Where can you go to get energy efficiency information? You can enter the Kimball Library on Saturday, November 6, from 10am - 1pm and participate in the Atkinson Energy Fair. Rotating 10 minute presentations will include: MyEnergyPlan.net by Julia Dundorf from Clean Air Cool Planet; Unitil's energy efficiency, audit and rebate programs; Atkinson's energy audit grant award and project plan overview; and current rebates, tax credits and incentives (state & federal). Light and energy efficient refreshments will be served.

Where can you go and get free samples of morning coffee and teas from around the world, buy delectable pastries, and shop among friends for unique jewelry, pottery, multimedia and original artwork by local artists, exquisite handmade sweaters for all the family, quilted items, gifts for pets, children’s books, gourmet edibles, drink mixes, floral arrangements and gifts, greens for the holidays and more? You guessed it! The annual Peddlers Market, sponsored by Friends of the Kimball Library, will be held on Saturday, November 6, from 9am to 3pm at the Atkinson Community Center, 4 Main St., Rt. 121, Atkinson, NH. The ‘Friends’ are proud to support Yankee ingenuity and the entrepreneurial spirit to present a variety of artisans, crafters, and gourmet peddlers in time for holiday gift giving. You can avoid that crazy mall for a relaxing time of indoor shopping. Surprises may be in store, so drop by and make holiday browsing and purchasing a fun experience.

Where can you go to connect and get your game on? It’s back for the third consecutive year— National Gaming Day @ Your Library on Saturday, November 13th, and we will be celebrating again this year at Kimball Library. Games will be in various locations throughout the library and throughout the USA in participating libraries. Board games as well as Wii will be available. Please note that we are limiting participation in Wii to school age and up. Come for all or part of the day! You're also welcome to bring your own game from home and teach someone to play it with you. Bring friends or come make some new ones! Adults are encouraged to set the example by playing games and trying new ones. Last year one of our ‘over 70’ patrons beat a group of teens in Wii bowling, so gaming is NOT just for the young, but clearly for the young at heart. Our electronic gaming stations and board game play will be open from 10:30am-2:30pm. Mark the date and join the fun!

Where can you go for literature discussions? Weekly story times exist for babies up through age 9 on the following weekdays: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Do you like to cook? Do you like to eat? If you are in grades 3-5, we are anxious to work with you so can do both. ‘Kids Cooking’ is a three part series being offered on the second Wednesdays from October through December. We’ll be using simple seasonal recipes and working together. Each session requires individual registration so you can sign up for one or more of the classes. One session is not contingent on the rest, but do realize space is limited and may not be left if you don’t register in a timely fashion. Have some fun cooking with us on October 13th, November 10th, or December 8th from 4-5pm. Part of the fun is in the eating so maybe it will make it home, or maybe it will not. You create and you decide.

Get into the ‘spirit’ and bring your kids ages 4-9 for a little Halloween celebration in the Children’s Room on Friday, October 22, at 6:30pm. KIDS: Wear your costume for our Halloween parade! Join us in a mummy wrap! Then, there's an eyeball relay, apples, treats, and plenty of 'strange' things to keep you busy at our Halloween night -- even a scary story or two! Do you DARE come? Register NOW!

‘Snakes and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what boys are made of!’ ‘Lively Boys! Lively Boys!: The Origin of Bad Boy Books’ is the topic for Thursday, November 4, from 6:30-8pm. Mark Twain's ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ (1876) and ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ (1884) represent the best of the 'bad boy' genre in American literature, but the theory of 'The Human Boy' that started it all was the brainchild of two Portsmouth, NH authors. It all began with 'Plaguey Ike Partington' (1850's) invented by B.P. Shillaber and ‘A Story of a Bad Boy’ (1869) by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Boys are born to be bad, the theory goes, and must fight and fail their way to manhood. Parents who overprotect and direct their sons endanger their futures. Historian J. Dennis Robinson tracks the NH origins of the genre that gave us Dennis the Menace and Bart Simpson. Come and hear for yourself to decide if boys are born to be bad and if we are stunting them with overprotection. This is a New Hampshire Humanities Council 'Humanities to Go' program and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library.

Back by popular demand, a ‘Sing-A-Long” will be happening on Thursday, October 14, from 10:15 to 11:15am in the Children’s Room. Join us for a morning of songs on the guitar with Laura Picciano and Gloria Denoncourt, new owners of the Hazel Drive Early Childhood Center, Hampstead. This was so much fun in September that we’re doing it again. All children ages 2-6 are invited to enjoy a wonderful program of singing, stories, and lots of laughter! Registration is not required so come on in and invite your friends, too. We’ve always got room for one more voice and smiling face!

Also back by popular demand, formally known as 4th Saturday flicks, now dubbed “Saturday Cinema!” is on the fall roster. On Saturday, October 23, we’ll be showing a new DVD release. Have you ever wondering how to train a fire-breathing animal? Ages 6-9 must register in advance to stay unattended, ages 10 and up can drop in, and kids 5 and under are welcome with a parent or guardian. Please bring your own movie snacks and spill-proof beverages so everyone gets what they want and are allowed to have. Pillows are also welcome if you prefer to sprawl out rather than sit in chairs.

Reminder: Kimball Library will be closed on Monday, October 11th, in recognition of Columbus Day (observed.) Two day loans taken on Friday the 8th or Saturday the 9th will not be due until Tuesday, October 12. Have a safe and happy holiday.
