Seek and find? SEAk and Find! (It’s an ocean theme!) Someone is hiding in the library! Can you spot them? The Youth Service Librarian has their picture at the desk. If you see them, whisper their location to her for a sticker or a stamp.

Registration is not required for this program. Come anytime on Friday, July 1st, between 1-6 to test your observation skills.

SEASIDE SENSORY TIME: We’ll be keeping our sensory activities out for an extended time today. Stop in anytime between 11:30-3 for some tactile fun! You do not have to be a regular participant of the sensory class at 10:30 to pop in to this open exploration seaside sensory time on Thursday, June 30th.

OCEANS OF GAMES: During the summer reading window of time, children are encouraged to stop into the Library between 10 AM and noon to play ‘Oceans of Games’ with the Youth Services Librarian or other fishy gamers! We’ll be hosting Go Fish, Crazy Octopus, Whale Wars, or Slap Fish. If you don’t know these games, we will teach you. Games are geared for children familiar and comfortable playing cards, typically ages 5 and up.

COLOR MY OCEAN: We'll have WATER colors, Zentangles, coloring sheets, and other ocean themed art stations for your artistic pleasure. Stop in any time between 11:30-3 and color/craft/paint/create to your heart's content. Come when you can, leave when you must on July 5th and 6th.

On July 5 at 1:00 PM, we’ll be showing a retelling of a classic story. Cyrano de Bergerac is charged with the monumental task of wooing a woman, Roxanne, who he has fallen in love with. Through his love letters, Cyrano's true spirit is revealed. His amazingly amorous nature makes itself known through his communications to his beloved. Along the way, a new recruit to his regiment makes himself useful as the face of Cyrano. Because the odds are stacked against him, Cyrano wonders whether his fate is to love Roxanne from afar.

Please note that all applicants need to take a short aptitude quiz to be considered for hire.

SANDY BEACHES: At first glance, the sandy beaches of our New Hampshire coastline look a lot like deserts, just piles of sand. However, beaches are full of life and the ecosystems must be able to adjust with the constant rise and fall with waves, tides, storms and seasons. Explore this dynamic environment through a series of hands-on explorations of sand, life and the challenges of living with the surf.

We are excited to announce that UNH docents will be here providing an interactive, hands-on experience! This event is geared to youth in grades K-3 and will take place on Wednesday, June 29th, at 6:00 PM. Registration is limited, and Kimball Library cardholders will have priority.

This is a Summer Reading Oceans of Possibilities event.

SUMMER CONCERT WITH THE BEL AIRS: The Bel Airs have been New England's premier 50s doo-wop vocal group since 2009. Randy, Denice, Gabe, Denise, and Robert have brought the fabulous sound of the 1950s and 1960s popular love ballads and dance tunes to venues throughout New England. With their exquisite five-part harmonies rounded out with historical music facts and mild humor, their show is a full entertainment experience enjoyed by all.

The 2022 Summer Concert Series is generously sponsored by the George Family Charities.

Feel free to invite your friends and family to join you for this night of music. We are hoping for perfect weather to enjoy this group in the Library Courtyard on Thursday, June 30, at 6:00 PM. Bring blankets, towels, or chairs to get comfy. Registration is not required, but if you would like an email reminder you may sign up to get one.

Kimball Library News 6/5/22

Teen events, tween events, preschool events, adult programs and concerts! There are oceans of possibilities!

CAKE BY THE OCEAN: T/weens (Grade 5+) are welcome to participate in this exciting competition on Tuesday, June 28, at 6:00 PM. Please bake your own cupcakes in advance, and practice your decorating in the days prior if you choose.

At the event start, you will have 30 minutes to frost and decorate your three cupcakes in any way you choose. The theme is "OCEANS OF POSSIBILITIES" named after the 2022 Summer Reading Theme. A small prize will be awarded. There is only one winner so you cannot compete in pairs.

PARTICIPATION RULES~

1. Anyone can participate in grades 5-12.

2. Each participant must prepare 6 UN-decorated cupcakes prior to the event. You must bring all your decorating tools and supplies that you will need. Cupcakes can be from a box mix, from scratch, or a combination. More effort will certainly please the judges.

3. At the event, you'll have 30 minutes to decorate three cupcakes. (You bring 6 in case you make a goof.) The judges will be cutting ONE of your best 3 to taste. The other two will be put on 'display.'

4. Cupcake participants will judge the final results on presentation, creativity, effort, taste, and how well the cupcakes fit the theme 'Oceans of Possibilities' in anticipation of Summer Reading events!

5. Because of Covid, we are reluctant to have participants share their cupcakes with anyone other than the judges in the Library. (Subject to change.) We are sad about this, too. Please practice your best sanitation when preparing your cupcakes.

PARENTS: This event is FOR t/weens. Please allow them to do their own baking with minimal supervision (we understand about ovens!) This should be friendly, fun, and not fiercely competitive. The joy is in the journey! OCEANS of POSSIBILITIES for fun!

This is an 'Oceans of Possibilities' event sponsored by The Friends of Kimball Library.

RELIEVING NECK, SHOULDERS AND BACK PAIN NATURALLY: Relieving muscle pain is all about knowing the root cause.  Pills may mask the pain, but not address the solution.  When you know why and where the pain starts, then you have the power to take effective action that decreases the pain.  Join us on Tuesday, June 28, at 1:00 PM as Elizabeth Gallien, Licensed Massage Therapist, introduces and demonstrates ways to relieve neck, shoulders and back pain with stretching. Weather permitting, this event will be held in the courtyard and moved indoors in event of inclement weather.

HOLIDAY CLOSURE: Please be aware that the Library will be closed on Monday, June 20th, in recognition of Juneteenth. As always, Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy are open 24/7 with a valid library card.

STAY TUNED: Visit our website, Facebook page, Twitter account, YouTube or Instagram to learn about more program updates and more resources.

We are kicking off the Summer Concert Series and we couldn’t be more excited to have dulcet tones emitting once again from our acoustically terrific Library Courtyard! First up, 2Slick!

Trombones are front and center in this unique jazz group. The classic jazz quintet features a front line of a saxophone and a trumpet, or maybe two saxes. But 2Slick heralds the prominence of an instrument not commonly seen as a duo; the trombone.

2Slick is fronted by trombonists Steve Piermarini and Wayne Branco, and includes pianist John Arcaro, bassist Stephan Arsenault and drummer Mark Branco. The band features the music of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding as well as many original arrangements.

Wayne and Steve know a bit about playing the trombone. With a combined 100 years of study, practicing and performing between them, they’ve played in groups backing up artists from Bob Hope to the New Kids on the Block, at venues from the Blue Note in Osaka, Japan, to Carnegie Hall. Now they’ll be stepping into the spotlight as co-leaders of 2Slick. Join us for this a night of jazz at the Kimball Courtyard.

We are thankful and delighted that this Kimball Library 2022 Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the most generous and gracious George Family Charities.

*If you would like to receive a reminder about this event, or to receive information about venue changes due to inclement weather please feel free to register here. Otherwise, feel free to just show up with friends and family and enjoy an evening of music.

Also kicking off is, Oceans of Possibilities for the 2022 Summer Reading Program!

This year, Kathy Watson is throwing down the challenge gauntlet! If at least 200 youth in grades K-12 register for the ‘Oceans of Possibilities’ 2022 Summer Reading Program, her hair is going to match the theme and will get dyed ‘ocean blue’. We offer weekly programs for adults that you may have thought about in the past, and we want you to know you may join at any time. Take a peek at the partial list below.

NEEDLE CRAFTERS: Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, rug braiding, quilting or another form of needle work, come join us for Needle Crafters. Each Wednesday, this informal gathering is a fun meet-up for those who are currently working on projects or who wish to start one. Are you stuck on a stitch or confused by a pattern? Most likely someone in the group can help. It is a great group to get some ideas for beginning new projects as well. This weekly meet and greet group enjoy conversation and laughs all while stitching away. Register online or give us a call so you can get started.

The Needle Crafters meet on Wednesdays between 10:30 and noon. Please bring your own materials.

TIME FOR MAH JONGG: If you already know how to play Mah Jongg, come join the fun on Fridays from 1:00-4:30 PM. Players with pre-existing experience are welcome to join us in this strategy-based (plus a bit of luck) game.  Registration is required so please use the online calendar or give us a call.

Cozy up in the meeting room of the Library, share some laughs, and make some new friends. Studies have shown that Mah Jongg is a great game for keeping the mind sharp – we can all benefit from that!

Mah Jongg, a fun rummy-like game, is played with tiles rather than cards. There are many different versions of Mah Jongg all around the world. We play American Mah Jongg and follow the rules as defined by the National Mah Jongg league. One of the main differences is that American Mah Jongg uses an annual card of Official Standard Hands and Rules, against which all games are played. These cards are available from the National Mah Jongg League and you will need to bring yours along to use while playing.

*If you are reading this and would like to learn how to play Mah Jongg, keep your eye on the Library’s calendar as we plan to offer a “How to play Mah Jongg” learning session in the Spring of 2022 and at that time you are welcome to sign up to learn.

COMMUNITY KNITTERS: This group of service-minded knitters join up on Thursdays at the Library and bring their projects that they are knitting for charity. If you already know how to knit and want to be involved in these acts of service, stop by with your knitting gear. Registration is not necessary.

SUMMER READING: We can hardly believe it’s almost that time of year again! This summer’s theme is ‘Oceans of Possibilities’ and we plan to have an ocean of possible events and programs for youth of all ages. Registration will start as early as June 1, and there will be more details to follow. This year, if there are at least 200 registrations for the program, Kathy Watson (Youth Services Director) is laying her hair on the line to be dyed partially ‘ocean blue’ if the youth beat her in the challenge. Stay TUNA for more information!
