Kimball Library News 5/30/12

Did you know that we have 3 regular Kindles, 1 Kindle touch, and 1 large (DX) Kindle available for borrowing? Now that the hoopla has died down regarding the Kindle, our library devices have a much shorter waiting list. If you do not have an e-reader of your own, or if you’d like to read something that we have purchased for our Kindle, then you are in luck! We have over 50 adult bestselling titles loaded. We add more titles as time goes on so there is always something new. Give us a call to put a Kindle on hold for you. These are perfect for taking on vacation—an entire library in one place! We also are open to suggestions when it’s your turn to borrow. Please submit requests and we’ll see if we can accommodate your taste.

New things are always happening here at the library! In addition to the Kindles mentioned above, we now are proudly sporting a Nook Simple Touch e-reader. So what’s so new about that? Our Nook has young people in mind. This Nook is pre-loaded with the 2013 nominees for the Isinglass and Flume lists. The Isinglass books are nominated by middle school students, while the Flume titles are nominated by high school students. This means the Nook is slated for tweens and teens even though adults may be interested in teen fiction. We are asking that someone the age of 18 or older be the one who actually checks the Nook out because of the replacement cost value. Please consider checking out the Nook for your tween or teen reader. It may also be a way to get your reluctant reader started into the world of ebooks. You may place a hold on the Nook over the phone or from your computer. Take a look at the list below of what’s currently on the Kimball Simple Touch Nook.

Isinglass 2012-2013 Nominees: ‘Brain Jack’-Brian Falkner, ‘Bystander’-James Preller, ‘The Dead’-Charles Higson , ‘Divergent’-Veronica Roth , ‘Flip’-Martyn Bedford, ‘Guantanamo Boy’-Anna Perera, ‘Legend’-Marie Lu, ‘Long, Long Sleep’-Anna Sheehan, ‘A Monster Calls’-Patrick Ness, ‘Okay for Now’-Gary Schmidt, ‘Orchards’-Holly Thompson, ‘Reasons to be Happy’-Katrina Kittle, ‘Sean Griswold's Head’-Lindsey Leavitt, ‘Soccerland’-Beth Choat, ‘Stoneheart’-Charlie Fletcher, ‘Stuck on Earth’-David Klass, ‘This Dark Endeavor’-Kenneth Oppel, ‘Trash’-Andy Mulligan, ‘What You Wish For: Stories & Poems for Darfur Short Story Collection’, and ‘Wolves, Boys, and Other Things that Might Kill Me’-Chandler

Flume 2012-2013 Nominees: ‘Almost Perfect’-Brian Katcher, ‘Berlin Boxing Club’-Robert Sharenow, ‘Between Shades of Gray’-Ruta Sepetys, ‘Carter Finally gets It’-Brent Crawford, ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’-Laini Taylor, ‘Divergent’-Veronica Roth, ‘How to Save a Life’-Sara Zarr, ‘Lockdown’-Walter Dean Myers, ‘Lola and the Boy next Door’-Stephanie Perkins, ‘Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children’-Ransom Riggs, ‘The Name of the Star’-Maureen Johnson, ‘Scorpio Races’-Maggie Stiefvater, and ‘Where She Went’-Gayle Forman

We have an outstanding calendar of events planned for summer reading, and we don’t want you to miss out. Please be reminded that summer reading registration starts June 14th for all youth, and we have on average 5 events per week that must be registered for individually. Take a look in advance on the electronic calendar so you can plan now. This calendar may be found by accessing our website www.kimballlibrary.com, look for ‘Library Links’ and click on ‘Calendar’. Registration for these events is possible when the hand icon is showing. Click on the event itself for details.

Step up your appetite for summer reading as we kick-off with some amazing events! Not only is Peter Boie, 'Magician for Non-Believers' coming to present an exciting magic show the night of Tuesday, June 19th, at 6:30pm to kick-off the summer reading program, but he also is offering an hour long workshop to let youth in on some of his magical secrets. Peter's Magic Studio is a registration only event for Atkinson residents ages 9-19 versus the 6:30pm show which is open to the public.
Peter (oh boy!) teaches simple magic tricks to help increase confidence and improve communication skills in this hour long hands-on workshop...plus, it’s just fun to fool your friends and family with your newfound magical knowledge. This amazing workshop takes place from 5-6pm, and I don't have to be a magician or a psychic to know that it will fill up quickly. Hop onto the website or skip into the library to register (registration starts on June 4th for this particular event) and your child ages 9 and up will jump for joy at the chance to get into the in-crowd of magicians and legitimately say ‘Abracadabra!’.

Not only are we kicking off the summer with magic, but we are kicking off the summer with music! Tune in on Thursday, June 21st, in the courtyard for the Taylor River Band from 6:30-8pm. You’ll be tapping your toes for sure! The Taylor River Band is a contemporary Bluegrass Band with Heather Mike on Fiddle, Dave Dupouy on Banjo, Ben Molin on Bass, and Doug Molin on Guitar. TRB plays at venues throughout the area. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show! Popcorn will be served throughout the performance.

The above programs are sponsored by the very generous and hardworking ‘Friends of the Kimball Library’. Considering joining them and being part of making things happen! The next meeting is Wednesday, June 20th, at 10:15am. Come and see how you can be part of making your local library great!

Have you marked the date? Tie a string on your finger, make a note in your Palm Pilot, or set the alarm on your iPhone--- Registration for summer reading starts on Thursday, June 14th, and will remain open for one month. There are three distinct programs. Preschool (ages 3-5), Elementary (children entering grade K-5), and T/weens (youth entering grade 6 – age 19) and all may register starting on that date. Statistics show that children who read over the summer and engage their minds don’t lose as much brain power returning in the fall to school. Help your children stay alert! Make the library part of their summer vacation.

For more information or a list of upcoming programs, please visit our website www.kimballlibrary.com, call (603) 362-5234, or email us at staff@kimballlibrary.com. Also, you can get news directly sent to your inbox twice a month. Please ask us if you are interested. This is an efficient way to stay abreast of the newest events.

Kimball Library News 5/15/12

Back by popular demand, Mac McHale and Emery Hutchins are once again delighting audiences young and old with a combination of Irish music and American country music.  With banjo, guitar, mandolin, concertina, bodran, octave mandolin and heartwarming vocal harmonies, ‘Two Old Friends’ tell a story in music of how immigrants came to this country from Ireland, Scotland and Great Britain, bringing their melodies and instruments; they show how the old time country ballads of the Appalachians are rooted in these tunes.

A ‘Two Old Friends’ performance will give you plaintive ballads and foot stomping shout tunes; soaring mandolin solos, gospel sing-a-longs, traditional Irish tunes and storytelling.  There is truly something for everyone.

Come join the lads for one of their concerts and enjoy an evening with ‘Two Old Friends’ on Thursday, May 25th, at 6:30pm!  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library and is free of charge and open to the public.

Registration for all summer reading programs (preschool), (elementary), and (t/weens—middle/high school) begins on June 14th.  Each year there is a bit of confusion regarding this process so we proactively start to explain the semantics now.  The summer reading program as a whole must be registered for.  We also have individual events for each age group.  The individual events have a maximum capacity and often need food or craft supplies purchased in advance.  We take care not to over-purchase for our events. Please take note to not only register for the program as a whole, but also to register for each individual event you plan to attend.  We truly appreciate cancellations being called in because some other child may be told we are full for an event and that spot is reality is being taken by someone not actually attending.  More information regarding all the programs will be forthcoming, but definitely note that you may begin general registration on June 14th.  Registration for the program as a whole is ongoing until July 12th.

Stay tuned……. Peter Boie is coming to town!  Peter Boie, the self-proclaimed ‘Magician for Non-Believers’, will be performing at 6:30pm on Tuesday, June 19th, to kick-off the summer reading program. Peter travels the country performing for colleges, libraries, and for private and corporate events. While he performs for a wide variety of audiences and venues, he has a special place in his heart for libraries because he borrowed his first magic book from his local library when he was 11 years old. One of the things that has given Peter his success is his appeal to all age groups. From a five year old getting into the show and doing magic, to the hard to please teenager, to the parents and grandparents that visit the library, and everyone in between there’s something for everyone. Once the show starts Peter doesn’t let you go for a solid 45 minutes. The show runs the gamut from audience members getting into the show and doing magic themselves, to award-winning mind-blowing magic, to side-splitting comedy. Mark the date!  This event does not require registration but it is intended for Kimball Library summer reading participants and their families.

Kimball Library News 5/1/12

“Create and Express” is offering another two week selection of classes before the summer approaches. Join us in getting ready for those beautiful spring and summer gardens. We will be painting wooden garden signs. This is a two week class being offered for children in grade two and older. These classes are being held on Thursdays, May 10 and 17, from 4-5pm. Registration is required along with a two week commitment.

Friday Freewheelers is prepared to offer one more session before summer approaches also. This is a way for the kids to wind down before bed with some stories and a simple activity. This session starts on Friday, May 11th and will run until June 8th. Stories are generally geared for children in the 4-8 range, but all ages are welcome. Miss Betsy will always have a smile for you and possibly a snack on some occasions. Registration is not necessary. Just drop in from 6:30-7:00pm and enjoys stories with a smile.

Try our book discussion in May that meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6-7pm. This month readers are gathering to discuss “The Redbreast” by Jo Nesbo on May 15th. Any adult interested is welcome to attend. Registration is not required. We have copies of the book at the main desk, and please don’t be deterred if you didn’t read the book. Just stop in to listen and get acquainted.

Kimball Library accepts book donations year round, but twice a year we urge you to especially clear out those you no longer want and bring them in to us. The Town-wide Yard Sale (May 19) is coming up and we’d like to have a large selection for folks to peruse and purchase. These items take some time to be sorted through which is why we are asking for them now. We accept books, music, and DVDs in good condition. Please be sure books are not moldy or damaged and that music and movies are playable the entire way through. We do not accept any magazines, text books, encyclopedias, or Reader’s Digest condensed books. When we receive your donation, we first sort through to see if we’d like to add any of the items to our collection. If we don’t add the item(s) to our collection, we then decide if it is to be sold or to be transferred to a non-profit organization. Please take care to recycle your unwanted items by helping the environment and your local library. Donations can be received during open hours from Monday-Friday (10-8) and Saturday (10-3). If you have large amounts of materials, please call ahead so we can be sure to assist you.

As mentioned above, mark your calendar for Saturday, May 19th. We will have lots of great adult and children’s books for sale. Most adult books are $2.00 or less and children’s books are under $1.00. DVDs, VHS videos and music are $2.00 or less. Audio books will be priced individually. There will be some “Special/Collector Books” for sale, and each book from that list will be priced individually.

There will be a great selection of home baked goods and yard sale items. Come early for the best selection as items do tend to go quickly. This event is sponsored by The Friends of the Kimball Library which supports many wonderful programs such as “Summer Reading” which is right around the corner.

Kimball Library News 4/24/12

If you have a teenager in your life that you’d like to encourage to try our monthly book discussion then May is the month. Teens will gather at 6:30 on Wednesday, May 9th, to discuss a graphic novel entitled ‘Rapunzel’s Revenge’. This book is a fast read and should appeal to even the most reluctant of readers. Even if graphic novels aren’t their thing, most likely the discussion that is off-topic and the candy that is available will appeal to them. Please give us a try.

When Lady Hawke, the reader dog, was out for physical therapy we had lots of people calling to see when she’d be back. Hawke only comes for children, so you must register if you want to spend time with her. Hawke visits us on the third Wednesday of each month. This month that happens to be on May 16th. She loves to hear the children read to her. She is patient and loving and never corrects mistakes. Hawke is a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International and is very accommodating with children of all ages. Hawke lives in Plaistow with her brother and sister labs. Register to read to her and visit between 4 and 5pm on the 16th. You might get a big lick thanking you by the loveable Lab. ;)

The ever-popular Felicia Motherway is back on Tuesday, May 15th, from 6:30-8:00pm. Learn some basic horticulture by planting a delightful, fragrant planter of herbs! Plant your favorite culinary herbs in a 20 inch terracotta window box planter perfect outside your kitchen door, deck or patio. Please note that registration is required and a $25.00 material fee must be paid when registering. Felicia will have extra inexpensive herbs for sale that evening so make sure you save the date. Invite a friend or two and join the fun getting your hands dirty and enjoy an evening out!

Here is a gentle reminder to register for the *new* upcoming classes ‘Music & Me’. Children from three to five years old and their caregivers are welcome to join us for some early music-development activities at ‘Music and Me’! Our time will be spent in circle-dancing, call-and-response songs, rhythmic stories, and percussion activities. Our focus will be music, but our activities will also teach socialization and early literacy skills. Come join the fun starting on Monday, May 7th! These classes are from 11:30 to noon on Mondays. *This is a 5 week program to run: 5/7/12 - 6/11/12. Registration is required.
