Kimball Library News 3/6/17

Do you enjoy checking out cookbooks and trying new recipes? If so, why not join us for our new Healthy Cookbook Club?  Our first meeting will be held on Monday, March 20th at 6:30.  At this initial meeting you will have the chance to meet and greet our Healthy Cookbook Club facilitator, Karen DiPietro, a registered dietitian.  Each month a different healthy cookbook will be selected and participants will be able to check out a copy and spend time trying out the various recipes at home. When the group gathers the next month, Karen will discuss the health benefits of the various recipes and participants can share their opinions of the meals they tried.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to select, prepare and bring a sample of the recipe to share with the group.

Register so we know how many cookbooks to have on hand for the first meeting of this healthy and yummy club.

About Karen:  Karen DiPietro, RDN, CDE is a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at Ellen Byron and Associates in Haverhill, MA where she provides individual nutrition counseling and diabetes education.  Karen also facilitates after school nutrition and cooking programs for Kids Test Kitchen.  She established a nationally accredited diabetes education program and has facilitated diabetes education and support groups in many communities.   Karen is passionate about helping people eat healthier by tailoring eating strategies to individual preferences and lifestyle, leading to sustainable changes in eating behavior.  She believes people need to stop restrictive diets and focus on quality food and home-cooked meals.  To that end, she is interested in providing practical, hands-on nutrition education through cooking classes, food demonstrations, supermarket tours and cookbook clubs.   She lives in Haverhill with her husband and 14-year old dachshund, and has two grown sons.  Karen is excited about facilitating her first Healthy Cookbook Club.

TEEN COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS: If you are in grades 6-12 you can nurture a new or non-reader. You’ll have a little buddy to read and play games with. You'll read together for 30 minutes and do crafts we prepare or play games we provide for 30 minutes. This will happen on 6 consecutive Wednesdays from 4-5pm for our Library Buddies program starting March 15th and going through April 19th.

Receive community service hours for your time!  This is a 6 week commitment unless other arrangements are made.  Talk to Kathy Watson, Director of Youth Services.  Residents take priority.

Questions? Contact Kathy Watson at kwatson@kimballlibrary.com or call the library and ask to talk to her.  Please note that the middle school and high school buses (Bus 126) do drop off here at 2:30.  Check with the bus policy and school regarding this arrangement.

Kimball Library News 2/27/17

Our renowned “Library Buddies” program is back for the 10th consecutive year! This popular six week series will be running from March 15 to April 19 on Wednesdays from 4-5pm.  Little buddies in grades K-3 will be paired with an older buddy in grades 6-12 to read with, create projects with, play games with, and have one-on-one attention.  Registration is a commitment to all six weeks, barring sickness, unless you make arrangements in advance.

We are looking for capable teens and tweens (middle school and older only, please) to play the part of the big buddy.  Please note the six week commitment and ask to talk to Kathy Watson, Youth Services Director, if you are interested.   Buddies are expected to commit to all six weeks unless pre-arranged.  Generally, half of the time will be devoted to reading while the other half will be spent jointly doing puzzles, games, crafts or coloring. Crafts will be pre-selected for you.  All readers’ hours will be recorded. Your time spent with us may also be used toward community service hours (older buddies) and is great leadership and mentoring experience!

We have separate online registration for each of the age groups.  Please be careful to click on little buddies (K-3) OR big buddies (grades 6-12). Registration is mandatory.  Non-resident big buddy applicants will be considered.

GIRLS WHO CODE: Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet girls are being left behind. While interest in computer science ebbs over time, the biggest drop off happens between the ages of 13-17.  This is why Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization that teaches girls computer science and programming concepts, was born. Kimball’s Girls Who Code Club is being run by certified Girls Who Code instructor Pam Livingston and is being assisted by Kathy Watson.

Girls Who Code is a club that takes places at the library Thursday afternoons 2:30-4:30. It does not cost anything to participate, but you are asked to bring a laptop to use. If this is a problem please let us know as the library has a limited amount of laptops that we can loan during club time.  The club will take place weekly until June 13th.  The expectation is that you will come unless you are ill or out of town.  The lessons build weekly and to ‘pass’ you need to attend 80% of the meetings.

Questions? Contact Kathy Watson at kwatson@kimballlibrary.com or call the library and ask to talk to her.  Be prepared to bring a laptop or have it dropped off for you.  Please note that the middle school and high school buses (Bus 126) do drop off here at 2:30.  Check with the bus policy and school regarding this arrangement.  This event is for girls in grades 6-12 only.

We currently have a very small amount of girls and are still taking newcomers.  Don’t let your daughter miss out on this awesome opportunity! Register on the online calendar or call us at 603.362.5234.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: Coming up---Jackie (March 7), Allied (March 14), Fences (March 21), & Patriots Day (March 28).  Movies start at 1pm and free popcorn is served.  Hint: Early arrivers get the best seats!  We were recently brimming with 49 enthusiastic movie watchers!

Join us on Saturday, March 11th, from 10:30-11:30am to make a shamrock necklace.  This relatively easy and fun project is suited for children in kindergarten through grade 5.  Please register by calling or visiting the online calendar so we can ensure that we have enough supplies.  Get ready to be stylin’ on St. Patty’s Day!

TEEN SERVICE HOURS: We will be running our infamous library buddies program again this year on Wednesdays from 4-5pm from March 15 to April 19.  Sign up your K-3rd emergent or flourishing reader in the little buddies program today. We also very much need big buddies from grades 6-12.  This is opportunity to nurture a new or non-reader.  They’ll have a little buddy to read and play games with.  They will read together for 30 minutes and do crafts we prepare or play games we provide for 30 minutes.

T/weens will receive community service hours for their time.    This is a 6 week commitment unless other arrangements are made.  T/weens should talk directly to Kathy Watson, Director of Youth Services about how to register for this event series.  Residents take priority, but we do take Timberlane students from other towns.

SNAP CIRCUITS: We’re back at Snap Circuits on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm for the entire month of March.  The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more!

The lab will give opportunity to build in step by step fashion with the help of the facilitator. This is not considered a 'free play' activity.  Register youth in grades 2-5 only, please.

WICKED PISSED: Yep, you read that right!  From sports to politics, food to finance, aviation to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves, New England’s feuds have peppered the region’s life for centuries. They’ve been raw and rowdy, sometimes high minded and humorous, and in a place renowned for its deep sense of history, often long-running and legendary. There are even some that will undoubtedly outlast the region’s ancient low stonewalls. For instance, did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era, through early aviation (CT claims the Wright Bros. are wrong), to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, Ted Reinstein tells us who’s really 'Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why. After his lively presentation on Thursday, March 23rd at 6:30pm, there will be time for Q&A, and book-selling/signing.

Ted Reinstein, a native New Englander and local writer, offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England in this fun, accessible book. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have, in many ways, shaped the area itself, Reinstein demonstrates what it really means to be Wicked Pissed.
