Kimball Library News 12/21/10

It’s time to turn over a new leaf! Have you been thinking about trying out a book group? It’s time for those New Year’s resolutions to be mulled over, and we propose you add the myriad of events at the library to your list… monthly book discussions (grades 2 through adult), teen Thursdays, story hours for children, playgroups, baby lapsits for those under 2, Saturday cinema, etc. Please jump on the website for details or give us a call at (603) 362-5234 for suggestions on how to become more involved.

Start January off right with ‘Fun and Learn with Playdough’ for children ages 4 and up and parents too! You've never dreamed how many things can be done with playdough and how enjoyable it is. Working with playdough is a very important enduring tactile experience for children. When educating 'the whole child,' playdough activities will help promote the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and creative development of your child.
Miss Laura and Miss Gloria from Hazel Drive Early Childhood Center in Hampstead will guide children in their learning as they play. This program on Wednesday, January 5, from 12:30-1:15pm includes guitar music and singing, a visit from some playdough amigos and some Spanish vocabulary. Each child will leave with a bag of homemade play dough, the recipe, and the spark of many ideas for continued learning. Please join us as we explore the many benefits of this soft, soothing, flexible, engaging, creative substance.

Also new for January is Kimball’s first ‘Jack Frost Jamboree’! This exciting event will take place on Saturday, January 22nd, from 10:30am-2:30pm. Imagine the library being transformed into a mini golf course! Other events will include a snowball walk, snow shoe demonstrations (for adults & children), winter crafts, an option to participate in hat and mitten donations for Ruth’s House in Haverhill, MA, and refreshments including hot dogs and popcorn. This is just a tease of what’s to come, but save the date for yourself and your family.

Please note that the library will have limited hours on December 31 (10am-3pm), and we will be closed on January 1, 2011. Have a safe and Happy New Year!

What’s happening this Thursday (November 18) at 7pm? You will have opportunity to meet Atkinson-based photographer Paul Wainwright and learn about New England’s Colonial meetinghouses – once the center of life in every New England town.

When built in the 1700s, Colonial meetinghouses were the focus of both religious and civic life – concepts not at all separate in Colonial New England. These buildings embody an important chapter in American history. In them were formed the principles of our democracy and participatory government. In them the issue of separation of church and state was debated and tested. Wainwright’s photography explores these structures and the society that built and used them. They not only present a fascinating glimpse into our nation’s Colonial history, but are beautiful as well.

Wainwright will also be signing copies of his new book, A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England (Peter E. Randall Publisher, $35) – see: www.aspaceforfaith.com. This exciting event is being sponsored by ‘The Friends of Kimball Library’.
What’s happening regularly on Thursday nights? In general, there is something for teens each Thursday with a few exceptions. First Thursdays are for gaming (PluggedIN), second Thursdays are for board games (Unplugged), and third and fourth Thursdays are for writing (Teen INK). As always, check the online calendar or webpage for exceptions.

What’s happening in the Children’s Room regularly on Monday-Friday? We have weekly events that you won’t want to miss. Mondays: LapSit for Little Ones at 10:30am that transitions to Baby Playtime at 11am. The first half hour is guided fingerplays, hand rhymes, simple songs, and short stories for little ones ages birth to two. Caretakers are expected to participate. The second half hour is just casual play for little friends. Tuesdays: Simple Story/Craft at 10:30am for ages two to three with generally one story and an easy craft. Thursdays: Story/Craft at 10:15am for ages three to six with multiple stories and a craft. Fridays: Read & Feed at 6:30pm for ages 4-8 that generally consists of several books, a snack, and a color page or simple craft. We always have special events every month in addition to what is listed here so please check our online calendar at www.kimballlibrary.com or pick up a paper copy at either desk. Also, if you register for our E-News you can have the most current events in-boxed to you directly. There is always something happening at Kimball Library.

Children’s Librarian, Carolyn Birr, will don her chef’s hat once again and teach the second “Kids’ Cooking” class on Wednesday, November 10, from 4-5pm. Once again we are asking the thought provoking questions, “Do you like to cook?” or “Do you like to eat?” If you can answer ‘YES’ to either of those two questions and are in grades 3-5, then this is just the class for you. Spaces in the class are limited and you need to register so can secure your seat. The October class whipped up some lovely crepes, so the staff is wondering what yummy smells will be wafting in from the Children’s Room. Attend the program and experience it for yourself, and make it even merrier by gathering up some of your friends to register with you.

New Hampshire Photographer Paul Wainwright’s new book, A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England has been selected as one of five finalists in the nonfiction category for the 2010 New England Book Awards. The Atkinson resident and local artist will be here on Thursday, November 18, at 7pm to deliver a special presentation on his latest release. “A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England is a collection of Wainwright’s classic black and white photographs that paints a composite portrait of these once ubiquitous landmarks of the New England landscape. Only a few remain as they were – touched only by time – and Wainwright’s photographs give us a glimpse into an age when life was simpler.” We think it’s simple—mark the date and time and join us for the evening. Better yet, bring a friend or two. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autographs.

Please note that the Kimball Library will be closed on Thursday, November 11th, in recognition of Veterans Day. We will resume regular hours on Friday the 12th from 10-8. ‘Snakes and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what boys are made of!’ ‘Lively Boys! Lively Boys!: The Origin of Bad Boy Books’ is the topic for Thursday, November 4, from 6:30-8pm. Mark Twain's ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ (1876) and ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ (1884) represent the best of the 'bad boy' genre in American literature, but the theory of 'The Human Boy' that started it all was the brainchild of two Portsmouth, NH authors. It all began with 'Plaguey Ike Partington' (1850's) invented by B.P. Shillaber and ‘A Story of a Bad Boy’ (1869) by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Boys are born to be bad, the theory goes, and must fight and fail their way to manhood. Parents who overprotect and direct their sons endanger their futures. Historian J. Dennis Robinson tracks the NH origins of the genre that gave us Dennis the Menace and Bart Simpson. Come and hear for yourself to decide if boys are born to be bad and if we are stunting them with overprotection. This is a New Hampshire Humanities Council 'Humanities to Go' program and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

Registration is not required so come on in and invite your friends, too. We’ve always got room for one more voice and smiling face!

Also back by popular demand, formally known as 4th Saturday flicks, now dubbed “Saturday Cinema!” is on the fall roster. On Saturday, October 23, we’ll be showing a new DVD release. Mooove yourself over to Kimball Library on Thursday, October 14th, at 6:30pm and pay some homage to the NH bovine. Cattle were essential to the survival of the earliest New Hampshire settlements, and their contributions have been central to the life and culture of the state ever since. From providing dietary sustenance to basic motive power, bovines have had a deep and enduring bond with their keepers, one that lingers today and is a vital part of the iconography of rural NH. Where are NH's cows today? What are they doing for us now? Some answers will surprise you.

Our program is entitled ‘Cows and Communities: How the Lowly Bovine has Nurtured New Hampshire through 4 Centuries’, and our presenter is Steve Taylor. Taylor is an independent scholar, farmer, journalist and a long time public official. He operates a dairy and maple farm in Meriden Village, NH and served a quarter century as NH's Commissioner of Agriculture. He has been a newspaper reporter and editor. He was also the first Executive Director of the NH Humanities Council and is a lifelong student of the state's rural culture. This is a New Hampshire Humanities To Go Program and is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

You are not confirmed for the workshop until payment is received. Don’t miss out as our last class taught by Felicia Motherway was booked tightly and had a waitlist.

Grandparents ROCK! We're celebrating Grandparents’ Day at the library on Tuesday, September 14, from 4-5pm. Bring your Grandma or Grandpa with you for cookies and punch. Hear a story and make something special for them to take home. WE LOVE Grandmas and Grandpas! Ages 4 and up are welcome, but please tell us you're coming by registering on the online calendar, at the library, or give us a call at 362-5234 ext 224 (Children's Room.) Have your grandparents save the date, now!

Singing ROCKS! Please join us at the library for a joyful program for children ages 2-6 which includes singing, creative movement, a few Spanish words and lots of smiles! Miss Laura and Miss Gloria from Hazel Drive Early Childhood Center, Hampstead, will entertain the children with guitar, puppets, and props. Bring your smiling faces and singing voices to the library on Thursday, September 16th, from 10:30 to 11:30am and join the glee. Registration is not required.

History ROCKS! The Atkinson Historical Society will sponsor a talk and slide show on the history of the Underground Railroad on Thursday, September 16, at 7:00 pm at the Kimball Library in Atkinson. The presentation will be given by Eleanor Strang, retired director of the Kelley Library in Salem.

The Underground Railroad was the secret network in the years before the Civil War which assisted fugitive slaves to escape to freedom. Ms. Strang’s presentation will focus on the history of this network on a national level and then on the abolitionist movement and Underground Railroad activities in New England, particularly New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Some of the Massachusetts figures are quite well known, but many of those from New Hampshire are not. “One of the things I most enjoy about doing this presentation is the opportunity to raise people’s awareness of the lesser known heroes who played a significant role in this important movement,” said Ms. Strang.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Teens! Don’t miss this last summer gathering before school starts and everyone scatters to different teams, teachers, and schedules. We need one more connecting event before the fall schedule starts up. Come in pj pants with your movie candy and bottled water for ‘Teen Movie Night’ on Thursday, August 26th, from 7:30-10pm. The teen librarian will make the popcorn. Snacks to share are always welcome! We'll watch 'A Walk to Remember' and have a discussion afterward comparing the book to the movie for those who have read it while there will be general discussion regarding the film for all. There will be time for a game or maybe two, and then the 'rents can pick you up promptly at 10pm. Save the date, invite your friends, and REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. (Friends, too!) This event is for grades 6 to 12. As an added BONUS for that evening, expect the teen librarian to be wearing her new hair color – BLUE! Congratulations to all participating teens!

Plan ahead! Here’s to reminding our patrons that we will be closed Labor Day weekend (Saturday, September 4 through Monday, September 6.) Two day loan items checked out on Thursday the 2nd will not be due back until Tuesday, September 7. Take advantage of the extension and have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Local author talk and signing! It’s not often that an Atkinson resident writes a book, and this is your opportunity to capitalize on that. Local author, Michael Cormier, is the author of “Sumner Island” and he is making a visit to Kimball Library on Thursday, September 9, from 7-8pm. He will be available for discussion and signing. Don’t miss out!

Reminder! Keep bringing in those donations because the ‘Fall Book, Bake, and Flea Sale’ is literally right around the corner on Saturday, September 25, from 8am-3pm.

Kimball Library News 8/3/10

SHAZAM! Those teens really stepped it up this summer and met the teen summer reading challenge for ‘Make Waves!’ and then some! The challenge was that if at least 60 teens registered for teen summer reading and if at least 600 tickets made it into the jar by July 30th, the teen librarian would dye her hair blue. Tickets were obtained by reading or listening to books or magazines or by registering and attending teen summer reading programs. The teens doubled the amount of registrations necessary, i.e. 120 teens registered to read. Also, 660 tickets made it into the jar by July 30th. The teen librarian temporarily ‘blued’ her hair on August 3 and will have a more permanent blue color near the end of August. Congratulations to all involved.

Not to be outdone, the ‘Make a Splash’ readers nearly 48,000 minutes. They had 119 registrations and decorated the Children’s Room with glittery mermaids and tooth-baring sharks! Many children read and participated in the non-stop programs offered for their age group and had fun picking out weekly prizes.

Summer reading is now officially closed, but what a time we had! Over 200 kids and teens registered for the respective programs for their age groups. Nearly every day programs were offered and taken advantage of. Youth participated in various activities such as making popsicle stick boats, playing candy bar BINGO, participating in backyard water games, discussing water themed books, staying after hours with ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie nights, viewing kid flicks, Wii open play, root beer floats and sidewalk chalk, ‘Super Cold’ science, fish for fortune, hair and much more. We are hibernating from the excitement, but continue to check our online calendar for our upcoming fall schedule.

Both the teen librarian and children’s librarian are extremely grateful for our amazing sponsors who donated either gift cards or cash for prizes. Without them, we wouldn’t have the great prizes we had this year to offer. Many many thanks go to: The ever faithful ‘Friends of Kimball Library’, Canobie Lake Park (Salem), Victorian Park (Salem), Online Hair Salon (Atkinson), Story Land (Glen), Hannaford’s (Hampstead), NH Fisher Cats, (Manchester), Cedardale (Haverhill, MA), Charmingfare Farm (Candia), and Rye Airfield. Please join us in offering thanks for their contributions so the kids could win such fun items. Additional prizes were gifted to us by several individuals. It takes a village to raise a successful summer reading program.

Kimball Library News 7/27/10

Kimball Library News 7/20/10

Do the teens and tweens in the “Make Waves” summer reading program ever long for the good old days of Play dough, ‘go fish’, paint-by-number, glue stick collages, coloring books, and Chutes and Ladders? It’s ‘Nostalgia Night’ for them on Wednesday, July 28, at 6:30pm. We are going to take a trip down Memory Lane and do some of those ‘little kid’ activities that we’ve been too busy or mature to play lately and reminisce about the simpler times before we had braces, advanced placement classes, jobs, or acne. MAKE WAVES, register and attend, and you'll receive a raffle ticket toward the summer reading prize jar.

The burning question of August 3 is ‘WILL THE TEEN LIBRARIAN BE BLUE?’ The teens were challenged to have at least 60 registrations and 600 tickets in the jar (tickets are obtained by reading and participating in programs) by July 31. IF they win, the teen librarian will be sporting blue hair on a special evening. Put on your cowboy hat and boots and join us for an old fashioned “Hootenanny at the Kimball Library”. Get in the yee-haw groove and learn to square dance. We’ll have games such as a ‘Whoopie Pie Walk’ and face painting fun. Hotdogs with all the fixins’ will be served. The fun starts at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 3. The first 50 kids will get a free cowboy hat! The square dancing demo is at 6:30pm with lessons to follow. Mark the date now and dig out your bandanna. Spread the word by talkin’ because the library will be rockin’ from 5-8pm!

The summer reading program is coming to a close, but we are going out with a bang – literally! Be sure to drop by on Wednesday, August 4, for the ‘Summer Water Rocket Launch.’ Our summer program ‘Make a Splash-READ!’ will be finishing with a bang of an ending thanks to Mad Science of southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts for this special presentation. Mad Science is “Sparking Imaginative Learning in Science for Children ages 5-12.” You might want to bring a towel! You might get wet, and it is somewhat likely that you will.

Reminder: ALL summer reading program participants (Make a Splash OR Make Waves) are invited for ice cream sundaes at 1pm on Thursday, August 5.

Kimball Library News 7/13/10

Wow. The summer reading program time of year flies by. As of this writing, there are over 350 tickets in the teen summer reading jar. Do you think they will make the teen librarian go blue with the necessary 600? As for the younger set, they have already read over 28,000 minutes! Woo-hoo! Here is your reminder that the absolute last day to record books, minutes, or submit raffle tickets is July 30. You still have time to earn prizes so ‘Go go go go go!’

A merry time for all ages is just around the corner as summer reading comes to close. We are excited to be hosting a ‘hoedown’ technically, but hootenanny is such a fun word that we are labeling it as such. Put on your cowboy hat and boots and join us for an old fashion “Hootenanny at the Kimball Library”. Get in the yee-haw groove and learn to square dance. We’ll have games such as a ‘Whoopie Pie Walk’ and more... Hotdogs with all the fixins will be served. The fun starts at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 3. The first 50 kids will get a free cowboy hat! Mark the date now and dig out your bandanna. Spread the word by talkin’ because the library will be rockin’ from 5-8pm!

While you’re digging around for your hoedown attire, dig out the books you want to discard. Kimball Library accepts book donations year round, but twice a year we urge you to especially clear out what you no longer want and bring them in to us. The Fall Town-wide Yard Sale will be taking place on September 25 and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase. These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them this early. We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition. Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through. We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection. If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to “Got Books.” Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library. Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3). If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

Scratch, computer programming software created by MIT, is a fun and easy way for young animators to design and learn to animate! Using 'script blocks', which is the code to make your game animate, and 'Sprites', which are your characters, you can create ANYTHING with this awesome, cool software! What is even MORE cool is that YOU can participate in group sessions of Scratch at the library on Saturdays in July if you are entering grade 6 up through grade 12. Sessions will be held from 10:30am to 12pm. Find out more about Scratch by taking a peek on scratch.mit.edu. Our instructor is Wesley Clapp who is a middle school Scratch enthusiast. Registration is required and there are limited slots available. Please sign up individually for each session you'd like to attend.

We are fortunate to host his program which is being sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The teens have taken off in a valiant effort to make the teen librarian dye her hair blue! 60 registrations and 600 tickets in the summer reading jar was the goal by July 30th. As of the writing date of this article over 60 teens are currently registered and reading. Can they get 600 in the jar? Time, effort, and participation will tell. Just in case, the teen librarian has a hair appointment scheduled for Wednesday, August 4th. Janet Porter of Online Hair Salon will be donating her service of making the hair blue if the teens succeed.
A way for the teens to earn tickets for the jar is not only by reading, but also by registering in advance and then participating in teen programs. Opportunities on the horizon include upcoming book discussions (middle school grades will meet on July 7, high school grades on July 14) at 6:30pm to nosh and talk about ‘Island of the Aunts’ by Eva Ibbotson. On July 6 from 6:30-7:30pm there is time to make watercolor art cards for book recommendations for the teen area. Keep checking the online calendar to register in advance for programs.

Children need to come on Wednesday, July 7 at 4pm and ‘Make Waves!’ like the pirates. Try the school of fish questions and have 'cool' fish from the sea to eat. (That's what pirates would do!) It also will be fun making Popsicle stick boats. The official boat racing takes place July 21-Wed, at 4:00pm outside on the water! There will be prizes on the day of the racing.

Need a book or a movie for the weekend and you didn’t make it in during the week? Here is a reminder that we are open every Saturday during the year until 3pm so stop in and stock up. Upcoming is Monday, July 5, (Independence Day observed) and on that date we will be closed so you’ll get to keep movies taken out on Friday, July 2, until Tuesday, July 6. As always, we wish you a safe and pleasant holiday.

Did you do your ‘homework’ and bring the kids and teens in to register for summer reading? It’s not too late, but don’t delay so they can get started on prizes.

All Thursdays and Fridays in the month of July have something for kids to look forward to. Each Thursday from 3:30-5pm a movie will be playing in the Children’s Room related to the ‘Make a Splash’ theme. On July 1 we’ll be starting the series off with “Shark Tale.” Likewise, on Fridays we are allowing children in grades 1-5 to ‘get wet’ with some Wii water games from 1-3pm. Kids can join us for a time of open play for water-related Wii games such as penguin slide, river balance bubble, wakeboarding, beach Frisbee, power cruising and canoeing.

Teen Thursdays continue in July as well from 6:30-7:30pm. Each week there is a different event and it all relates to the ‘Make Waves’ theme. On July 2 our Wii event will consist of water games from Wii Sports Resort (wakeboarding, beach Frisbee, power cruising, canoeing), and teens who are part of summer reading will receive a raffle ticket for registering and attending. It’s all part of the plot to make the teen librarian ‘go blue!’
Adults, don’t be left out of Wii fun and games. Every Friday from 10:30am to 12pm you’re welcome to join us for Wii Sports and/or Wii Sports Resort in the large meeting room. The ‘regulars’ welcome newcomers and will happily give instruction if you’ve never played before. Join in for good times at Kimball Library.

Need a book or a movie for the weekend and you didn’t make it in during the week? Here is a reminder that we are open every Saturday during the year including summers with the exception of Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. We’re here on Saturdays until 3pm so stop in and stock up.

MAKE A SPLASH (PreK-Grade 5) or MAKE WAVES (entering grade 6 and up), but do MAKE SUMMER READING a priority. Help your child ‘decide’ to register. We’ll do the wooing with prizes, blue hair challenges, raffles, crafts, games, book discussions, movies, and more. There is literally something for everyone if you help us with the initial commitment portion which involves a trip to Kimball Library. Registration begins on JUNE 17 and is ongoing, but the sooner your child registers the sooner we can reel them into making summer reading a real part of their summer. Join us in this team effort where everyone wins.

Kicking off summer reading with a bang is a ‘whale’ of a good time! Come get ‘eaten’ by a whale. A 60-foot finback whale is coming to Kimball Library on Tuesday, June 29, and will be here from 6-7pm. You'll be able to go inside and learn about these whales that are native to New England. They are the second-largest animals on earth. Our whale is from the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, Portsmouth, NH, and it will definitely make ‘a splash’ or ‘waves’ for summer reading. This summer reading program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library and is geared toward grades one and up.

‘MAKE A SPLASH’ is the 2010 Summer Reading Program for kids in preschool through those entering grade 5. Registration begins on June 17 and continues with the program. Basic details that you need to know are that summer reading programs are free with activities for children of all ages. Register first at the library to receive your packet of material. You may keep track of all books on your computer or a computer at the library. We will give you a password when you register. Got questions? CALL: 362-5234 and ask for Carolyn Birr, Children’s Librarian, or email her at children@kimballlibrary.com

‘MAKE WAVES’ is the 2010 Teen Summer Reading Program. ‘MAKE WAVES’ is open to Atkinson patrons entering grades 6 through age 19 (as of Fall 2010). Register online beginning Thursday, June 17th, and then you need to come into the Kimball Library to receive your reading tickets and a $5 reading coupon. Use it to pay down your outstanding fines. If you only want to use part of your reading bucks, we will initial the coupon and write down the remaining balance.

For each age appropriate item you read, turn in your reading ticket to a staff member with your name, telephone number, and title of the item you read. There is no required amount of reading and you can include graphic novels, magazines, novels, books on CD - it all counts as long as it is literature. If you complete all ten tickets, you can ask for another set of tickets. The last day to enter reading tickets for the raffle is July 30th.

If you read an item that is more than 200 pages, you may enter 2 coupons for that same book. Remember~ over 200 pages = double coupons. Participation raffle tickets are being offered for teens that have registered and stay for any teen programs. All events on the July calendar are eligible for tickets if you attend. For teens who take extra effort to record online as well as turn in tickets, you will be able to win extra prizes. The more you read and the more you participate, the better your odds of winning prizes. Last year over 30 teens won at least once.

When each ticket is completed, drop it off at the circulation desk to be eligible for random prize drawings held weekly. Prizes may include snacks, books, gift cards and more! You need not be present to win.

If at least 60 teens register and submit 600 tickets as a whole, the Teen Librarian (Kathy Watson) will highlight her ENTIRE HEAD ‘POOL BLUE.’ Get motivated and encourage your friends to register and read for MAKE WAVES. Got questions? CALL: 362-5234 and ask for Kathy Watson, Teen Librarian, or email her at youngadult@kimballlibrary.com

Good things come in threes, and we have three exciting events coming up in June that you won’t want to miss. (Not ONLY three, but three events you won’t want to miss registering for!)

ONE: For the little ones, we have planned several happy mornings of 'dance, stories, and ballet’ and a healthy snack for 3-5 year olds. We are calling it ‘Summer Dance’ and your young children will be happy from head to toe. This free, fun-filled learning experience will be led by Caroline Sharplin from ‘The European School of Dance’. Ms. Sharplin is well-qualified in dance with over fifteen years of teaching experience in the UK, Greece and Luxembourg. Right now we are offering two separate sessions. One will be held on June 7, and the other is slated for June 21. Both are being offered on a Monday from 10-11am. Space is important so please register now.

TWO: Yum, yum, get your tongue ready for tasting! Sample chilled soups, breads, spreads and beverages made from the treasures of a local herb garden. You’ll also be given answers to some burning questions such as ‘What did the Bostonians drink after their tea was thrown into the Bay?’ or ‘What did great-grandma give to a fussy toddler?’ Registration is required. This event is planned for Thursday, June 10th, from 6:30-8pm and will be presented by Brenda Weber and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

THREE: For adults only, please, we are offering ‘Wii Twilight’. Join us for bowling and/or other Wii sports on Friday, June 18, from 8-10pm. It’s after hours so we can make as much noise as we want! I guarantee it will be both friendly and competitive. The Friday morning crowd who often plays Wii here is looking for some night-life as well as some newcomers. Don’t hesitate to try it out, and don’t hesitate signing up early as it is required. (Pssst…events 2 and 3 in this article have more than half the spaces already filled. Don’t delay your registration!)

REMINDER: Make way for the 2010 Summer Reading Program! The teens (those entering grade 6 to age 19) will be part of “Make Waves”, and the younger gang (preschool and elementary) will be part of “Make a Splash.” Registration for all will begin on Thursday, June 17th. All reading activity logs (younger generation) and raffle ticket entries (teen program) will be need to be completed by the end of July. In early August we will wrap things up with a finale. Please mark the date as to when registration begins so you’ll be sure not to miss out on getting in as much reading as possible (think prizes!) and for getting your info early so you won’t miss out on registering for fun events.

Here’s to reminding all kids in grades 2 and 3 of a new book group that’s just for you aptly named ‘The Brown Bag Book Club.’ Pick up a copy of the book of the month entitled “Catwings” by Ursula K. Le Guin at the Children’s Desk. On May 17th at 5:30pm bring your dinner in… you guessed it, a brown bag. We’ll provide the dessert and drinks and discuss the book until 6:30pm over dinner. Registration is required so go online to our website and visit the calendar page or sign up directly at the Children’s Desk. You’re a big kid now so you can be part of a book club. Be sure to spread the word to your friends and invite them to try it out, too.

Here’s to reminding all teenagers ages 13 and up that a writing group is in process that you are free to join. This is not school – you are not graded except by participation and a willingness to have a good time. We expand our vocabulary and story writing skills by games and peer editing. This is not a class for accomplished writers, rather it is a gathering of those of us who like to play with words. We are dubbed ‘Teen INK’ and meet the 3rd and 4th Thursdays of every month from 6:30-7:30pm. Please give us a try. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 20th, at 6:30pm.

Here’s to reminding our patrons that we will be closed Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 29 through Monday, May 31.) Two day loan items checked out on Thursday the 27th will not be due back until June 1. Take advantage of the extension and have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Libraries provide community and culture. Coming up on May 11th you can experience a two for one here at Kimball Library! Educator, speaker, and traveler, Kay Galloway, will be providing a chance for you to travel vicariously through Mayan Civilization via her photos and dialogue. The Mayan Civilization is summarized by Galloway as such: builders of giant pyramids, extensive cities, and powerful dynasties in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. Seeing and hearing is believing, and tales will be told and photos will be seen on Tuesday, May 11, from 6:30-8pm in our large meeting room. Gather round with folks from the community and fasten your seatbelt for a whirlwind tour. No registration is necessary. How’s that for easy?

We also are sporting some new photographs in the large meeting room that you won’t want to miss. Patricia Gaddis is an amateur photographer from New Hampshire. She enjoys taking photographs of an assortment of things - from landscapes to water scenes, sunsets, animals and people, anything that interests her. You can always find her with her camera as it travels with her everywhere. Gaddis has taken some first place ribbons at local fairs. She is exhibiting an assortment of her favorite photographs decking the meeting room walls. Please take time to stop into the library anytime Monday-Friday from 10am-8pm or on Saturdays from 10am-3pm to enjoy her work and encourage a member of the community.

May Book Discussions ~ Kimball Library

May is a great month to join a book discussion. Books are available for the asking, and participants are always welcome. Not sure? Come listen and you’ll be hooked! Read a hook from the publisher for each book and see…

(TWEENS-GRADES 6-8 from 6:30-7:30pm) WEDS, MAY 5 ~ “Wolf Rider” by Avi.
“The phone rang three times before Andy picked it up. "Hello?" he said. A voice replied, "I just killed someone. I killed...Nina." Andy Zadinski is convinced that the man who calls himself "Zeke" is serious. But no one will listen to Andy - not the police, not his friends, not even his father. They all say he's crying wolf, even when Andy discovers that there really is a Nina Klemmer. Even when he spots her at the local college and sees that she fits Zeke's description of her. Exactly. Despite warnings from his father that he should just forget about the call, Andy feels obligated to track Nina down and warn her. What if Zeke really is plotting to kill her? When Andy investigates further, he finds out that Nina may not be Zeke's only target...”

(YOUNG ADULT-GRADES 9-12 from 6:30-7:30pm) TUES, MAY 11 ~ “Wintergirls” by Laurie Halse Anderson.
“Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in fragile bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the thinnest. But then Cassie suffers the ultimate loss-her life-and Lia is left behind, haunted by her friend's memory and racked with guilt for not being able to help save her. In her most powerfully moving novel since Speak, award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia's struggle, her painful path to recovery, and her desperate attempts to hold on to the most important thing of all-hope.”

(EVENING-ADULTS from 6-7pm) TUES, MAY 18~ “The Forgotten Garden” by Kate Morton.
“In 1913, in the last year before the world plunged into war, a tiny orphan girl arrives alone on the shores of colonial Australia from England. Struck by pity, the dock master and his wife take her in and raise her as their own. On her 21st birthday, they finally reveal to "Nell" her true origins. Suddenly troubled by her missing history, she returns to her country of origin, hoping to trace her roots. She parses together some of her hidden past but dies before she can learn the complete story. Years later, her young granddaughter Cassandra pieces together the final missing parts of the puzzle. The author of The House at Riverton has crafted a novel of gothic intrigue that will remind some readers of The 13th Tale.” (Excerpt from Barnes & Noble)

(MORNING-ADULTS from 10:15-11:30am) WEDS, MAY 26~ “The Second Mouse” by Archer Mayor.
“Intriguing plots, complex characters, and a landscape come to life are mainstays of Archer Mayor's New England thrillers. With a gift for vivid writing, he has made "an honorable art form of the regional mystery," according to the New York Times Book Review. Now in a suspenseful new novel, Mayor's popular sleuth Joe Gunther faces one of the most baffling cases of his career.

A legend among Vermont cops, Joe Gunther has solved more local whodunits than a whole squad of detectives. But his latest case takes him and his team off their Brattleboro home turf, forty-two miles west, to chip-on-its-shoulder, blue-collar Bennington.”

It’s time! It’s time! It was weather-delayed, but it’s finally sailing time for ‘Traveling to Easter Island and Patagonia, Chile’ on Tuesday, April 13, 7:00pm-8:00pm. Best of all, you can do it from the comfort of the Kimball Library. Did you ever wonder why all those statues (moais) are on Easter Island or why it’s called the most remote place on Earth? Come to see and hear about what the mystery of Easter Island is all about. Diane Heer, Director of Kimball Library and traveler, will also share her pictures from Southern Patagonia and Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Get on board and get ready to soar. No registration is required and your guests are welcome.

It’s time! It’s time! It’s time for ‘The Home of the World’s WORST Weather!’ And yes, it’s worse than what we’ve had here lately. Eric Pinder, the New Hampshire writer for children and adults about science, nature and weather, will speak about the famous NH 'Worst Weather' place. Weather aficionados out there will enjoy stories from the Mount Washington Observatory where Eric Pinder lived and worked for seven years.

Mount Washington has the nickname 'home of the world's worst weather,' and he'll talk about what it's like for people and cats to live and work on the summit. He'll also share weather facts and jokes from personal experience, and from his children's book “Cat in the Clouds” and adult book, “Life at the Top.”

You can read Pinder's new essay about living in snow country in the January/February 2010 issue of New Hampshire Home magazine, and you can check out his website at www.ericpinder.com to learn even more about him. He'll also have his books available the evening of the presentation that’s taking place on Tuesday, April 20th, from 6:30-7:30pm, and he will sign them at our library. This program is geared for ages eight to adult. Please mark your calendars for this event.

In case you missed the memo, tweens and teens can add some fun and sense of community to their lives on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm. If you have questions regarding any of the teen programs, please take your queries to Kathy Watson, Teen Librarian. You may call the library at 362-5234 or email her directly at youngadult@kimballlibrary.com.

TWEENS Plugged IN (First Thursdays) ages 10 and up
We have Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and Mario Kart. We also are willing to use your Wii games with our console if they are age appropriate. Come in on the first Thursday of every month from 6:30-7:30pm for an open time of playing. Invite your friends and put the teen librarian to shame by challenging her to a game. PLUGGED IN is open to ages 10 and up. Try us out on April 1.

TEENS UNplugged (Second Thursdays) grades 6 and up
Join us here on the second Thursday of the month from 6:30-7:30pm to play party games, cards, or board games. We have a selection here, or you can bring something from home that you’ve been itching to play. UNPLUGGED is open to grades 6 and up. Bring your friends so we’ll have enough for the party games. We had a great time playing Balderdash in March. Try us out on April 8.

More TEEN INK – Writers Group (Third and Fourth Thursdays) ages 13 and up
Teen INK is a safe place for budding writers to flourish. Every third Thursday from 6:30-7:30pm we’ll gather to try some new techniques, work on whatever suits us (creative or required pieces), and hang out with other teens with this common interest. All teens ages 13 and up are welcome. This is a chance to practice your writing skills, learn new techniques, read what other teen writers are working on, and hear helpful comments about your own writing from your peers. All teens ages 13 and up are welcome. This is not a gathering for experts; it is a haven for trying out your creativity. We play with words and have a great time. Try us out on April 15 and 22.

Travel much? Now is your time! If you like to travel inexpensively, then pull up a seat with us on Tuesday, April 13 at 7pm and prepare to explore the wonders of Easter Island and Patagoni, Chile. Did you ever wonder why all those statues (moais) are on Easter Island or why it’s called the most remote place on Earth? Come to see and hear what the mystery of Easter Island is all about. Diane Heer, Director of Kimball Library and traveler, will also share her pictures from Southern Patagonia and Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Book your ‘flight’ now on your datebook and prepare for take-off!

Take your pick! In honor of the *Big Read* we are showing the classic film, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, in our large meeting room on two different dates and times. For you matinee folks, we are showing the movie on Thursday, March 11, at 1pm. For you night owls, we are showing the movie on Tuesday, March 16, at 6pm. “Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his brilliant performance as a Southern lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape in this film version of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel. The way in which it captures a time, a place, and above all, a mood, makes this film a masterpiece. The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him – except Atticus Finch, the town’s most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children.” *The Big Read: NH Reads ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a project of the Center for the Book at the NH State Library. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.*

Here’s to calling all kids in grades 2 or 3 to a NEW book group that’s just for you sporting the name ‘The Brown Bag Book Club.’ Pick up a copy of the book of the month entitled “Tornado” by Betsy Byars at the Children’s Desk. On March 22nd at 5:30pm bring your dinner in a brown bag. We’ll provide the dessert and drinks and discuss the book until 6:30pm. Registration is required so go online to our website and visit the calendar page or sign up directly at the Children’s Desk. You’re a big kid now so you can be part of a book club. Be sure to spread the word to your friends.

Don't miss out on a special presentation by New Hampshire Criminal Defense Attorney, Stephanie Hausman. She will discuss the role of defense lawyers in the criminal justice system taking the portrayal of Atticus Finch in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ as a jumping off point. The question of how perceptions of defense attorneys have changed will be discussed. This is another chance for you to take part in the Big Read connection. Stay connected at your local library.

Think spring and beat the winter blues! Join our Folk Art Workshop and paint a ‘Welcome’ sign for your door sporting a bunny in the lavender. Friends of the Library are sponsoring a two-session class on Saturday, March 13 and March 20, 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Kimball Library. The cost of $25.00 includes instructions, sign and paint. Register at the library to pick up your sign, instructions on preparation and list of supplies to bring to class. For further information, call Carolyn Birr at (603) 362-5234 or Ellen Witherell at (603) 362-5655.

Thinking about spring cleaning? How many unfinished crafts or painting projects do you have hanging around the house? Procrastinate no more! Join the Thursday ‘painting and crafters’ determined to finish! You’ll find partners in crime on Thursdays from 10am to noon each week working on finishing paints or crafts. Come when you can and leave when you must, but do come.

March into Kimball Library and be part of the trend that libraries are the hopping places to be especially during low economic times. “Library Buddies” is one of the events that has been bursting at the seams for the past 3 years and thus is returning by popular demand. This crowd-pleasing event will be happening for 6 consecutive weeks on Wednesdays from 4-5pm beginning March 17th and ending on April 21st. Each week teens (youth in grades 6-12) will be assigned to little buddies (kindergarten age through grade 3). Library buddies will read or be read to (depending on desire and ability) for the first 30 minutes followed by puzzles, games, and/or craft activities. This is a great opportunity for the younger set to practice listening to books of their choice or for emerging readers to try out their skills on an older buddy. Need a buddy? Want to be a buddy? We need your children to participate and experience the joy of being a literary encourager or participant. You may register your little buddy online at our website, kimballlibrary.com, on the children’s calendar, call us, or drop in and personally speak to either Kathy Watson or Carolyn Birr. All interested big buddies must speak with Kathy directly and be committed to an early arrival time. Due to the high demand for this program, all little buddies must be registered and committed for all six weeks. Each year we book early and registration is limited.

Also, if you are a crafter in any shape or form, take part in the March for crafts! We have a myriad of possibilities in front of you. On Tuesdays from 10:30-noon the knitters gather and will welcome you, and on Thursdays the painters/crafters gather and will welcome you. Scrap bookers unite and meet on the 4th Wednesday from 6:15-7:45pm, while kid scrap bookers meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 4:30-5:30pm. On two Saturdays (the 13th and the 20th) a folk art workshop is available, and on the 1st Monday of the month from 11-12 the Craft Bunnies await you. Phew, is that all? Check out the March calendar online for details as it is packed full of things for you to do. Some of these activities require registration so be sure to sign up if necessary.

Feeling craft impaired? We have the Big Read activities going on throughout the month and there are numerous events to take part in that do not require any crafts. Please consider attending some or all of the following: several showings of the film “To Kill A Mockingbird,” a book discussion led by UNH Professor Emeritus of English, and a special presentation by New Hampshire Criminal Defense Attorney, Stephanie Hausman. She will discuss the role of defense lawyers in the criminal justice system. Dates and times can be found online, in house, or in future articles so stay tuned as March is a hopping month at Kimball Library.

Kimball Library News 12/29/09

It’s that time of year again when the Atkinson Women’s Civic Club is holding their 2nd Annual Photo show and we are the hosting facility. Submissions are being accepted beginning Monday, January 4th through Saturday, January 23rd. All the information you need to know regarding this event can be found at www.awcc-nh.org. Located on the website is a link for the photo show rules, payment information, etc. as well as a link for whom to contact. Please submit your queries there. Good luck and happy shooting!

Don’t forget to start the New Year right by logging onto www.kimballlibrary.com and clicking the calendar link. You will find a myriad of events that you can attend from book groups to movies to youth events to special programs. Take a new look and see what is happening for kids on Thursday afternoons and for teens and tweens on Thursday evenings. New this year will be ‘4th Saturday Flicks’ because the drop n’ shop in December was such a success. Each 4th Saturday of the month a movie will be shown in the large meeting room on the big screen starting at 10:30am. Kids ages 6-9 must register, and if parents sign a release on the day of the event they may leave the child/ren here. Ages under 6 are welcome with an adult, and ages 10 and up may drop in unannounced and unregistered. Specific movie titles will be made available on our online calendar within a week of the film’s debut at Kimball Library.

For youth on Thursday, January 14, in the Children’s Room make time to ‘Take a Break!’ from 3:30-4:30pm. Take a break, have some fun, and make a craft. Grades 3-5 are encouraged to come on down. We need you to register on our calendar in advance or call the library and have us register you. That evening, teens (grades 6 and up) can get UNplugged from 6:30-7:30pm in our meeting room. Don’t be bored – get on board! This is a chance to play board games or cards with other tweens and teens and make some new friends. Bring along friends (they do not have to Atkinson residents) so we’ll have enough for the party games. Don’t be boring, check us out and make us part of your Thursdays.
