Kimball Library News 8/23/21

We currently are accepting books, music, and DVDs in good condition in anticipation of the sale on September 25th.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. We are interested in book titles that are 5 years old or less.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a charitable organization.  Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library.

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

Please do not leave them in our book drop or at any of our doors when we are not open. Thank you!

T/WEEN BOOK CLUB: The t/weens in the local area are pretty fabulous and know how to dive into a book and have fun pulling it apart. We typically meet on the first Wednesday of the month, and this year we are test driving a new time of 6:00 PM. Candy and conversation will be served.  We appreciate if you would register in advance so we know how much candy to have on hand! Discussions are geared for middle-high school.

The September 1st book is ‘The Selection’ by Kiera Cass. Fall in love—from the very beginning. Discover the first book in the captivating, #1 New York Times bestselling Selection series.

Prepare to be swept into a world of breathless fairy-tale romance, swoonworthy characters, glittering gowns, and fierce intrigue perfect for readers who loved Divergent, Delirium, or The Wrath & the Dawn. Books are available at the main desk so come on down and check one out. We have multiple copies set aside.

Can’t pull it together this month to read?  Sign up for next month when we are reading ‘Symptoms of Being Human’ by Jeff Garvin. There will be a lot to unpack!

THE SECRET LIVES OF THE GULL OF APPLEDORE: Gulls often elicit strong feelings. Thieving French fries at the beach and dumpster diving behind fast-food restaurants has earned them a negative reputation among humans. Most people do not know gulls have rich social lives. Pairs often stay together for many years and equally contribute to the incubation of eggs and raising hatchlings. Learn about the lives of the gulls that nest every year on Appledore Island, off the coast of southern Maine. Find out how they care for their young, how their population is doing in the Gulf of Maine, and how their individual quirks and personalities play out in the wild.

This exciting program is taking place on Thursday, September 16th at 6:00 PM. Please register via online calendar or give us a call to get you on the list. Seating is limited.

LAUNCHPADS: Launchpads tablets are an innovative and fresh way to bring fun and educational games to children. The pre-loaded content and no internet connection means that learning is self-directed; your child is free to go at their own pace and pursue the concepts that holds their interest.

Launchpads are a NEW technology at the Kimball Library! Pre-loaded with content for kids and tweens, launchpads are designed with a simple, easy-to-use interface, and 100% secure. Access to powerful content is as simple as turning on each device — anytime, anywhere.

STEAM is a key focus in our Launchpad selection. Understanding science and engineering concepts in particular, are increasingly important to introduce to children at a young age so that they can better apply them at school. The games and puzzles included in these Launchpads prompt children to think in new and creative ways. We are hopeful that Launchpads will promote resilience and a love of learning. We have chosen a variety of content for toddlers through children in middle school.

The acquisition of the Launchpads was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the New Hampshire State Library. We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to lend these exciting, fun educational tablets to our youth!  Drop by to see them on display and check one out.

It’s sad that summer is closing in on us, but fortunately we have kept a musical gem in our back pocket.

About Pete Kilpatrick: Maine based singer/songwriter Pete Kilpatrick grew up with a deep and resounding love of melody. With no formal training in music, Pete picked up the acoustic guitar at the age of 16 and began teaching himself how to play, crafting his own songs all while falling deeply in love with the process.

After completing high school, Pete took a few years off before attending college to focus his energy on a full-time career as a musician. He wrote and recorded his first album, Half Way Home, back in 2003. Between networking and a near constant performing schedule throughout New England he began to develop a loyal following that would continue to grow over the years.

The next ten years in Pete’s career saw the successful release of six additional albums (totaling over 40,000 albums sold), a brief record deal with Epic Records and over 1,000 live performances. Pete and his band released his seventh studio album, Echo, in the spring of 2016.

The summer reading program officially ends on August 11th, so kids and teens should be making as many trips in as possible to gather up raffle tickets and prizes. The more you play, the better your odds are of winning! We hope to see many smiling and winning faces in the next several weeks.

Meanwhile, there are still story times and events to be registered for and attended. So go to the online calendar now and sign up!  There will be a brief interlude of planning and pausing for fall events so soak up the last bits of summer with us.

ANIMAL MASH-UP: There are so many animals that all look so different from one another. We'll learn about why some animals look the way they do, and then we'll use what we learn to create our very own brand new animals. We'll cut and paste collages, mold fins and feathers out of clay, and trace and draw our own amazing creations. Everyone will be encouraged to name their newly discovered species and tell the group about it at the end. There will be one crazy zoo right here at the Library!

Register children entering grades K-5 for this special event happening on Monday, August 9th, at 6 PM.

MCDONNY’S FARM: Come down to the Library to meet Farmer McDonny and his animal friends. We’ll have small petting spots set up around the courtyard so children and teens can safely meet bunnies, goats, and more.

To make our Summer Finale event even more special, we’ll host a delicious shaved ice food truck. A Kona Ice truck will be here and all summer reading participants will receive a 9 oz Kona Ice! What a great way to slurp up the last bits of summer!

Register everyone who will be in attendance. Be prepared to be in the Library Courtyard. Bringing a blanket so you can remain socially distant in your own family space (while you’re not meeting the animals) is a great idea. You can even pack a picnic.

This celebratory event starts at 6 PM and is sponsored by the amazing Friends of Kimball Library.

READERS THEATER: On August 12th at 6:30 PM, we’ll be hosting the last Reader’s Theater of the summer. Register children in grades 2-5 to have a marvelous time trying out expressive reading with voices and in character. This is great fun for the dramatic reader and good practice for the reluctant readers. Scripts are handed out and parts are assigned and then the antics commence!

Creative outlets are always important but they’ve never played a bigger role than they have this past year. We’re hosting a *T/ween Creative Café to celebrate and tap into everyone’s inner creativity. T/weens are welcome for the coffee, tea, and snacks, and to stay to share, listen, and create! This creative and timely event is taking place on Monday, August 2nd at 6 PM.

We’ll talk about some art that inspired us this past year and then tackle our own creative prompts. Everyone is welcome, no matter what kind of art you create. Do you write? Draw? Paint? Dance? Sing? Lip sync? This is for you! We’ll have materials available for (almost) everything.

We’ll plan to meet in the courtyard (or the meeting room in case of bad weather).

*Please only register if you are entering 5th grade or older

EYES ON OWLS: Everyone loves owls! Yet, how often do you get to see an owl up close? Perhaps you’ve glimpsed the shadowy form of a great-horned owl in the beam of your headlights as you traveled a back road at night. Have you ever scanned a frozen saltmarsh or hayfield in winter, hoping to find that arctic hunter, the snowy owl? How about that mob of noisy crows circling a white pine tree? Have they found an owl? Join teacher/naturalist Marcia Wilson and author/photographer/naturalist Mark Wilson to share their passion for owls. Then see SIX REAL LIVE OWLS in person! Whoooo could think of anything more fun than that?

Be prepared to be outside in the Library Courtyard. Bringing a blanket so you can remain socially distant in your own family space is a great idea. Register for this event happening on Wednesday, August 4th at 6 PM.

THE LAST DUO: Greg Descoteaux and Dan Sirois are both accomplished singer-songwriters and their vocal and instrumental talents complimented each other. With top-notch harmonies, The Last Duo is a diverse highly entertaining acoustic Duo that performs songs from a wide range of artists such as The Everly Brothers, America, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and many more.

Register and join us on Thursday, August 5th at 6 PM in the Library Courtyard for this wonderful musical duo. Thank you to the Friends of Kimball Library for sponsoring so many awesome concerts and youth events!

ANIMAL COASTERS: On the same night and time as The Last Duo (8/2 at 6 PM), we’re making special animal coasters with children in grades K to 5 to put our cold drinks on. They are great for the hot weather so register early to for kids to make their ‘cool’ coaster in the ‘cool’ library. They look so special everyone will wonder where you got them! There are limited seats so sign up the kids and you can enjoy the concert at the same time.
