2 Saturdays a month (9:30 AM to 3 PM) - an average of 8.5 hours a week. The wage is $13.50/hour. Preference given to Atkinson residents. Reliable transportation to the Library is required.

FEMALE DISRUPTIONS - STORIES OF MIGHTY FEMALE SCIENTISTS: After discovering that children were getting sick and dying from rare cancers in her small town, Mindi Messmer led the charge to uncover environmental issues that were poisoning the drinking water and environment. She exposed the high rates of cancer in her town and across the state. She worked to prevent cancer and chronic disease and hold polluters accountable for environmental issues with science, science-based policy and advocacy. Join us on Thursday, June 29th at 6:00 PM as Messmer discusses her book Female Disruptors: Stories of Mighty Female Scientists.

Messmer is an environmental and regulatory scientist. She has an M.S. in clinical and translational science from Georgetown University. After seeing the environmental impact on children in her community, she was prompted to run for and hold a seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Through her extensive work in science and politics, she has influenced the discourse on environmental protections, cancer prevention, and science-based policy.

Messmer will have copies of her book available for purchase for those interested.

ALL TOGETHER FRISBEE with Todd Brodeur: Two-time Freestyle Frisbee Champion, Todd Brodeur educates, entertains, and motivates his audience with captivating Frisbee shows and interactive playshops. He promotes staying active throughout your life by playing disc sports. He focuses on healthy lifestyles, creativity, flexibility and balance, all aimed at improving self-esteem and confidence. World Class Frisbee Shows and Playshops teaches the next generation new ways to learn Frisbee skills that increase hand-eye coordination, fun and success while exercising.

Frisbee flipping has been part of American pop culture for over 50 years. Across the globe, the popularity of Frisbee sports has never been greater. Now you and your group can watch a master of the craft and also learn and improve your freestyle skills. This simple space age object will bring fun and excitement to any group or class. Students will be inspired to play more Frisbee, be active, be self-aware and continue to discover.

This event being held on Wednesday, June 28th is developmentally for ages 8 and up – or those entering grade 3 and higher in the fall. Tweens and teens will love it! We encourage the adults of the attendees to stay for the show and participate in the playshop. Please register all youth and adults who will be in attendance.

It’s important to note that we will meet at the Atkinson Academy gym (side doors). Register early to avoid disappointment, and please register for summer reading as a whole.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX (Fridays 10-12): Calling all kids who like to build - come try out our challenges! Can you make a bridge out of Keva planks? What about an entire city made out of rainbow snap blocks? How high can you build a tower using just paper plates and cups? Each week we'll have different materials and STEM toys to work with and a different challenge to work on.

Registration is not required for this program. Stop in on Fridays between 10:00-12:00 PM and leave when you must. This is an 'ALL TOGETHER NOW' Summer Reading event.

Kimball Library News 6/4/23

Get out your calendar because we have so many summer activities planned for so many different ages!

ALL TOGETHER BUBBLES with Melissa Bormann: Register and join us for a spectacular bubble show in the Library Courtyard on Monday, June 26th at 6:00 PM! You will be amazed at the shapes, sizes and quantities of bubbles! It's time for some bubble love to connect with the summer theme of kindness, friendship, and unity. Melissa has spent the last few years building her vast collection of bubble props to bring you an unforgettable experience.

About the Artist: Melissa is an entertainer, actor, teacher, singer, and bubbleologist captivating audiences with her bubble magic, bringing her signature energy to all aspects of her shows.

This is an "All Together Now" Summer Reading event sponsored by our amazing Friends of Kimball Library.

ALL TOGETHER CUPCAKE WARS: Teens and tweens, THIS MEANS WAR!  (FRIENDLY war. :)

T/weens (Grade 5+) are welcome to participate. Please bake your own cupcakes in advance, and practice your decorating in the days prior if you choose.

As the event starts, you will have 30 minutes to frost and decorate your three cupcakes in any way you choose. The theme is "ALL TOGETHER NOW" named after the 2023 Summer Reading Theme. A small prize will be awarded. There is only one winner so you cannot compete in pairs.

PARTICIPATION RULES~

1. Anyone can participate who is entering grades 5-12 in the fall.
2. Each participant must prepare 6 UN-decorated cupcakes prior to the event. You must bring all your decorating tools and the supplies that you will need. Cupcakes can be from a box mix, from scratch, or a combination. More effort will please the judges.
3. At the event, you'll have 30 minutes to decorate 3 cupcakes. (You bring 6 in case you make a goof.) The judges will be cutting ONE of your best 3 to taste. The other two will be put on 'display.'
4. Cupcake participants will judge the final results on presentation, creativity, effort, taste, and how well the cupcakes fit the theme 'ALL TOGETHER NOW' in anticipation of Summer Reading events!
5. Because of Covid, we are reluctant to have participants share their cupcakes with anyone other than the judges in the Library. We are sad about this, too.

PARENTS: This event is FOR t/weens. Please allow them to do their own baking with minimal supervision (we understand about ovens!) This should be friendly, fun, and not fiercely competitive. The joy is in the journey!

ROCKY SHORES with UNH Docents: The UNH Docents are back - this time with their program Rocky Shores!

Spanning the area between the low and high tide lines, the intertidal zone of the rocky shore of the New England seacoast is an ecological treasure trove of organisms whose survival is challenged by a variety of extreme conditions including crashing waves, hours of exposure to air, temperature and salinity fluctuations, and predation from both land and sea. Yet even in these conditions, there is a rich variety of marine organisms that have adapted well to this ecosystem.

Children entering grades 1-5 in the fall are invited to register join us to learn all about these special ecosystems taking place on Tuesday, June 27th at 4:00 PM.

Kimball Library News 5/28/23

At last, the SUMMER READING KICK-OFF EVENT has arrived!

ALL TOGETHER MAGIC with PETER BOIE: 60 minutes of belief-challenging, wonderment-enhancing, imagination-inducing, harmonica-appearing, reality-altering, destiny-predicting, ghost-contacting, magic show that will make you gasp in awe, laugh 'til it hurts, and inspire your imagination! All ages enjoy magic!

Belief Optional.

This event will be held at Atkinson Academy if we have inclement weather. Please register so we can easily notify you.

This show was generously paid for by The Elizabeth Smith Estate and will be taking place on Wednesday, June 21st at 6:15 PM.

MAGICAL WORKSHOP with PETER BOIE: Learn magic tricks with the amazing magician Peter Boie before the big show! The workshop will be from 5:00-6:00 PM.

Peter Boie, the magician for non-believers, teaches simple magic tricks to help increase confidence and improve communication skills in this hour long hands on workshop...plus, it's just fun to fool your friends and family with your newfound magical knowledge.

This workshop has limited seating and is limited to youth ages 8 & up. Registration is required and all seats (25) will be filled. Kimball Library families have priority.

This is an "All Together Now" Summer Reading event and was paid for by The Elizabeth Smith Estate.

COURTYARD CONCERT STUDIO TWO: Studio Two, now entering their 11th year of touring, is a headlining Beatles tribute band featuring Berklee College of Music Alums who focus on the most exciting, energetic early years (1962 - 1966). Choosing from a catalog of number one hit songs from their club and touring performances, Studio Two captures all of the excitement of the danceable 50's and 60's Rock 'n' Roll songs The Beatles helped popularize. All of this is done in attire and with equipment of the period. You will be transported in time!

FRIENDSHIP ROCKS:  Friendship rocks are a wonderful way to make someone smile. Kids entering grades 3 and up on Thursday, June 22nd at 4:00 PM are invited to join us to decorate rocks to place around town or hand out to loved ones. Each participant will receive a handful of rocks to decorate with markers and paint. Register to spread the love!

*Younger children welcome as long as parents understand we are using acrylic paints that may stain clothes.

COOL JEWELRY TIME: Looking for something new to wear? Make a crafty bracelet for the summer. This will be perfect to add to your Independence Day swag as well.

Please register preschool children to grade 3 to join Mrs. Birr on Saturday morning at 10:15 on June 17 for some red, white, and blue crafty fun.

ALL TOGETHER NOW TOT TALES: Revving up for the summer we have drop-in storytimes for preschool age. Choose one or choose them all if they are developmentally appropriate. Older siblings are allowed to join in if they are willing participants.

Mother Goose (Mondays @10:15): Infants through age 3 with their caregivers are invited to join us for simple stories, rhymes, finger plays, and songs modeling after the Mother Goose curriculum. Please feel welcome to stay after the session to allow for playtime and socializing for all ages.

Bitty Books (Tuesdays @10:15): Children ages 3-6 with their caregivers are invited to join us for itty bitty stories, rhymes, finger plays or songs and simple crafts

Sensory Storytime (Thursdays @10:15): Some story times are too long! Some classes are too easy. Sensory Story Time is just right for your little one who is almost ready for full story time but may still be challenged by so much structure. Join us for one story, followed by an opportunity to play with sensory and art activities that reinforce what was heard in the story. Younger children are welcome as long as parents & caregivers are aware there may be small parts involved.

CREATIVE COLORING: Kids of all ages are invited to join us in the Craft Barn to color on Tuesdays between 12-3 PM starting on June 20th! Coloring is a soothing pastime that anyone can do. Take some time to chill and create something beautiful with your family. We'll have coloring pages, water-colors, and other media for you to use.

Registration is not required for this program. Come anytime between 12:00- 3:00 PM and leave when you must.
