Kimball Library News 12/25/12

We are very fortunate to have some beautiful photography by Ron Wybranowski currently being displayed in the library.  Ron is a serious amateur photographer just starting to publicly display his work. His primary focus is on nature photography, with a goal of capturing singular images of the beautiful scenery, flowers, birds and animals which surround us all.

Recently he has been influenced by the impressionist photography of William Neill, who writes for Outdoor Photographer and lives on the doorstep of Yosemite National Park.  Neill wrote, "The images that I enjoy making the most are those that rely on emotional response and perception rather than the spectacle of the scene. I enjoy isolating the details of a scene, often to the point of abstraction."  It is a style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve an accurate representation.

The techniques used are very long exposures, sometimes aided by multiple neutral density filters, and panning the camera either horizontally or vertically to gather the sweep of the scene.  The subject matter remains much the same: sunrise, sunset, the seashore, forests and fall foliage. This impressionistic approach requires new "eyes" to see a final image which evokes a much more emotional response. The 10 images in this exhibit are the result of those efforts.

Ron has very generously offered us to raffle one of his photographs from the exhibit.  The winner can pick which photo they would like and he will mat & frame a 16X 20 for them.  Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  The winner will be drawn on Monday, February 4th at 3:00 PM.  All proceeds go to the Friends of the Kimball Library for library events and programs.

Do you want to know the best way to be excited about the cold month of January?   Put the Jack Frost Jamboree on your calendar.  We’ll have fun that will warm you right down to your toes!  It’s exciting for children and adults that the 3rd Annual Jack Frost Jamboree is right around the corner. It will be great competing in games and winning prizes, creating winter crafts, stomping on the hill with snowshoes provided by EMS (11am-1pm weather permitting), playing miniature golf in the stacks, eating hot dogs and popcorn, drinking hot chocolate, and greeting old friends!  Once again we’ll have crafts, games, and face painting for the kids.  We have a toasty treat in store outside that’s sure to please. (Think marshmallows and chocolate...)   We’ll have a new penguin-themed golf course winding through the stacks as well as refreshments for most of the day.   This spectacular family event will take place on Saturday, January 26st, from 10:30am-2:30pm even though our doors will be open for our usual Saturday hours (10am-3pm).  Take advantage of the flurry of activities and stop by for all or part of the day.  This fun and frosty event is sponsored by ‘The Friends of Kimball Library’.

Preschool parents—please remember that there are no classes the week of Christmas or New Years.  All the preschool classes (Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, and Kiddie Lit) will resume the week of January 6th.  Due to the popularity of our preschool classes, starting in January of 2013 we are adding an additional ‘Kiddie Lit’ slot to the mix on Friday mornings.  The first available class is on January 11, 2013. Crafts, music, rhyme, new friends and adventures into literacy will be found during these classes geared for children ages 3-6.  Try this new class time starring our newest youth services teacher, Miss Celeste!  Her class will be organized thematically and you’ll be able to look online to see what the general theme for the day is.  Classes will be held on Fridays from 10:15-11:00am. If you sign up, we consider you registered for the entire session.  Children who registered in the fall for any of our preschool classes are still considered registered unless you have asked to remove them, so if you attend a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday class and plan to continue, you do not need to register your child again for that.

Start the new year right with a commitment or a re-commitment to book discussion.  That’s what resolutions are all about, right?  You can come in and get a book for any discussion.  In January we are hosting the following:
~Tweens (grades 5-8) on January 2 will be discussing ‘When you Reach Me’ by Rebecca Stead.
~Teens (grades 9-12) on January 9 will be discussing ‘Looking for Alaska’ by John Green.
~Evening adults on January 15 at 6pm will be discussing ‘Destiny of the Republic’ by Candace Millard.
~Morning adults on January 23 at 10:15am will be choosing books for the year in their December gathering.  Please call the library and ask for the title after December 26th.
~Brown bag book clubbers on January 28 at 5:30pm will be discussing ‘Eve of the Emperor Penguin’ by Mary Pope Osborne

Start 2013 on the right note by giving your child some musical education!  Come Meet the Flute’!  In this introductory series of classes we will have fun while developing musical thinking and listening skills.  We'll play lots of musical games and find out how the flute makes its sound.  This is a hands-on active class that requires caretaker and child participation.  This is a 3 week commitment and is by registration only.

We are offering 2 distinct sessions of this class.  Tootie Flutes I is geared for children ages 3-5 and is from 2:00-2:30pm.  Tootie Flutes II is for children ages 5-7 and is from 3:30-4:00pm.    Musician and teacher, Judy Teehan, will be instructing the classes.  ***When you register, you are enrolling for 3 consecutive Wednesdays at the same time.  This is a requirement for signing up.

Please be aware that the library will be closed for a few days during the holiday season.  We are closed for Christmas on both December 24 and 25, but we will be open for limited hours New Year’s Eve (10am-3pm) on December 31, and closed for New Year’s Day – January 1.  Happy holidays to all our fantastic customers regardless of what traditions you are celebrating!

You will probably be ready to take a little vacation after the flurry of the holidays, and we have just the place for you to try.  Mark your calendar for Tuesday, January 15th at 6:30pm to travel to the Galapagos Islands.  Journey down to the equator and explore Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands through the camera lens of Dennis Krause.  He and his wife recently visited the Galapagos with Lindblad Expeditions for an adventure of a lifetime.   Their voyage aboard the National Geographic “Islander” traveled to seven different islands home to many species of mammals, reptiles and birds.   Each island was inhabited by a unique group of creatures ranging from playful sea lions and sea turtles to primitive marine iguanas and giant tortoises to colorful blue-footed boobies and magnificent frigate birds.  Follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and see up close and personal what he observed years ago and what makes the Galapagos Islands the very special place it is today.  Join Dennis and his visual presentation of his day to day experiences on this ageless group of islands…The Galapagos.  Refreshments will be served on this unique travel odyssey and, as most library events are - this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

Mah Jong Mondays has been such a popular event on Monday afternoons that you may be dying to get in on the action.  Our initial fall class was so full we had a waiting list.  Now the newbies are not so new and we have added a few more games so we can take a few more registrations.  The class size will increase starting January 7th, but you can register now by going online or by giving us a call.  The games are played every Monday afternoon that we are open from 1:00-4:30pm.  For those who play each week, please note Mah Jong will not be in session on either Dec 24th or 31st.  See you in 2013!

Whether you are a novice or an experienced Mah Jong player, come join the fun!  We have someone who is willing to teach you to play if you never have had the experience.  Cozy up in the meeting room of the library, share some laughs, and make some new friends.  All experience levels are welcome.  We hope this will bring some people in the community together for a fun-filled afternoon.  The leaders will teach anyone who wants to learn.   It does require some strategy as well as some luck to play.  A small amount of time and effort is needed to become familiar with the principles and rules of the game.
