Kimball Library News 9/25/12

*NEW* on our webpage are some databases that you may not have tried yet. There are four distinct reference options to choose from: Gale Virtual Reference Library, Chilton Library, Legal Forms, and Price It! Antiques and Collectibles. You will need your 14 digit library card number to access them. The GVR Library has the following subjects available: Biography, Business, Education, Environment, General Reference, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, Multicultural Studies, Nation and World, Religion, Science, and Social Science. Try exploring and searching at your leisure.

Chilton Library has ‘Automotive Repair Information for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) People’. Chilton Library provides exclusive photographs, diagnostics designed by instructors, step-by-step repair procedures, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams, recalls and Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for automobiles and light trucks in one easy-to-use web site. Since Kimball Library subscribes to Chilton Library, you are now equipped with decades of data to maintain your vehicle. You can choose by vehicle and subject.

Legal Forms has a general search engine, but it also has radio buttons of the most popular searchers that include divorce, bankruptcy, power of attorney, wills & estates, landlord tenant, name change, real estate, sample letters, and incorporation. Sometimes your legal needs are right at the end of your library card and fingertips!

Price It! Antiques & Collectibles is a database for novice and professional collectors. It is a comprehensive antique and collectible pricing tool, which delivers 23 million realized prices on treasures nearly 30% of Americans collect, buy and trade every day.

Not as new, but you may have missed, is a treasure less than 6 months old to us called “Transparent Languages”. Improve your foreign language skills with this language database service. Over 80 languages are available with step by step online tutorials for learning a new language. Once you are registered you can access Transparent Language through your home computer via the Internet, or a mobile device.

Take note that we have many informative features on our website and it is worth looking at daily so you can get in on the latest events—many of which require registration. Kimball Library News 9/18/12

Create & Express (crafts for youth) are back and there are several openings in the upcoming weeks. On Thursdays from 4-5pm we are offering classes on September 27th and October 11th that still have availability. Registration is required for all ‘Create & Express’ events.

On September 27th, we have a ‘Leaf Rubbing Class’. Let’s enjoy the season! Collect leaves from different types of trees. You can collect some and bring them in for class, and Miss Judy will have some here. You will use crayons and paper and create beautiful leaf rubbings. This is open for children in grades K-5.

On October 11th, we will be having “Tissue Paper Collage’ class. We will be creating a tissue paper collage in a mosaic fashion. We will add a tree trunk on top of our mosaic design to make a fall scene. This will be fun for grades K-5.

We took some time off in the summer on Friday nights due to summer reading events galore, but now we are back up and running. Come spend some time with Miss Betsy on Friday nights at 7pm for PJ Peeps! PJ peeps are welcome to come in pajamas and listen to several stories and get a goodnight snack. This is a story time for families and their young children capable of listening to three books. We are serving multiple stories and a single snack. Please check our preschool classes if you are looking for an included craft and longer session. This is a drop-in event. Friends are welcome. Stories are geared for ages 4-8. Parents are welcome in pjs also. ;)

Do you know how to ‘turn it on’ and then you are stumped? We have ‘Turn it On! (Tech tutorials) available by appointment only. If you have an e-reader or gadget that makes you want to hide, then we have just what you're looking for. You can have a brief lesson here on your tech toy (Kindle, iPad, iPod, Nook or other device compatible with Overdrive) to learn how to put an e-book on it. This is a basic tutorial for newbies and they are for 30 minutes for one person (or two if you are couple). Appointments may also be made for tutorials for the new catalog or some very simple computer instruction. (Renewals, holds, searching, setting up an email account, facebook, etc.) Got questions? Ask for Kathy Watson at (603) 362-5234. (Kimball Library card holders in good standing only, please.)

For those who plan ahead, The Kimball Library will be closed on Monday, October 8. (Two day loans checked out on either Friday the 5th or Saturday the 6th will not be due until Tuesday, October 9th.)

For more information or a list of upcoming programs, please visit our website www.kimballlibrary.com, call (603) 362-5234, or email us at staff@kimballlibrary.com. Kimball Library News 9/11/12

Feeling hungry? Be prepared to be educated, delighted, and fed on Monday, October 22th, from 6:30-8pm. Liz Barbour will be back at the Kimball Library sharing her “New Traditions for Thanksgiving” cooking demonstration. Samples of food will be served and recipes will be shared.

Liz's cooking demonstrations help demystify the cooking process by focusing on cooking instructions, knife skills and the healthy benefits of cooking at home while using fresh, local, whole food ingredients. Her cooking demonstrations and recipes have been featured on New Hampshire Chronicle. Liz appears regularly on WMUR Channel's 9 ‘Cooking Corner’, and her recipes are featured in various publications including New Hampshire Magazine. “New Traditions for Thanksgiving” includes a slide presentation of Liz’s adventures at a turkey slaughter (no gore included!)

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Kimball Library. Registration is required. Space is limited.

Feeling generous toward those who are really hungry? Rockingham Community Action (www.rcaction.org) is an organization out of Salem that serves the Atkinson/Greater Salem area. They are a full service agency for people in the Greater Salem area, as well as Greater Raymond so people of Atkinson are able to reach out to them for food, fuel assistance, homelessness issues, electrical assistance, just to name a few. We currently have a box in our lobby for you to place non-perishable items to help those in need. Please donate all items by Friday, October 19th. If you are wondering what types of food are needed, primarily canned goods work best. Suggestions would include vegetables, fruit, rice, potatoes, stews, peanut butter, jelly, tuna, mayo, and pasta. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

There’s still time to register for the following: Mother Goose on the Loose, Bitty Books, Kiddie Lit, and Create & Express. These are children’s programs that may almost be full, but we encourage you to get on the waiting list. This helps us to know if we should add a second class of anything, so don’t hesitate to register. Some of our little ones have moved to older classes so we can accommodate more children. We think that having too many registrations is a good problem to have, and we are excited that so many children are interested. None of the preschool classes prohibit starting mid-session so don’t think you’re too late. If you have specific questions regarding the available classes, please ask for Kathy Watson or anyone in the Children’s Room.

One quick reminder for you -- the ‘Book & Bake Sale’ is on Saturday, September 29th, from 8am-3pm. We are still accepting donations until September 28th. Keep ‘em coming!
