Kimball Library News 4/23/18

PEEK OF S.T.E.A.M: Did you hear about our S.T.E.A.M. program all winter and not get a chance to participate?  Would you like to take peek at it?  If you do, or if your little one enjoyed the class and you don’t want it to end yet, we have a special opportunity for you.  

No registration necessary, just come in on Thursdays from 11:30 to 12:30 and experience the ‘best of STEAM” on May 3, 10, 17, and 24.  This class is developmentally appropriate for ages 3-6.

BOOK, BAKE and FLEA SALE: Come one, come all!  On Saturday, May 19^th, between 8 AM and 3 PM, we will have a plethora of items for you to purchase.  Books, movies, music, and baked goodies as well as random flea market items and more will be available.  Eight pieces of original art donated by local Atkinson residents currently on display near the main circulation desk will be raffled off at the end of the day.  Raffle tickets cost $5.00 per ticket OR 3 tickets for $10.00 and may be purchased now.  All proceeds go to supporting the Friends of the Kimball Library who provide the library with so many programs for young and old, museum passes, and more.  You do not need to be present to win, but you do need to be present to purchase!  (wink wink)  Come on down!

HOLIDAY HOURS: The library will be closed for the entire Memorial Day weekend.  We will be open our regular hours on the Friday, May 25^th, from 5-8PM, and then closed Saturday, the 26^th through Monday, the 28^th.  This means, drum roll, that if you take a ‘new’ 2 day loan on Thursday the 24^th or Friday the 25^th it is not due until Tuesday, May 29^th!  Stock up accordingly!  Our doors will reopen on Tuesday at 10 AM. 

Here is friendly reminder that Overdrive Downloadable Books, the Libby app, Hoopla digital, TumbleBooks, and all our databases on our website are open 24/7 for members in good standing.  So if by chance you don’t get here when we are open, you have all these digital services to choose from!  Are you unsure how to use these digital services?  Keep reading~

TECH APPOINTMENTS: You can schedule a 30 minute appointment to get help with your electronic gadget, get answers to your queries about social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, get help setting up or organizing your email, or get in the know about any of the services in the paragraph above, and more.  The major caveat is that you must be a Kimball Library cardholder in good standing.  If you have questions you want answered or need more information on this service, please email kwatson@kimballlibrary.com with Tech Appointment in the subject line.  Or you may call the library and ask for Kathy Watson.  There are Friday tech appointments listed on our online calendar, but Kathy is flexible and will work around your schedule.

Kimball Library News 4/16/18

Kimball Library actually accepts book donations all year round, but twice a year we especially urge you to clear out what you no longer want and bring them in to us for the upcoming sale.  The Town-wide Yard Sale is just around the corner on Saturday, May 19^th, and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase at our book sale.  These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now.

We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition.  Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through.  We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection.  If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a charitable organization.  Celebrate Earth Day by recycling your unwanted items which helps our environment, de-clutters your home, and supports your local library!

Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3).  If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be available to assist you.  Please gather up your items before May 17^th.  We appreciate your time and effort.

ART RAFFLE: Enter to win a beautiful art piece!  We have 7 unique pieces of art (painting or photography) on display near our main circulation desk.  Tickets are priced at $5 per ticket or 3 for $10.  Stop in and put all your tickets toward your one favorite or spread them around.  These items will be on display until Saturday, May 19^th, and on that day a winner will be drawn.  You need not to present to win, so buy early and buy often!  All proceeds benefit the Friends of Kimball Library who buy so many things (like museum passes) and sponsor the bulk of adult and children’s programming. Thank you for your support! 

NH BOATING: The following NH Boating Safety Courses will be held at the Kimball Library on the following dates: May 1st & 3rd ~ 6:00 – 9:30.

The New Hampshire Classroom Course covers a variety of topics including boat navigation, boating safety equipment, invasive aquatic species and laws and rules. This instructor-led class incorporates a range of learning methods consisting of lecture, videos, and student discussion and culminates in a certification. *Individuals must attend both evening classes.

ROBERT ROGERS OF THE RANGERS: On a frontier where individualism flourished, New Hampshire’s consummate woodsman was just the leader to bring his men back safely from deep in dangerous country, even in stormy, freezing weather. 'The famous Major Rogers’ renown was such that he became perhaps the single-best-known American on both sides of the Atlantic. In October 1765, a private meeting with young King George III led to the launching of an expedition to find the long-dreamed-of Northwest passage to the Pacific – forty years before Lewis and Clark. But who was this frontier farmer, raised in Dunbarton? Thirty years after his death in obscurity in May 1795, Rogers' exploits were mined by James Fenimore Cooper for his best-selling novels, and in the 20th and 21st centuries, for other histories, novels, movies, and television. George Morrison takes us along on a journey from colonial North America to the 21st century.

 

This program, May 10^th at 6:30pm, is free and open to the public.  It is made possible through a grant from the NH Humanities.  Hosted by the Atkinson Historical Society.

Kimball Library News 4/9/18

Join us as José Lezcano presents a multi-media musical program that showcases the guitar in Latin America as an instrument that speaks many languages. Lezcano presents a variety of musical styles: indigenous strummers in ritual festivals from Ecuador, Gaucho music from Argentina, European parlor waltzes from Venezuela, and Afro-Brazilian samba-pagode. He also plays pieces by Villa-Lobos, Brouwer, Lauro, Barrios, Pereira, and examples from his Fulbright-funded research in Ecuador.

This program is free and open to the public and is made possible through the NH Humanities and the Friends of the Kimball Library.  Please help us plan accordingly register on the phone, online, or in person to let us know that you are coming and so that we may plan seating.  This event takes place on Monday, April 30^th, at 6:30pm.  Registered guests are welcome.  

About the presenter: José Lezcano earned a PhD from Florida State University. He is Professor of Music at Keene State College. Lezcano is a twice Grammy-nominated Cuban-American guitarist, composer, folklorist, and music educator and has published articles on South American, Caribbean, and Afro-Cuban music and musicians. Lezcano has captivated audiences on four continents. His programs of Latin American music, his own original compositions, and classical repertory have taken him from Carnegie Recital Hall to important festivals and venues in Cuba, Spain, Brazil, Germany, China, Peru, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, and Colombia.

SNAP CIRCUITS LAB 101: The Snap Circuits Lab will give circuit curious youth in grades 2-5 opportunity to explore and build in step-by-step fashion for approximately one hour on Wednesday, April 25^th, at 11:00 AM.

With its easy-to-follow instructions, Snap Circuits gives your child a hands-on education in how electrical circuits work to run the everyday devices that they're familiar with. They'll also gain valuable lessons in building and in following instructions. With these projects, children will experiment with things like electric switches, integrated circuits, digital circuits, fuses, and the transformation of circuit sounds into other sounds.

Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, kids can build on their skills as they progress through the manual. The lessons start out with a simple electric light and switch project that demonstrates how electricity is turned on and off with a switch. Further along, kids can put together a two-speed fan, create clap-controlled sounds, and more.

STEM TOYS: Join us for some time exploring with our STEM building toys during Stay-Cation week on Wednesday, April 25^th. Whether you're a pro at science, technology, engineering and math or you are just being introduced, you'll love expanding your brain power with our magnetic tiles, brain flakes and marble runs.

Anyone under 3 must be supervised by an adult in the room at all times due to small objects (marbles) as potential choking hazards. Drop in anytime between 11 and 2 to enjoy these STEM toys, but please register in advance so we can prepare properly.
