Kimball Library News 10/28/13

Can you hear the gobbling?  It's nearing Thanksgiving time, but we're serving turkey cookies on Monday, November 18, from 4-5pm! If you are between the ages of 5 and 10, come make yourself a special treat! You'll be sure to 'gobble' them up they're so good!  Please register your little ones before it’s too late and the cookies disappear.

Bubble, bubbles - come one, come all!  We are so excited to be hosting – ‘Bubbleology: The Secret World of Bubbles’ on Saturday, November 23rd, from 1:00-2:00pm.  As featured on the Discovery Channel, USA Today, Real Simple Family, American Profile, National Geographic TV...  You can learn a lot from a bubble.

Keith Johnson’s BUBBLEOLOGY—‘The Secret World of Bubbles’ is packed with state-of-the-art bubble sculptures that snare the attention of your audience.  The science behind the magic unfolds like a mystery, making this show both educational and unforgettable.

How lucky are we that liquids, solids & gasses, geometry, history, tension, pressure, soap films etc all relate directly to the curriculum of K-5th grade students?  From encasing a dinosaur and then a kid in a bubble to crafting a glistening fog-filled Eiffel Tower, these sculptures are full of memorable science lessons. The world around us is a fascinating place.  Science and art allow us to explore the world in meaningful ways.

Register *ALL AGES* for BUBBLEOLOGY, please.

Bubbles are always, all at once, everything they could possibly be. ~Keith Johnson

The 9th Annual Peddlers Market will be held on Saturday, November 2, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  Like every year, this is a shopping experience you won’t want to miss.

The Friends of Kimball Library are proud to present their 9th annual Peddlers Market. They are pleased to support Yankee ingenuity and the entrepreneurial spirit to present their largest representation of high-quality contemporary and traditional artisans, crafters, and purveyors of fine foods.  This year’s event promises to be bigger and better with holiday gift items for everyone on your list.  Please take note that even now there are many beautiful raffle baskets prepared and you may buy tickets at Kimball Library even before the event. Don’t be enslaved to the mall or gift cards—buy the unusual!  Free admission, free parking, and an opportunity to do your holiday shopping will all be under one roof.

The location of this fine event is at Dyke Auditorium at Historic Atkinson Academy, 17 Academy Avenue, Atkinson, NH. (Off Route 121, next to Atkinson Town Hall).

Another exciting event coming up soon is a Veterans' Day Program - Richard Rubin, author of ‘The Last of the Doughboys: The Forgotten Generation and Their Forgotten World War (WWI)’ is the presenter.

In 2003, 85 years after the armistice, it took Richard Rubin months to find just one living American veteran of World War One.  But then he found another.  And another.  Eventually he managed to find dozens, aged 101 to 113, and interview them.  All are gone now.

His decade-long odyssey led him across the United States and France, through archives, private collections, and battlefields, literature, propaganda, and even music. But at the center of it all were the last of the last, the men and women he met—several dozen, aged 101 to 113, all of whom have now passed away.

They include: a new immigrant, drafted and sent to France, whose life was saved by a horse; a Connecticut Yankee who volunteered and fought in every major American battle; a Cajun artilleryman nearly killed by a German airplane; an 18 year old Bronx girl 'drafted' to work for the War Department; the 16 year old who became America's last World War One veteran; and many, many more.

You won't want to miss this informative program on Thursday, November 8, from 6:30-8:00pm sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. Refreshments will be served.

“The head bone connected to the neck bone,
The neck bone connected to the back bone,
The back bone connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone connected to the knee bone,
The knee bone connected to the leg bone,
The leg bone connected to the foot bone…”

Make no bones about it, this 'joint is jumpin'!' Come to a skeleton connection where we'll put the bones in all the right places. These fun, moveable skeletons are quick and easy to make, and we'll learn some 'bone-ified' facts about the body at the same time. This activity is for children ages 6-9 or in grades 1-3.  Make sure you register your children so they get a seat.  Mmmmm... bones! Bon appetite for a 'special kiddie-bone' treat!

It’s a ghostly, ghastly time of year and we’ve got a special event planned all about NH cemeteries and gravestones.  Be sure to mark your calendar for Monday, October 28, from 6:30-8:00pm so that you will not be left out in the cold, dark night.

Rubbings, photographs, and slides illustrate the rich variety of gravestones to be found in our own neighborhoods, but they also tell long-forgotten stories of such historical events as the Great Awakening, the Throat Distemper epidemic, and the American Revolution. Find out more about these deeply personal works of art and the craftsmen who carved them with Glenn Knoblock, and learn how to read the stone “pages” that give insight into the vast genealogical book of New Hampshire.

About the Presenter, Glenn Knoblock:
B.A. in History, Bowling Green State University; independent scholar and author of twelve books and over 70 articles; author and historian on projects relating to Northern New England bridges, New Hampshire history and African American military history; serving as the main military contributor to Harvard and Oxford University's landmark African American Biography Project.

This program is from a grant by the NH Humanities Council.  It is sponsored by the Atkinson Historical Society.  Refreshments will be served.

Here’s a haunting little reminder that we have an evening story time on Friday nights at 6:30 for ages 4-8.  Bring the little ones in their pajamas for PJ Peeps.  Story and snack are included.  J

Registration is required for this special event as well as supplying one apple topping to share (per family).  This is a family event--please register all participants including adults.  Children may not be left to attend on their own.  Suggested toppings for you to bring include, but are not limited to, the following ideas: chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, crushed Oreos, honey roasted peanuts, pretzel pieces, or chopped Butterfingers.  Be creative and come up with a new one to add to the list!

The Affordable Care Act enrollment period begins October 1, 2013.  Do you have any questions such as: What does it mean for you and your family?  If yes, we have just the event for you.

Join us on November 6th from 6:30 – 8:00pm when a representative from AARP will do a presentation on the ACA and how it affects citizens of all ages.  The speaker will highlight some of the key elements of the law related to insurance coverage, timelines for enrollment, and facts on how sign up through the Health Insurance Marketplace.  The presentation will end with a 30 minute Q&A session and participants will walk away with a handout of helpful resources.  Space is limited to Atkinson residents and seating is limited, so don’t delay and sign up soon.

The story hour enrollment period expands and continues!  Due to the popularity of our preschool classes, we are adding an additional ‘Kiddie Lit’ class to the mix on Friday mornings at 11:30am.  The first available session started on October 11, 2013. Crafts, music, rhyme, new friends and adventures into literacy will be found during these classes geared for children ages 3-6.  This class with Miss Celeste will be organized thematically and you’ll be able to look online to see what the general theme for the day is.

Do take note that we also have classes for that same age grouping on Tuesdays at 11:30am, Thursdays at 10:15am, and Fridays at 10:15am. If you sign up for any of these time slots, we consider you registered through the month of December.  Please send us an email or call if you cannot attend.  You may be taking a space away from someone else.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Please be aware that the library will be closed on Monday, October 14, for Columbus Day Observed.  If you take a two day loan out on Friday the 11th, it will not be due until Tuesday the 15th.
